Well, I'm sure you know what I'm trying to do better than I do.

BTW, contractions utilize an apostrophe, not a quotation mark.

Yeah being a grammer nazi is always a great way to prove a point.

That is what we mean by "Walverine." Also those who degrade our academics but did not go to Michigan.

This is what I know for a fact downriver. My cousin went to MSU and got his degree in liberal arts with a B/C average in High School. I don't believe it's possible to attend UM AA with a B/C average. Judging by the comments on the Red Cedar board I'd say most downriver people have more in common with MSU fans than UM fans. I just moved back here from West Chester, Ohio and MSU fans are very similar to OSU fans in terms of overall rudeness and flat out hatred. I moved into a beautiful house here two months back and the place was an absolute mess. The lady at Lowe's told me welcome to Downriver, lol. On day two we were behind some big UAW member pick up truck with a pair of silver balls hanging from the trailer hitch. My wife asked what the hell was that and where have you taken me to? I explained, hillbilly heaven. How you know you are back Downriver is when you are out golfing on a golf course along a road and people are screaming things at you out the window of their car as they ride by. No other place I've ever lived is like this, lol.

Right. If you really attended a 'popular' school in northern Florida why wouldn't you simply name it? Ashamed? Posting undercover? Don't remember the name? lol

Seriously? Is it that difficult to put two and two together and figure out that it's UF? headslap

The reason I didn't mention it is precisely my point. Even if I didn't go to any school, I would still think that the behaviors exhibited by some MSU fans and alumni is pathetic. ..And there you go proving my point and questioning where I went. lol

Walverine describes behavior more than anything else. It is the fan that insults MSU's education, but have no/lesser college degree. They say Michigan will win because "Their Michigan". They think WalMart Wolverine is childish and immature, but "Ohio" is the greatest thing ever. Every fanbase has asssholes, but Michigan has a ton of them and we have a name for them.

You see, I don't think it's wrong for an MSU fan to use that moniker for U of M fans that start ragging on their education, but you know it's gotten out of control when it includes students from said school!

I've seen similar behavior from FSU people and I have to say it's interesting to observe in other rivalries as well.

Hard to argue. Some people are just idiots. There is defintley the MSU "fan" who cares more about Michigan than they do State.

  • If you did not graduate from the University of Michigan, why do you pull for the wolverines? If you didn't go to college at all, that's fine. If you went somewhere like Ferris, SVSU, or Wayne State, that's fine too. But why pull for UofM?

About half of UMAA alumni are from somewhere other than Michigan - typically from an East Coast or New York City socio-economic elitist family. UMAA is extremely proud of the fact that they don't serve the people of Michigan. These are people who hate you. They can't stand to be in the same room as you. You’re not invited to their cocktail parties. If you were, they’d have you parking cars. These are people who treat you like a fill-in janitor. When you leave the room, they gossip and make jokes about you. Why are you so ravenously loyal to something that doesn’t respect you as a person?

Michigan State has done more for the people of Michigan, more for the State of Michigan, and more for institutions like the Military and probably shares your values more. Again - why do you support something that fundamentally disrespects you? Are you a doormat in all other areas of your life as well?

I'm not trying to be a dick and insult your education here, but I believe you meant to say "They're Michigan." Their = possessive, they're = "they are."

I'm not trying to be a dick, but the misspelling was intentional. Unfortunately, context doesn't translate well to the electronic document format.

  • As a Spartan with two degrees from MSU, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (1 major) and Chemistry I would argue that if you look at the "real" degrees from both schools I find very little difference in the quality of education. If you take an MSU grad vs a UM grad in science or engineering they're both going to be just as prepared for a job.

There are just as many students that slack off and party 24/7 at both schools. The difference in department rankings between the schools has much less to do with quality of education than it does with $$$ spent on research. UM has a higher endowment than MSU and therefore has more research. Many programs at both universities are very close to each other in rankings, if you even believe those mean anything.

