I missed on Ty Isaac

It's starting to get frustrating how we cannot reel in these elite skill position prospects save Morris. I just have a feeling that our offense will still be really good but won't have too many big plays. We needed Isaac for that and if we lose out on Treadwell we're in trouble.

Sorry, but posts like these with the recruiting class we already have makes me want to rip my hair out. We're not in any danger of being "in trouble" even if every last one of our top targets picks someone else.

Well... except for nose tackle.... maybe.

Man, not that I don't like the kid, but between Hayes, Johnson, Houma, Norfleet, and Shallman, Michigan already has five scholarships devoted to running backs who may not even be running backs. You keep adding them and it starts to become a scholarship penalty.

I agree you can't waste scholarships on players just because you have them, but I think you are lumping a lot of different types of players into the same bucket.

Hayes... I don't really see where he fits at this point. He's got speed, but unclear if he will beat out Fitz or Rawls for playing time.
Houma is a fullback, plain and simple. He'll redshirt this year while Hopkins and Kerridge play the position, not play very much his RS Fr year when Hopkins is a senior, and then be a 3-year starter at a necessary, but not glamorous, position.
Norfleet is going to be a 4-year contributor on kick return and punt return and likely will see situational time at WR or RB. Given our lack of production in the return game, I don't mind scholarships used on somebody who might be able to get us an extra 5-10 yards of field position each return on average.
Drake isn't on campus yet, so can't really comment on where he will fit. This was a flier on a kid with ridiculous stats in high school.
Shallman hasn't signed an LOI yet, so he's over a year from getting to campus and could prove to be a legit RB threat, or grow into another position. You don't pass on top local kids though who are special athletes like he is. Just the fact that a high school junior was willing to put in the effort to train with Barwis in his free time shows a work ethic that fans will appreciate.

It's probably a slim chance Edwards gets an offer, but if he has a great senior year I wouldn't be shocked to see it happen. Norfleet will play this year, so if you take a kid liked Berkley, you redshirt him and then he's 2 years apart from Norfleet as a utility athlete.

  • I really like Smith. Sucks for you guys to miss out on Isaac, but you have a great one on board already.

Hopefully all but 1 weekend a year (when we eventually get back on the schedule since it feels like we haven't played in forever). But yeah, I think he'll be a very good one.

Agree. Also, I expect one more guy to come. We will see.

Sorry didn't mean to sound like the world is ending. I think the offense will still be top notch, but without these elite skill position players I just am beginning to wonder if it will be a NC capable offense and an offense that can come back from a large deficit.

It just seems to me like we don't have a "quick strike" offense with the players that we have recruited thus far.

    Fair enough.

But... if we're going back to "Michigan Football." You should not be expecting a quick strike offense.

  • I was happy that you were wrong on this one Steve. You do a great job in the Midwest for 247 though.
Michigan is having a great class regardless and hoke seems to be a great coach

Winning the academic award in the SEC is sort of like winning the special olympics. Even if you win, you are still a retard.

    It happens. My apologies.

I knew it was a toss up and my gut was saying Michigan. I know a few of the Wolverines commits thought they were going to get him as well.

    It's all good.

Smith is an excellent back if they don't grab another one.

Congrats to Isaac and best of luck to him.

But he does have a point. Not that our offense will be 'quick strike' again, but if you want to compete for a NC, you need elite talent that can make big plays. Frankly, I just don't see any RB that's going to be on our roster in the next few years who can do that. Isaac seemed to have the size/speed combo to do so. Smith is a very mature runner and should have a productive career, but the man is SLOW; going to have a hard time breaking a game open against good competition.
The good news is that we do have Morris, so if we can get a couple more elite WR, we can make up for it. Pretty much every analysis of modern day football shows that the passing game is more important to success than the run game.

Smith is not slow. He just doesn't have breakaway speed. Smith has great vision, the initial burst needed to get through the hole and is very hard to tackle. Smith will have plenty of big runs. He might not hit the 70 yd TD runs but he will have plenty of 20, 30, 40+ yard runs throughout his career at Michigan. People are seriously way to caught up in 40 times.

well that's the problem...if the offense isn't a threat to score on any given play, then it's just not a NC-worthy offense. We need fast skill guys that can really make defenses pay for a blown coverage/assignment and/or just flat-out burn people. Without that, we're not going to be competitive on a national level, which is what the goal should be.

Can we ban posts like this? I hate unwarranted speculation that makes us look like bucknuts.

Eh, Smith looks slow to me. He can't outrun his highschool competition. This has of course probably helped him develop the very mature running style of which he uses the great vision and quick feet you mentioned to get up field unlike most highschool runners. But honestly, I don't see how he's going to ever break a big one without a convoy of blockers ahead of him. If we want team to be truely elite, then we need the offense to be a threat to score on every play, and the players to make that happen.

    MercuryHayes

  • Has anyone watched video on Jordan Wilkins? His running style is very similar to Isaacs....my issue with only having Smith is a depth issue of talent at RB, we really needed Ty or one of our remaining prospects to have a solid 1-2 punch and hedge on injuries.

mike hart did not have break away speed and i would take him over ty 100 out of 100 times.

There have been plenty of running backs who didn't have great top end speed that i would say were elite. Emmitt Smith, Barry Sanders, Terrell Davis just to name a few.

This I can agree with 100%. I wanted Isaac for the competition and depth he would of provided at RB.

There are kids out there that have just turned 17 and are about to become senior rbs who are just growing new bodies. A couple of those kids will turn into studs, happens every year as not everyone is a man at 16, and if we get one of them we won't miss the guy we just missed on.

  • I always liked Green. Did you know he lost 50 lbs and improved his 40 from 5.0 to 4.4. He's faster and shiftier than isaac. Breaks tackles too.

He's got a chip on his shoulder to improve. Perfect fit for Michigan. He or De'veon will be better than Isaac in 2014 behind our OLine.

  • isaac would have been a great addition and given us what seems like a perfect back for our system. however, we have power and speed coming in in this class and I hate when people say shallman is a fullback, coaches have said many many times he is a running back.
The running backs on the roster are pretty good too I might add. we have only seen glimpses of rawls and he looks to add power and speed so im not sure why everyone is so down. we need to add one elite receiver but poggi has always been the biggest piece left on the board. we need a play making 3 tech that isnt on the roster as of right now and there doesnt seem to be too many out there.
like i said, isaac would have been great, but who needs a quick strike offense when shallman and smith are averaging 6 yards a carry behind that line. we can control the game with these heavy hitters!
as we continue to stay in the national spotlight it will not take long to become the premiere school for running backs, receivers and quarterbacks once again.

We've never been the premier school for 5 star RBs. Instead we get good (and smart) ones that over achieve recruiting expectations in our system and behind our lines. A smart 5 star will realize they can do even better.

To me, any offense is a threat to score on ANY given play. Some clubs are more of a threat than others. I am growing tired of the "we dont have enough elite talent to win NCs" comments. Those arguments fly directly in the face our coaching staff. Thats what coaches do. We will have peices in place to compete for a NC very soon. Let's allow our staff to form a TEAM of smart, solid players to form one elite unit... Teams 133, 134.....
