LaQuon Treadwell and our WR recruiting

  • BooBahBuckeye said...

Gallon is a great receiver: great hands, super after the catch. IMHO he will play on Sundays in the NFL.

I think he'll definitely find a niche as a slot receiver somewhere, and his draft stock should greatly improve this year with Devin Gardner throwing to him.

They have one elite WR and three very good ones. Plus some studs from the last two classes not named Cooper: Shinn, White, Black, and Jones.

What have any of those other guys done to qualify as "very good" or "studs" since they've stepped foot on Bama's campus?

They were a 1 man show at WR this year. Cooper had twice as many catches as the next guy.

I think Michigan's WR recruiting will improve significantly once Morris takes over and proves himself as a great pass-first QB (which I personally believe he will). Most big-time WRs don't want to play with spread QBs, that's the honest truth. Manziel is one of the few, but he's already won a Heisman and has proven that he's an effective thrower, and often pass-first run-second. Teddy Bridgewater is very similar. OSU is facing that same problem, and most OSU fans don't want to face the fact that most elite WRs don't really care to play with a QB like Braxton Miller who is more of a runner than a thrower. UM faced that with DRob, Gardner is kind of breaking that mold, but I see Morris as the one that changes the perception of the style of offense UM plays. Just my 2 cents.

Not true, the spread offense which typically in college uses a dual threat QB, is designed to get the ball to playmakers in space. If you are a playmaker the spread is the perfect offense for you, Braxton Miller being inconsistent doesn't help, Philly had something like 60 catches this year as our top receiver, which I think puts him in top 3 for the conference, problem is OSU doesn't have many playmakers at WR right now.

Spread is also alot of short, drop passes .... elite WRs IMHO look for the system that provides them enough touches per game .... mixed between short, drop passes & deep routes. You want to be able to showcase your talents and speed from both perspectives. B. Miller is a Denard-esque QB, but a better thrower. I do not see OSU getting the elite WRs, similar to UM's problems with DR.

Yes, Marshall is very good. But, 1 WR does not make a normal. Also, he is in OH's backyard - a given for you. Let me know when elite WRs are enrolling from outside OH.

  • I think we have a good shot at Drake Harris from MI next year.

Also we are in good shape with
    Mark Andrews
    Trevion Thompson
    Shaq Davidson
    Josh Malone

    and really good shape with
    Thaddeus Snobgrass
    Demarre Kitt

Those are all top 150 national type guys.

I'm more worried about OSUs ability to sign Olineman especially next year. If we dont get 3-4 really good ones next year we are going to have some major issues.

His season is really impressive once you start to look at the context of his performance.

    Michigan's passing offense:

    Attempts: 319, 109th
    Completions: 169, 112th
    Completion Percentage: 53, 109th

If Michigan can even have mediocre season through the air then his production should improve dramatically. It's actually staggering how terrible we were through the air.

Another interesting, but less important fact, Gallon's numbers actually got better when he played against ranked opponents.

    Vs ranked opponents
    6g, 5.2 rec/g, 75yards/g

    Vs unranked opponents
    7g, 2.6 rec/g, 54yards/g

Rumored from Kurelic and Helwagen. Every player they report on has that rumor. Rumor is we are in better shape then you. Have you heard anything about his teammate Mason Cole? I know you guys are allergic to OL. They both have strong interest in UM, and could/would like to play together.

Is this tbb now? Why can't you guys seem to keep your posts and comments on your own page or the public page?

I don't know if it has been mentioned, but if you take Gallon's numbers from the 5 games that Gardner started they project to 80 catches and 1300 yards according to Mgoblog.

Marshall is a great athlete, but a great WR he is not.

I think he'll have an impact returning, and running the ball early on, but he has a long way to go as far as his receiving skills.

So says the idiot who says you don't need elite play makers... HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

If we want to be like Alabama, then we do. If we want to win Big Ten championships, we have to build a run game, an OL, and an elite defense.

I want small steps. First we build the foundation. Then we hopefully get elite WRs.

Elite play makers are important, but there are ways around it. Has Stanford had any elite play makers. No, they play D, recruit great oline, run the ball, and create mismatches with their TE packages. I see a lot of similarities between Stanford and Michigan. That being said Michigan will be able to get elite playmakers once we are fully a pro style offense.

  • I firmly believe that at this time Michigan does not have a great "current" record with WRs. If the coaching staff can develop a couple of these guys into NFL caliber players then you will see the doors open. Yet I still wonder at times if it is someone on the staff that just doesn't "click" with the kids??????? UofM should be reeling in 4 and 5 star WRs with no trouble. We do not seem to have problems with any other position.

    D. Harris is not going to OSU. And ... D. Webb will not stick with you by next NSD. Mark it.

They were a 1 man show at WR this year. Cooper had twice as many catches as the next guy.

First, note that Amari Cooper is an extremely rare talent, and that the rest of the guys largely had limited catches because of the sheer number of viable targets the Alabama offense has.

Norwood, Bell, and Jones are all good receivers. Plus they are all returning along with Cooper. Plus Cyrus Jones and Chris Black are extremely highly touted RS freshman, and Marvin Shinn was a top 10 receiver in the class of 2010.

If you were to rank Alabama and Michigan's receivers based on talent, Gallon would probably be fourth or fifth and the only one in the top 7.

But if you think about it what WR would want to try to catch Drob passes the last couple of years? Not many recruits knew that DGardner was going to become QB halfway through the season.

West Virginia had and has elite skill players, actually...how do you like them apples?

The roadmap to building a good team is now clear. Lineman first, run game next, basics, and then everything else afterwards.
