I hope we look at a new RB coach next year

    Like it or not son, the RB is a position of weakness on this team. Look at next year, we'll have Fitz coming off an injury and Rawls.

    We whiffed on the kid who went to USC and Green is going to the SEC.

    You haven't answered why you went on tRCMB and Bucknuts and here and pretended to be a fan of all three teams.

    I am surprised how little love there is for D. Smith he will be a beast behind our AA line.

    I'll bite. The RB/RB coaching situation is fine. The o line play has slipped a little this year, and Fitz seems to be hesitant going north and south. This will all improve as Michigan moves to "under center" formations.

    Our running back play is not fine! Not even close. That is a direst reflection on the coaching IMO. We need these guys to get north and south with-in their first two steps that is not happening. Typically it is at least three steps going nowhere and quite a bit of hesitation after that deciding how to get outside instead of sticking it up between the tackles and getting what they can.

    I don't think we need to get rid of Jackson at this point, but this year has definitely been a disappointment and it's not just the offensive line IMO.

  • Let us state another reality though. We haven't really been recruiting top 5* talent to the RB position. We got close with Dee Hart. Even Fitz was a 3*, no? Don't get me wrong, I love Fitz, but it shows that is another position of need which had to be rebuilt under Hoke.

    I think with Smith coming in next year, and potentially Green, that helps somewhat. Green I feel would be somewhat a gamechanger.

    What the hell else is it than the offensive line? Fitz was a 1000 yard rusher last year, he isn't a bad back.

    I watch the games do you? Fitz spends more time dancing and prancing left and right, then looking at one hole, then another, then let's try and get outside. After all of this indecisive crap he gets tackled for no gain.

    Denard hits it right up the middle when there is nothing and typically gets a couple yards. He has the same offensive line as the backs.

    Blame the OL for the RB's struggles. Yet, Denard tears it up with the same OL. Why can't FJ get Fitz to run north? Why can't he get FT to stop dancing in the backfield? Why does Fitz look like he running in sand this year? None of this is a product of the OL.

    Why was Fitz able to run for 1,000 yards last year WITH THE SAME RUNNING BACK COACH?

    What you are seeing now is the result of the type of RB recruited in the RR era. They are not downhill runners. We have already seen a change in the type of RB we are recruiting and already have commited.

    Denard is not running straight through their defensive tackles, nor is he wearing a cloaking device. He just gets the ball going in the right direction. Sometimes there isn't much there and the ball carrier has to tough it out and try and get as much as he can. I don't see that with anyone except Denard and Smith sometimes will stick it up in there.

    I'm not impressed with the RB's over the past 3-6 years. I still can't explain why I see Vincent Smith ahead of Thomas Rawls on a regular basis.

    1. Because Hayes and Rawls haven't developed sufficient vision yet. They both miss cuts and holes, but that will improve with practice and game time.

    2. Because Vincent Smith is a devastating blocker.

    Plus most of his success is on veers. They work precisely because you don't have to block the guy at the point of attack.

  • Last year, with Molk at center, we were creating holes that Toussaint would see nothing but daylight. I am not sure, but as memory serves I can't remember that happening even once this year.

    Even with Denard...most of his long runs have been his own creation this year. Last year, there were several plays where Denard broke free not because of his feet, but because of the OL.

    I think our RBs have room for improvement, to be sure. I wish Rawls for one would be a '3 yds and a cloud of dust' kind of back. But it is clear to anyone that watches game film where the vast majority of our problem on offense is this year.

    I understand that Denard is a better runner and put in a leveraged position most of the time as a running quarterback, especially as talented as he is.
    What I don't understand is the continued tendency of our running backs to prance around and keep looking for a crease and not sticking their foot in the ground and trying to get as much as they can. The vision needs to be trained moving forward not sideways IMO.
    Chris Howard somehow figured this out. iirc he almost always resorted to sticking it up into the fight and toughing out a yard or two. Same coach

    I didn't say the play is fine. I said the situation, ie personnel is fine. Michigan has a power back in Rawls, incoming power back in Smith, and possibly Green. They are a better fit for an under center formation. Read better, please.

    Should FJ drive up in a van and throw a pillow case over recruits heads and toss them in the back? There are 100+ reasons why recruits choose to attend a school. FJ isn't going anywhere. Sure the RB's haven't been stellar but there could be a number of reasons. OL for one. Maybe because the defense is stacked.

    There's that "we" thing again.

    Deveon Smith will be a beast. I think the kid has a chance of doing a Mike Hart and starting as a true freshman if given the chance.

    Your right I apologize you dumbed it down plenty. I hope Rawls starts showing a little more of this power cause I'm not seeing it. He is a big guy and has a few good runs but he just doesn't get low enough through the line of scrimmage. Last week he backed into the end zone. Pads need to be lower and more square to the line of scrimmage.

    Fitz looks like a different runner to me this year. He has looked slow and lacking the same explosiveness he had last year. Just doesn't look the same to me.
