Instant Analysis: Wilton Speight

  • I gotta ask:

Al Borges calls a heavy play-action based passing attack. Wilton Speight appears to play out of spread shotgun.

What are you seeing in his footwork that you like that will translate into Borges' offense?

I saw a ton of play action in the sophomore highlights.

Alright, so I've watched both his sophomore and junior highlights. Is it just me, or does it seem like there are two different QBs? I came away much more impressed with his arm strength in his sophomore film than his junior film. It looks like he has good-great accuracy and good footwork when he has the time, but can revert to throwing off of his back film. Hopefully he'll hit the camp circuit so we can see how he stacks up against the nation's best.

Speight broke his collarbone (I believe) after his sophomore year and basically got a redshirt year.

I don't necessarily agree with everything you said, but it wouldn't be surprising if he picked up a lot of new habits (good or bad) between his sophomore and junior seasons.

I am not convinced with this choice, but I am only an arm-chair coach. I and a few of my fellow Alum discussed this topic today. It should be noted we will probably have DG for 1-2 more years. We have Bellomy and now Morris in the fold. Did we really need to stretch and get an elite QB? Or, do the coaches think we have the option to choose a WIP QB recruit with high upside? Would a DC or MO have sat behind DG, SM, and possibly Bellomy?

  • He missed last year too, which could (not saying it is) be the reason why his ranking is kind of low. I think he'll get bumped up to a 4* sooner or later.

Speight plays against outstanding competition in Virginia. One reason why I don't think Cornwell has more offers than he does, is the poor competition he plays against.

That's changing this season , correct?

Didn't Cornwell transfer to a bigger school in OK?

  • Also... just a side note.

Loeffler is now at VT and they've offered about 4-5 other QB prospects including Cornwell.

Now it could be that Speight had no interest in VT, or something else. It will just be interesting to see how this turns out down the line.

Especially with all of the other QBs that seemed to have legit interest in UM (O'Connor, Cornwell, Henderson, Ford) It was clear that Speight was the top guy on our coaching staff's board.

Shane Morris is the "WIP in progress QB recruit with high upside".

To me Speight looks like a high floor/low ceiling kid who is already close to that ceiling. He's the insurance policy.

His stats were impressive last year save one game where he tossed several picks threading the needle. He broke his collarbone the prior year in the first game of the season. He has a gun and can spin it. He has worked hard on his speed and agility. He also plays basketball where he is a pretty good player in a weak league and lacrosse where he is more than solid in a good HS league.

What do you mean by "spin it"? Are you talking about his spiral or his running ability or something else?
