Is it the brand or the man

  • This is my first post as a subscribing member of this board. I've been reading all the free info for over a year. A recent string of events caused me to buy a subscription (Steve Lorenz, Derrick Green). The question I have for you is this. Brady Hoke seems to be a tireless recruiter who is genuinely well liked and respected by the prospects, the parents and the coaches. The staff under his direction has never sleep mentality, always blazing the recruiting trail. But MICHIGAN is a brand that not even RR could damage. The opportunity to be a Michigan man is popular again. The block M once again shines bright (like the signal used to call batman) for the college football world to see. So the question I leave for all my new friends is Man or Brand?

  • welcome

I think it takes a man like Brady Hoke to bring out what Michigan is all about. Lots of tradition but you need the right fit and the right type of mindset, which this staff seems to have.

The man brought back the image. Richrod was destroying the Michigan name.

  • Its really hard to destroy a brand like michigan. Even in todays new age of competition, most storied programs shine bright even after some down years. On the other hand, Hoke is such a tireless worker. I have so much respect for what he represents and how he goes about his business. The man genuinely care and people see that. The combination kf tbe two should eventually put us back on top.

  • I think it's a delicate balance of having someone who knows how to use the brand to its fullest extent. I think Hoke gets it and that's why he's been so successful without having had tangible success before coming to Michigan.

I think he was very succesful before coming ro michigan. Coach of the year in two different conferences is a pretty amazing feat, no matter what level of football. The overall records can be kind of thrown out since he was brought in to rebuild both times

Tangible; he was a .500-ish coach. To outsiders or those that didn't take more than ten seconds to look at what he had actually done, he was not "successful". I think what he did at his first few stops was incredible, especially Ball State. To a 17 year-old kid, they didn't know his name or what he had done.

He couldn't walk in and sell himself as a big winner like some can. To me, it makes his ability to recruit early on even more impressive. When Michigan does start winning at a higher level, the combination of him as a coach and Michigan as a program, along with his ability to sell the program as a whole should keep the program at a top level for years.

Agreed with everything. I just dont believe you can define success by simple wins and losses when you are asked to build something at programs that have never had anythimg before. He wasnt rebuilding, he was building from tje ground up.
And we are not outsiders, we are the michigan 247 board. The question was polled to us, so im not sure we care what outsiders think.
But no doubt, it is incredible what he has managed to accomplish. If the trend continues, there is no limit

  • I always believed that the program sold itself, what kid wouldn't want to play at one of the most storied programs in college football. Reading all the stories about his relationships with the prospects and their parents and coaches makes me believe that he's a better recruiter than we realize.

I don't define success by wins and losses; recruits do. That's what I'm referring to.

  • Look at it this way: the Michigan brand had not yet lost its luster, but its support structure had been totally destroyed.

Brady Hoke was able to come in and provide a cohesive, hard-working and competent staff on day one and immediately change the attitude and atmosphere of the program.

The Michigan brand is going to outlast Brady Hoke, but for us - right now - its the man.

Then please explain USC or Ole Miss. Lane hasnt won anywhere he has coached and Ole Miss hasnt been relevant in years, but yet they are both having a very good year recruiting.

USC is an example of a brand surviving. Note: the kids who are sticking with USC are the Cali kids and the ones who have non-football motives for wanting to be in LA (like LMIII). So many of the other kids are jumping ship because Lane can't keep them. USC had the potential for one of the best classes ever, but it fell apart.

Ole Miss, on the other hand, is just an example of a lot of things coming together at the right time. Nkemdiche's brother plays there, Standifer got in there after he didn't qualify here, and Mississippi produced some amazing homegrown talent this year (like Antonio Conner and Chris Jones). I will bet you any amount of money that Ole Miss' class next year doesn't even sniff the top 10. This is one of those once-in-a-decade classes that comes together through no particular extra effort on the part of the coaches.

Well recruiting heats up and can create a perception illusion. An illusion that the program is in a better spot then it is. Its not telling yet whether that will carry over next year for ole miss. I think it very well can, but they need to produce on the field again. An 8 win season can propel them forward next year again i believe

I think its both, the Michigan name alone is good for at least a top 25 class but as we saw under RR it doesn't guarantee a top 5 class. It gives Hoke a lot to sell with the Big House, winged helmets, great academics and long rich tradition but as you mentioned Hoke also resonates with these kids and their parents. He genuinely cares about these kids and they can tell. So I feel like we'll always recruit well but not everyone can consistently bring us in top 5 classes.

Welcome brother. IMO, it is a great combination of both, a combination that we have not seen since Bo. No disrespect to Lloyd, but Hoke just has "it".

I just got my subscription to bc of Steve and I thought not better time to do it with green coming to the fold. I think the way hoke won over the fan base and every one around the program was huge. Then he followed it up with a 11-2 season so u can't ask for a better start to the new era.
