I missed on Ty Isaac

  • It happens. My apologies.

I knew it was a toss up and my gut was saying Michigan. I know a few of the Wolverines commits thought they were going to get him as well.

  • We forgive you, as long as you correctly predict Treadwell to Michigan :)

Seriously, any idea on who Michigan turns to now? Green or Wilkins?

Michigan already has a great back in this class in Smith. The Wolverines currently trail with Green. We'll see what happens moving forward.

As you said, Wilkins looks to be one of the top targets at running back now. His June visit to Ann Arbor will be crucial for Michigan's chances with him.

  • Deveon Smith will be the best running back recruit in this class, and that is certainly nothing to be concerned about. The kid can play.

Derrick Green seems like a bigtime longshot, and here are a couple of 2-3 month old quotes from Jordan Wilkins:

“Ohio State told me when I come up they’ll probably have an offer for me,” Wilkins said. “They said they want to get to know me more. I don’t think I’m too interested in Ohio State because it’s far up in the North and I live in an SEC town."

“And a school I know I’ll have a shot at playing, early playing time. A coach I get along with, a coach I would like to play for. A team that’s pretty good because I want to be at the top. The SEC is where I want to play.”

  • ahh kid obviously likes the glitz and glammer of LA. hope he enjoys not going to a bowl game in the next few years ( i mean no shot at him). Just a matter of time before there hit with more sanctions. History always tends to repeat itself. Hell if we need another rb sign me up, I'll gladly run behind that oline anyday of the week

Wilkins definitely does have a preference for the SEC as of today. But he's got family from Ohio, and other members of his family currently living in the Detroit area. Once he gets more of a feel for what those two schools have to offer, I wouldn't be surprised to see him reconsider playing in the B1G.

    Keeping my fingers crossed.

Since I'm convinced there won't be another elite back joining this class, are there any regional sleeper types we should be keeping an eye on?

And are the coaches looking for more of an APB to complement Smith, or are they really not picky?

  • I've said from the beginning I really like Smith, in some ways more then Isaac. Still annoys me that USC can swoop in and steal a midwest recruit despite all their issues. Our spots are getting tight though so hopefully we can turn this around on USC and steal Mathis.

One important point to make is that, if Michigan was going to miss out on Ty Isaac, the timing here is pretty good. This gives the Wolverines plenty of time to regroup and identify other top targets at that position, whereas it may have been a little different story had he waited another few months.

Wilkins and Green appear to be the top two targets as of today, but I'm sure some other backs will emerge on Michigan's radar now that Isaac is off the table. As for the type of back Michigan is looking for, it seems like it's just a best back available type of approach, rather than looking for a specific skill set.

Man, not that I don't like the kid, but between Hayes, Johnson, Houma, Norfleet, and Shallman, Michigan already has five scholarships devoted to running backs who may not even be running backs. You keep adding them and it starts to become a scholarship penalty.

I think Houma and Shallman are FBs (why we took 2 on scholarship...) Norfleet will be a KR,PR maybe slot, Johnson is a huge question mark. Between Hayes, Smith(Deveon) and Rawls, I think the position is set for 2013. Plus with the first two WRs (I am not that impressed with as compared to Darboh and Chesson), we need to take 2 more elite guys if available.

  • It's starting to get frustrating how we cannot reel in these elite skill position prospects save Morris. I just have a feeling that our offense will still be really good but won't have too many big plays. We needed Isaac for that and if we lose out on Treadwell we're in trouble.

    UMGoBlue

  • I'm happy with Smith, Isaac would've been nice but Smith is really good too.

Not to be a jerk, but Shallman has said time and time again that he is being recruited to play as a half back, so while he may end up playing sometime of blocking back, can we please consider him as a true running back and not a full back. Houma is a fullback as of today but Shallman is not so can we please stop calling him one... TRUST THE COACHES

I say that because I have seen on numerous sites that he was clocked at a 4.9 40. That is someone who I woulldn't consider a HB.
