Jake Ryan out with ACL

  • IMHO...Gardner is the only guy on the team that we can't live without. He was the QB of the defense and best playmaker no doubt. But I think we'll see a lot of Hoke's recruits stepping up in a big way this year. I don't think the whole defense takes a step back as Mitch Again said....but there may be plays that don't get made that he woulda made. His blitzing, high motor, and intensity is what we'll miss the most. I happy for Cam Gordon tho...losing his spot after his freshman year and working so hard to get reps in games and on Sp. Teams and now its his time to shine. I think he's up to the task...he's bigger and more physical than he used to be. Jake will be missed, but as Mattison says...next man up. It's the Michigan way. Really sucks tho cause I just purchased an action picture of Jake to hang on my wall in the mancave. Go get em' Gordon....prove yourself.

They'd have to prove his original redshirt was medically related. Not sure if they'll be able to do that.

Yeah, I doubt they'll be able to - he wasn't redshirted due to injury or anything else.

Here's the one and only positive I can think of: Jake Ryan probably would have had an incredible year this year, and very well could have gone pro. I don't think anyone here would've blamed him if he had taken that leap. Now, we're guaranteed to have a RS SR Jake Ryan back in 2014 with something to prove. I've maintained for a while that 2014 sets up to be a very good year for us (with Gardner as a RS SR, an extra year of seasoning and development for a very young team, and a pretty easy schedule), so ensuring that one more big piece will be around is about the only silver lining I can see in this situation.

Pretty much like our CBs last year.

Still, it's just unbelievable - of all the players on the team, the one who has to get injured is the irreplaceable one. Just like last year. Fuck everything.

I think this is a little bit of an overreaction. Last year, the DL would have been hurt more if someone like Roh or QWash or Campbell went down. And Countess turned out to actually be kind of replaceable. Taylor stepped in, and while probably not quite as good, was still better than Floyd. Floyd was the problem, and we might never have even gotten to see Taylor last year if Countess' injury didn't give him the opportunity. As for Jake Ryan, yeah, it's definitely a blow. He lead the team in tackles, sacks, TFL, etc...but they've got plenty of time to figure something out and for somebody else to step up.

Agree. Gardner is probably the only, literally, irreplaceable cog on this team right now. Jake's loss hurts more than others, but even with the loss of Martin, RVB, Heiniger, and Countess from the '11 squad, the '12 squad was actually better. Let's see what the coaches and players can do before we as a fan base fall apart.

  • Can't discount Ryan's loss, but the hope should be that the defensive line will see enough improvements to offset part of Ryan's value last season in getting to the quarterback.

    Steve Lorenz

  • As I said in the other thread. I'm confident that Mattison will be able to piece things together by the time the season rolls around.

Looking back it would have been very nice to have one or both of our LB commits enroll early, to at least increase the chances that they can compete for snaps, but prior to this LB looked to be one of our strongest positional groups.

  • I'm not a fan of UM, but I truly hate these stories. Injuries are part of the game, but that doesn't make the injured feel better. Praying for a quick and FULL recovery.

We don't know our schedule for 2014 yet because of the new divisions, but we should have ND and OSU on the road which is not easy.

  • Clark, Beyer, Ojemudia, Wormely, and possibly Taco need to be able to get constant pressure from the front four.

  • Unfortunate. Hope Ryan has a swift recovery.

Also - This may be a dumb question, but could this hurt the Berger recruitment in any way?

I see your point but you never know how someone will recover from a injury especially one as serious as an ACL tear. He may never be the same, happens all the time.

I thought that the medical hardship waiver was unrelated to the regular redshirt (outside of the fact that people call it a medical redshirt for sake of ease).

I could be wrong, but none of the 4 requirements for the medical hardship mention not having used the redshirt at all. (I am mostly just being optimistic here)

    For reference:

To be eligible for a medical hardship waiver, a student-athlete has to meet the following criteria:

    1. The student-athlete must suffer the injury during one of their four seasons of college competition or during the senior year of high school.
    2. The injury must be incapacitating. That means it must be a season-ending injury.
    3. The injury must occur prior to the start of the second half of the season.
    4. The student-athlete must not have competed in more than 30% of the season or three contests, whichever is greater.

Definitely ways to get a 6th year of eligibility without being injured your red shirt freshmen year.

You have to prove that the first redshirt year was due to circumstances beyond the player's control though. Some commonly accepted reasons are injury to the player, health issues for a close family member, or financial problems, but you're not going to get a 6th year after an ordinary redshirt.

  • After breathing into my paper bag...

I think we will be ok. This hurts about as much as losing Countess last year hurt. A lot, but manageable. And it happened now, which means we should be ready.

Wish Jake the best in his recovery.

Right, and I'm saying they will find some sort of "circumstance" if Jake wants that 6th year badly enough.

  • I really hope that Cam steps up and has a great senior year. I think he will and that excites me. Like others have said before, he was the starter until he got hurt. It's his senior year and his time to shine!
