I missed on Ty Isaac

If successful, he'll probably jump on a pro offer.

(Don't shoot the messenger, just an outsider's take.)

Certainly there's that possibility, but I was also thinking in terms of my kid getting a fair shot at everything, not getting shafted, etc. Look, any program, corporation, or organization inevitably takes on the personality of the head man over time. I like the idea of my son learning life lessons from Hoke.

Joe Mathis will be playing JC ball next year. Kid won't qualify.

There are conflicting reports about this. Mathis and his camp insist that he's on track to qualify. Also, it wouldn't make a ton of sense for a school like Michigan, that's more academically selective than many other football programs, to continue to recruit him if he had no chance to qualify.

I honestly don't know the exact truth at this point, but I doubt it's a slam dunk that he won't qualify, or else I wouldn't think the Wolverines would waste their time.

  • As others have said, we still have some great OL commits in 2013, and don't forget about Kalis and the 2012 guys. Our o-line should make any running backs look pretty good. Fred Jackson has had a lot of success and knows what he's doing, I'm really confident in Deveon Smith. Isaac would've been really nice, but with 18 recruits already I can't complain. USC is putting together a great class. Going to be interesting to see how successful they are compared to us.

    It happens. My apologies.

I knew it was a toss up and my gut was saying Michigan. I know a few of the Wolverines commits thought they were going to get him as well.

You're not the only one. First time I've seen you miss hopefully you don't miss on a certain Smith as well.biggrin Sorry about your luck here Michigan. I debated who I would rather see him go to today and I decided UM. Him tearing up the P12 has little affect on Midwest happenings. Him playing for UM would hurt tOSU. Anyway you shake a stick at it we were gonna play him 3 or 4 years no matter what.

Smith is not slow. He just doesn't have breakaway speed. Smith has great vision, the initial burst needed to get through the hole and is very hard to tackle. Smith will have plenty of big runs. He might not hit the 70 yd TD runs but he will have plenty of 20, 30, 40+ yard runs throughout his career at Michigan. People are seriously way to caught up in 40 times.

Reminds me of Darius Walker. Nothing spectacular, but after the games over had 100+ yards and a TD.

We've never been the premier school for 5 star RBs. Instead we get good (and smart) ones that over achieve recruiting expectations in our system and behind our lines. A smart 5 star will realize they can do even better.

    Wasn't Grady a 5* back?

That is not an irrational take. However, Lane has said multiple times that USC is his dream job. In it for the long haul, IMO.

Ditto for Charlie Weis and his long haul. headslap

  • I'll miss Isaac in the Maize and Blue and wish him well. Can't go wrong with USC,though not a fan of the coach. How are the defenses in the P12?

  • How are the defenses in the P12?

They can't stop anything. So either the P12 has the best 12 offenses in the country or P12 defenses are terrible. We can only look at bowls and out of conference: That says the latter.

I was happy that you were wrong on this one Steve. You do a great job in the Midwest for 247 though. Michigan is having a great class regardless and hoke seems to be a great coach

    This.

While I am glad Ty is a Trojan there was a reason Michigan was his other finalist: great tradition, great academics and an up-and-coming coach who seems to have righted the ship. You guys will be fine.

Stanford's been good for a while, SC's should be really good the next couple of years, Oregon have improved their front four, Washington's now got Justin Wilcox which is a massive upgrade at DC, UCLA's can't be any worse, Utah has arguably the best defensive player in the country in Star Lotulelei. Basically much better than last year, which was the weakest in a while.

    You could be right
Not sure exactly why, but sometimes a kid can't qualify for one school and he turns right around and gets into another one
And I dont think it is based purely on one school having higher standards than another

    Remember Eugene Germany?

He actually enrolled ar USC and after a week, our admissions people said he didn't qualify so he went to Michigan and was let right in

It must have something to do with some schools accepting certain HS classes and others not because I am in no way implying that Michigan has lower standards

Can anyone shed some light on this, and the Eugene Germany situation?

    Do I remember this correctly?

  • Exactly I just don't understand why some of these skill position recruits don't see how stout are offensive line is projecting. If I was a running back with aspirations towards the NFL that is one of the first things I would look at. Every time a running back is interviewed after a great game he credits his lineman.

I'm not overly familiar with the Eugene Germany situation, as I wasn't covering Michigan at that point. Hopefully one of our vet posters can chime in here. Like you said, I would assume it had something to do with which classes each college could accept, but that's just speculation on my part.

Not at all disagreeing with you. However, we get into this discussion all the time on the Iowa board, as the fans get frustrated that the Hawkeyes don't land more top skill position players when they know they'll be playing behind an outstanding offensive line.

In theory, you'd think that type of thing would pay off more than it does. But if I'm Billy Tailback, and every major program in the country is recruiting me, they're all going to tell me that their current offensive line and their future offensive line recruits are the best around. Some recruits will have the contacts to determine the actual truth, but most don't.

For example, there was a 2012 offensive skill position player that Iowa was recruiting very hard (long story, but both sides ultimately decided to part ways), and Boston College was one of his top schools as well. Every time I talked to him, I could tell the BC coaches had done an outstanding job of convincing him that they'd have the best offensive line for him to play behind. In reality, Iowa's track record at that position is by most measurements much better than BC's. But it was up to the Iowa coaches to sell that.

Not familiar, but in that case it could be the criteria for the classes he took in HS. He could need 4 years of a subject to get in a a certain school, then only need 3 to get in at the another school.

Exactly. It's all about recruiting and selling as much as you can and being mostly honest at the same time.

  • I think Thomas Rawls is going to be a special player. He's got all the tools to be an elite back in college. I think our RB depth is great right now with Fitz, Rawls, Hayes, Johnson, Smith, and Shallman. Johnson has the potential to be one of the best backs out of all of them. His frame is ridiculous and our strength coach will def. make him a monster. If he gets the vision and cutting ability down, look out. Kid could end up being one of the biggest surprises of the class by his sophomore/junior year. I don't think Hayes ever sees the field as a true tailback. Maybe on third downs. I think he and Norfleet in the slot would be lethal, catching slants and digs. Get them the ball in space and we'll see the big play. Our RB's don't necessarily need to have breakaway speed. Just move the chains and let Shane go to work with the speedy slots and big tall redzone threat WR's.

I know in USC's case, most of the players who signed LOI's that never qualified, had either transferred High Schools and especially public to parochial or vis/versa
Religion courses have been key in some of it
