Jayru Campbell, 6'1 FRESHMAN, starting Detroit Cass Tech High QB

  • I know this is kind of early, but this kid really caught my eye a couple weeks ago during their playoff game against Livonia Churchill. Jayru is 14 years old, is 6'1 and the starting QB for Detroit Cass Tech's VARSTY football team and is leading them into Regionals this Friday against Shane Morris and De La Salle. Might wanna keep an eye on his development because he is at Michigan's pipeline school.

That's really impressive poise for a freshman quarterback.

I saw him come into the Harrison game in the second half and he played well. Made a few nice plays. Wasn't scared at all. Coach Wilcher at Cass Tech says he'll be big time. I saw him practice later in the season, and he definitely has ability. Penn State has already started sending mail.

Cass Tech is really gonna have some good ones coming out the next few years. 2013 DB Jourdan Lewis is one I can think of now. I see these kids play almost every week so I know what they're capable of. It's key that Michigan keeps getting them to cement this pipeline even more. As for Jayru, he has a lot of time to grow and improve even more. And hopefully Coach Wilcher can influence him to go blue when the time comes.

Off topic but I would never let my son go to that school after what recently just came out. I don't know how any parent would be comfortable. Yes, it was over a decade ago but it still happened and those who knew didn't report it. That school's athletic program is tarnished forever in my opinion.

Sean Charette started for Lake Orion in the State Championship game his freshman year, and he isn't being recruited by anybody.

    Neat?

    Also irrelevant

  • You said noone is recruiting him. Steve just said Penn st is in contact, therefore being recruited. So nothing alike. Nothing alike=irrelevant.

How is that irrelevant? You are talking about a freshman starting quarterback for a solid football team in high school, and I was telling you of a similar situation, but the kid didn't turn out to be some superstar...

That Charette kid is also 5'10.

Jayru is 6'1 and 14 years old, already getting attention and starting to be recruited. Not exactly the same situation if the kid you're talking about is JUST a starting freshman. Jayru also goes to Cass Tech, a pipeline school to Michigan.

  • So is Jayru 6'1"?

I remember reading in other places that he's 6'3". Of course, we all know that measurables are frequently inflated.

I've met the kid before, he seems to be 6'1. I'm just basing this on me being 5'11 and him being a little taller than me.

Can obviously never tell this early in a kid's career, but Chance Stewart started as a frosh and is on the path of being a big time national prospect. Jayru is likely going to still grow a little, so if he ends up a 4-year starter at 6'3"+ he will be a big time prospect.

It's always exciting to see someone young starting to big things already and get attention; especially when they go to your pipeline school. I'm excited to see the development of this kid in the next couple of years.

I'll have more on him and 2013 DB Jourdan Lewis friday night after their game. Big game for Cass Tech in the regional final at De La Salle and Shane Morris.

It's been hinted that Jourdan Lewis would follow in the footsteps of the other Cass kids and maybe even be an early commit if he got an offer. That's why I was asking Steve in the thread about Wiggins who may get offered since we have taken a ton of DBs recently. I don't see the staff skipping an offer for Jourdan if he's D1 caliber coming out of Cass, so will be interesting to watch.

Jourdan currently holds one offer from toldeo. A little undersized at 5'10, but the kid can play. If Michigan can land Jourdan Lewis (high possiblity if they offer) it will REALLY cement the pipeline with Cass Tech. Also helps when the coach of Cass Tech is former Michigan RB Thomas Wilcher, that probably plays a big factor in his kids decisions.

It's great having a former player as a HSFB coach. It's kind of like the pipeline ohio has with cleveland glenville. That school has been just pumping out players to ohio like crazy. That's because Tedd Ginn Sr is their coach. Although, Hoke created a crack in their pipeline last year by getting Frank Clark.

Getting a kid OSU didn't offer doesn't put a crack in the pipeline anymore than Iowa landing Ruben Lile and Laron Taylor puts a crack in our Cass Tech pipeline. It doesn't affect things at all.

It wasn't a crack in that sense, but when a Glenville kid goes to Michigan, and excels (I think Clark will be pretty good in a couple years), Glenville kids will take notice of it.

  • Jayru outplayed Shane Morris tonight IMO. Jayru was ZIPPING the ball to his receivers on some throws. He has a very good arm, no doubt. It can only get better in his next 3 years of HS football.

He went 8/15 tonight and 0-0 in TD-INT. No fumbles.