Average entering GPAs at both schools also mean very little to me. I was a high school senior with a 3.2 from the middle of nowhere in SW Michigan. The high school had one AP class. Got into both schools. Seriously considered UM, but I knew MSU's campus better and already liked the area. Plus, being from a small town I wanted to go to the bigger school. I graduated with two ridiculously hard majors in 4 years with a 3.8 GPA. Plus did research in the lab while in school and got published.

My point here is that while UM may have some (not all) higher ranked programs, the difference in rankings is not significant. Most people in the "real world" look at a degree from both schools equivalently. Therefore, knocking someone because they went to MSU instead of UM is moronic.

In answer to your first string of questions, maybe family members went to U of M? Maybe someone grew up in close proximity to AA? Maybe it's because Michigan has historically been the best college football team in the state, by far? Maybe because when many of us were growing up, Michigan won the '97 National Championship? There are a million and a half reasons to root for the Wolverines, regardless of whether or not you attended U of M.

As for your second paragraph of massive over-generalizations, stop projecting your own insecurities. There are few things that unite a common group like athletics - regardless of socioeconomic status, we can all throw back a few and root for a shared interest. Again, assuming that a massive portion of Michigan alums look down their nose at everyone else is idiotic and self-serving. While there's a dose of elitism on the UM side, there's just as much of an unjustified inferiority complex on the MSU side.

Finally, I'd love some explanation for your last paragraph. How has MSU done more for the people/state of Michigan? How has it done more for the military? How do you have any idea what people's values are? Hell, if I'm an admirer of couches, I daresay MSU would be the last place I'd pledge my loyalty. By projecting your own insecurities regarding perceived disrespect and weakness, you're just coming off as a bitter and angry person with a chip on their shoulder and nothing to back up a whole lot of bluster.

Nice try, but I think OP's response made it pretty clear that wasn't an intentional misspelling.

However, you're more than welcome to try to elaborate on why OP intentionally misspelled something my 8-year-old cousin wouldn't screw up.

  • Regarding it as a rivalry, I don't dislike people just because of the school they went to either.

Sure, I love to watch UM fail at sports, but do I hate everyone who goes there? No.

If someone starts acting like an asshole, berating my education, then being pissed is justified. Especially when they didn't even go to UM.

Speaking as someone in the legal community and as someone with an intimate knowledge of the Ivy League admissions process, this just isn't true at all.

If the hiring partner isn't an MSU grad, a UM Law grad will get a job over an MSU Law grad 95 times out of 100. On top of that, even the LSAC (the legal equivalent of the College Board) recognizes the inherent difference in the schools by weighting undergraduate UM and MSU GPAs differently when considering graduate admissions.

They have an inferiority complex because they're inferior. It's really self explanatory.

I'm a student at U of M but I'm fine being called a Walverine, it still places me above Spartans on the ladder of life.

It is so cold and windy downtown today. A nice shepherd's pie or a hardy stew sounds really good right now. I'll ask my UM grad employees about the "ladder of life" after I'm done having lunch at Connor O'Neils. I might even contemplate some much needed disciplinary measures on my way back. One of the employees was late today. Gone with the wind?! Too cliche? Ah, the ladder of life. Good one.

    Notice the keyword, "most."

Law school is a different animal, and it can be argued whether or not it should be so. I don't particularly care about it either. I tend to put science and engineering on a higher level than that. I don't really care if you disagree, either. I think you're exaggerating, but you're also choosing to respond to a level headed statement with something inflammatory to argue your point. So, it's not worth my time to argue back.

Outside the midwest about 95% of people won't care which school you went to.

A large number of people outside the midwest that aren't Spartan fans don't like UM either! *Gasp*

Look, all I'm saying is that it's not a level-headed argument when it's wrong. If you want to view my correct argument as "something inflammatory," that's up to you, but your view of me or my argument doesn't change it's veracity.

EDIT: Also, you're just going off on a tangent when you say that 95% of people outside of the Midwest won't care which school you went to. Obviously, more than 99% of the population of the US will never have any reason to care which school you went to. However, for that minuscule fraction who have any reason to care, we can (hopefully) agree that they'll most likely be in the context of a potential employer or graduate school admissions board. If you honestly think that 95% of those people won't care which school you attended, you're just kidding yourself.
