I'm not a big fan of the "stop talking to him" approach, because the recruits get extremely frustrated when they can't get in touch with the school and they don't know what's going on. But from what I've gathered, every school does it to a certain extent. I think it's a way of not totally burning that bridge by telling the kid where he actually stands, so if some of the top targets fall through, you can still go back and possibly smooth things over.
