Interesting question about RR?

  • Saw this on another board directed at West Virginia fans and thought it was interesting. The question was - If you are a West Virginia fan, would you welcome back Rich Rodriguez? So if Rich Rod had the same success at Michigan that he had at West Virginia then left to another school but then wanted to come back, would you support his return as the head coach? There has been some buzz about RR possibly going back to WVU since they have lost the last four games and will probably take another loss against Oklahoma on Saturday.

    No, I would not support the return of a coach who left Michigan for another college job and then wanted to come back. For me, though, that is limited to head coaches. If a coordinator wanted to go take a head coaching job elsewhere and then come back it wouldn't bother me, but if a head coach viewed another college job as a better opportunity, I'd be done with them.

    There is a lot of weirdness about RichRod's departure from WVU that I don't know much about, so I can't talk from that perspective.

    I personally thought it was time for RichRod to go when he was fired, but I also think he was a better coach than how things went in Michigan. I think he is a good coach, and circumstance and luck had as much to do with his failure as some of his bad personnel and recruiting decisions.

    If he was a good coach with a good record that left for a more prestigious job, I wouldn't have a problem with him coming back.

    Yeah obviously zero chance at Michigan but there has been a lot of buzz about him possibly going back to WVU. If you were a West Virginia fan, would you welcome him back?

    It's an entirely different situation. RR is a West Virginia native and a WVU alum. And he is almost certainly the most successful coach they've ever had. He is none of those things to UM. And UM, as an elite program, is a much more desirable destination than WVU. UM would have a larger pool of high quality candidates than WVU. I just don't see UM circling back and rehiring a coach that left absent extenuating circumstances. If it were Jim Harbaugh, and he left for a successful career in the NFL, and then he was available again 8-10 years later when UM was looking for a new coach, yeah, sure. But Rich Rod? I don't see it.

    That's for sure. And really, I wouldn't be able to blame a coach for making a move from a WVU to a Michigan or a similar jump. Yeah, loyalty is valuable, but a coach does have to worry about himself and his family. RichRod never seemed like the Todd Graham type.

  • If I was Wv fan absolutely I'd welcome him back with open arms. He left Wv because he wasn't getting what he asked for from the university and i don't blame him for that. I doubt he does come back though, I work with tons of WVU fans and everyone despises him

  • @Victorsclub-- Interesting... What was he asking for at WVU? I didn't think he was despised by Mountaineer fans so much either, thanks for the insight. Like I was saying, if I were a WVU fan I would give him a very short leash but if he came in and had a ten win season it would make the bitter feelings go away quick.

    I didn't follow the particulars of RR during that time. However, it's obvious to me that he ultimately saw WVU as a stepping stone job. Now with some jobs, that's always going to be the case. But I'd much rather have someone who loved the school and had the passion to make it a "destination" job.

    Also have to wonder how well RR would do in another major conference like the Big 12 compared to the Big East.

    There's enough other good coaching prospects out there. Frankly, I think Holgorsen deserves another year or two.

    Just curious - how many assistants did he bring from WVU to UM?

West Virginia doesn't have anything but the mountaineers so the whole state loves and worships them. In no way did RR use WVU as a stepping stone. He was a lifer. I just think he felt undervalued at WVU and leaving was a way to rub it in WVU's face

    I read 3 and out probably a year and a half ago, so I don't remember exactly, but didn't it have to do with the governor getting annoyed that Rich was more popular in the state than he was? Someone that's read it more recently fill me in.

    He would have never made West Virginia a "destination" job, but he would have given up millions in salary for the effort. Plus he's a West Virginia alumni. I think you could forgive an alumni for doing what is best for him and his family.

    Also he brought several of his staff with him from WVU.

    You should pick up a copy, it's a great book and gives a ton of information on what really happened when RR was the head coach.

    Actually, my comment was about West Virginia, not Michigan.

    I have a lot of friends from WVU...they would rather lose than take RR back. Some of them are even close to the administration.

  • RRod wanted upgraed facilities and when it did not happen he teased with the Alabama job and from my understanding was offered..He turned it down after being told they would make WVU a more attractive school to recruits..when it still didnt happen he told his people to call Michigan.

    I dont blame RR and at the end of the day a man is entitled to make his own choices to better his life..as he did..He wasnt successful at UM for many reasons some his and some not his but he seems like a good guy who is good with the kids and has a passion for the game..If WVU is looking for a coach and RR ends up being the most qualified candidate then it would be lame to hold the past against him.

    I dont see this happening though..i think RR builds a solid PAC12 program in Arizona and WVU doesnt do anything drastic
