Instant Analysis: Wilton Speight

  • I know this is looking way ahead, but do you think Michigan still going to go after Jayru Campbell next year? With Morris and now Speight, I think it's clear what direction the new offense is going to take. I think Campbell is going to turn out to be a hell of a player and being from Cass Tech I figured he would end up a Wolverine. Two years ago I think it would've been a foregone conclusion that he would end up at Michigan just by looking at what Denard was doing on offense.

My apologies if this has been answered before/is common knowledge.

Sounds like there are some great 2015 QB options, not only Campbell, but Kevin Dillman and Kyle Kearns in California (those would be my top-2 choices as of now), and a few other instate guys like Alex Malzone (Brother Rice), and wildcard Johnny Football-type high school superstars like Austin Kafentzis.

Everyone is acting like the guy can't throw the ball 20 yards. Yeah, he doesn't have Shane's arm but neither did any of the quarterbacks the year before or after.

I'm really excited for Speight - think he can be a really accurate quarterback and is exactly the type of arm Borges wants for his offense.

Maybe I'm wrong, I just see a lot of stargazers out here right now.

I have to disagree with this.

Shane has a great arm, but Cornwell is right there with him, maybe even better. Might have the strongest arm in this class

Personally I have liked Cornwell before he moved up in 247's rankings. He's got a cannon and throws accurately on the run.

Speight has a great frame , good footwork, and is getting coached up by one of the best, so I'm hopeful for his future as well. I just didn't see the same natural arm when I watched him.

I agree...Cornwell just looks natural throwing. Honestly....and y'all can downvote me if you want....he probably is better than Shane Morris. But I still love Shane infinitely more.

What did his junior yr. stats look like?

His stats were impressive last year save one game where he tossed several picks threading the needle. He broke his collarbone the prior year in the first game of the season. He has a gun and can spin it. He has worked hard on his speed and agility. He also plays basketball where he is a pretty good player in a weak league
and lacrosse where he is more than solid in a good HS league.

Per a Magnus comment over on mgoblog, Speight had 24 TDs and 17 ints.

I'm trying to verify because that is a lot of interceptions.

EDIT: it does seem legit because he had several multiple interception games.

He had two early games where he had to force the ball which resulted in picks. His decision making got much better as the year progressed.

Don't worry about arm strength, he has a gun. Russell Wilson and Jake McGee(UVa TE) preceded Wilton at QB. I don't know if his arm is as strong as Russell, but he can spin it and is working very hard.

He threw 10 of those interceptions in his last four games, and seven in the last two.

  • Bass said it well. Wilton has a lot of arm strength and can really spin it. He works very very hard and has been coached up by Steve Clarkson out in Cali. Russell went to the same school as Wilton and that is the connection there. You guys got a good one

Jayru Campbell is not a running QB. He's mobile, but, he's a pocket passer first and foremost.

  • After watching David Cornwell's film he has pretty bad/no footwork in the pocket and you have to take into account that the competition Speight faces is much better than what Cornwell faces.

Film is great from a fan prospective, but if the coaches felt like Speight was the best option after watching him throw live and months of film, I'm fully behind them.

    I guess we disagree.

Nobody I've seen in this class can throw with the velocity Shane can throw it. I'm not guaranteeing that translates to onfield success, but I think as far as pure velocity on the ball, Cornwell isn't in the same class. Analysts and receivers both made it a point this past year to talk about how Shane throws a heavy ball at every camp.

I like Cornwell because he is big as hell and well-rounded - he has a good arm, good accuracy, makes football plays - I don't doubt he might end up better than Shane. In my mind, Shane no doubt has a stronger arm and Speight seems to have the best accuracy (all based on ~10 minute highlight videos, which might be part of the reason why we disagree).

  • I may be having a senior moment recalling the timing of the two games when he had his picks. However, I can tell you with certainty that his decision making got better as the year progressed and a couple of games he pressed trying to make plays to spark a comeback drive against teams with much deeper talent. He's strong as an ox, not going to juke anyone, and will put in the work. I'd be pleased with this pick up.

Ok im worried. Watched his film and am very worried about arm strength. Even short passes have a ton of air on them.

I disagree a little bit about the arm strength. It looks like he gets the ball down the field very well on different occasions with dropping the ball over the defenders and in to the receiver's arms. I don't necessarily believe the short passes with air is arm strength, it could be the fact that he does throw off of his back foot quite a bit which causes the ball to sell on him. Remember Eli Manning's first few years in the NFL that was one of his knocks is throwing off of the back foot causing the ball to be short or overthrown due to selling on him. If he got the ball out a little quicker on short passes that could add zip to the pass as well. He is also only a junior in HS so there could be proper weight and strength added too. That being said I don't think he will ever have Shane's arm, but I do think that he can make every throw needed.

I actually think he would end up being better as well, but either way the future is bright. Especially, if the coaches are planning on taking 1 QB every year.

I do. I went to the Collegiate School many moons ago, my kids went there/go there now so I have seen Wilton play several times. I also saw Russell Wilson play when he was a 9 th grader too. Speight has really improved from his Soph year.

BTW, I have been a Michigan fan for years, I got hooked on the helmets as a kid, learned to hate Woody Hayes, and thought Gordon Bell got screwed by the hype for Archie Griffin. I have always been glad to see Virginia kids go play for Michigan, if they werent staying home to play for UVa. Russell Davis started a decent list of kids who left the state to play for Michigan. I the only game a pulled against UM was when UVa played up there and we lost on the last play of the game when Mercury Hayes beat Rhonde Barber on the last play. Hope Wilton does well up there.

Hot damn, I think yours is the oldest non-staff account I've seen on this site.

This is awesome that we've got an inside man who can report on Wilton Speight over the next year. I hope you'll be able to post a fair amount going forward, I know I'd love to hear more about our new QB.

I would lean towards Speight, but I'm really unsure. In general, Virginia high school football >>>>> Oklahoma high school football.

  • ok so I just watched there highlights back to back and Im actually very excited. i watched there footwork on every pass. Speight is a technician with is footwork compared to cornwell. Speight also seems deadly accurate from his highlights. Clearly not to accurate with 17 picks but from what I saw in the highlights accuracy is def one of his +.

All in all I have really changed my mind and think the coaches have made a great choice. His one flaw might be his arm strength. He still has all off season and his senior year to work on that and from the looks of it he is highly motivated to do that. We also have to remember that he had a pretty serious injury that I'm sure didn't help his arm strength.

I can most definitely get used to having our QB in the class already on board a year away from signing day. Having our signal caller committed and being able to recruit worked wonders with the 2013 class. Im not saying speight will have the same affect but it surely cant hurt.

Im really excited for Speight to be our QB in this class Welcome big guy!!!

Speight plays against outstanding competition in Virginia. One reason why I don't think Cornwell has more offers than he does, is the poor competition he plays against.

  • Alright, so I've watched both his sophomore and junior highlights. Is it just me, or does it seem like there are two different QBs? I came away much more impressed with his arm strength in his sophomore film than his junior film. It looks like he has good-great accuracy and good footwork when he has the time, but can revert to throwing off of his back film. Hopefully he'll hit the camp circuit so we can see how he stacks up against the nation's best.
