IMHO...Gardner is the only guy on the team that we can't live without. He was the QB of the defense and best playmaker no doubt. But I think we'll see a lot of Hoke's recruits stepping up in a big way this year. I don't think the whole defense takes a step back as Mitch Again said....but there may be plays that don't get made that he woulda made. His blitzing, high motor, and intensity is what we'll miss the most. I happy for Cam Gordon tho...losing his spot after his freshman year and working so hard to get reps in games and on Sp. Teams and now its his time to shine. I think he's up to the task...he's bigger and more physical than he used to be. Jake will be missed, but as Mattison says...next man up. It's the Michigan way. Really sucks tho cause I just purchased an action picture of Jake to hang on my wall in the mancave. Go get em' Gordon....prove yourself.

Yeah, I doubt they'll be able to - he wasn't redshirted due to injury or anything else.
Here's the one and only positive I can think of: Jake Ryan probably would have had an incredible year this year, and very well could have gone pro. I don't think anyone here would've blamed him if he had taken that leap. Now, we're guaranteed to have a RS SR Jake Ryan back in 2014 with something to prove. I've maintained for a while that 2014 sets up to be a very good year for us (with Gardner as a RS SR, an extra year of seasoning and development for a very young team, and a pretty easy schedule), so ensuring that one more big piece will be around is about the only silver lining I can see in this situation.

I thought that the medical hardship waiver was unrelated to the regular redshirt (outside of the fact that people call it a medical redshirt for sake of ease).
I could be wrong, but none of the 4 requirements for the medical hardship mention not having used the redshirt at all. (I am mostly just being optimistic here)
For reference:
To be eligible for a medical hardship waiver, a student-athlete has to meet the following criteria:
1. The student-athlete must suffer the injury during one of their four seasons of college competition or during the senior year of high school. 2. The injury must be incapacitating. That means it must be a season-ending injury. 3. The injury must occur prior to the start of the second half of the season. 4. The student-athlete must not have competed in more than 30% of the season or three contests, whichever is greater.

You have to prove that the first redshirt year was due to circumstances beyond the player's control though. Some commonly accepted reasons are injury to the player, health issues for a close family member, or financial problems, but you're not going to get a 6th year after an ordinary redshirt.
