I LOVE the Michigan stand on commitments,

  • HOKE & CO asks the kids before they commit to Michigan if they are ready to end their recruitment? Why? Because when a kid is committed to Michigan the school and coaches are equally committed to you. So before you commit be sure you do your due diligence and know what you are committing to with Michigan. If you (the recruit) wants to look around, fine do so, just do not commit, because if you commit to Michigan and you decide to look elsewhere. You will be uncommitted in our eyes since your commitment to Michigan was not a true commitment.

In other words, you can look around all you wish before you commit, but after you commit and you look at another school, we will pull your schollie and you can look all you wish!

I LOVE THIS POLICY! The kids learn from day one what it means to be a man and to make a commitment. Then if they decide differently, they suffer the consequences. Son, this is how you become a man!

This way the only person who is pissed is Meyer and Ohio, because when we have most of the blue chippers outta Ohio and their response to Meyer & Co is, "Thank You Sir, But I am committed to Michigan, now, please leave me, my family and friend alone!" What a way to be a man!

    GO BLUE!

  • I agree completely. However, it obviously didn't eliminate decommitments this year. I forget where, but I read about a recruiting analyst who suggested that the terminology used in recruiting be changed. Rather than verbal commitment, call it verbal intent. I kinda like that idea. Maybe reserve the term verbal commitment for a situation when the HS school coach doesn't allow decommitments.

    Verbal intent, Letter of Commitment.

OK, but I think it'd be worthwhile to distinguish the case where de-intenting (?) is not allowed by the HS coach. So undecided, verbal intent, verbal commitment, and letter of commitment as the different stages?

  • While it certainly didn't stop decommits (we lost Standifer and Stacey right?) I still think its lessens the probability because we want kids to feel 100% comfortable with us when they commit.

  • This is what happened with Pharaoh (sp?). He committed and stopped looking. Then, he decided to look at Oregon. Once that happened, I believe that Hoke & Co. took away the verbal intent and did not consider him part of the class.

Anyone else have more sufficient or accurate details? My point here- I love the policy and the fact that they enforced it.

Oh, I agree. Just think it would be helpful to have some idea of how comfortable we should be with a recruit's commitment. There's already soft vs solid, so maybe that does the job, but that just seems very subjective to me. Maybe only because I have no idea who decides that and how.

  • I have to agree with the practice in princple.... but I do believe this to work against us somewhat in that it may reduce the number of early commitments. Leading to some individuals heading to other programs. It would also lead to more leg work the staff's part in order keep a kids interest over an extended period of time. Im sure they remain in contact often anyway but it would seem that they would need to allocate quite a bit more time than they would if the kids provided a "solid" commitment.

Completely disagree, Michigan is a special one and only place. Bama was touted for their tradition after they won the 2nd SEC championship game. Michigan has more tradition and more storied than ND and every other school bar none. Yet it was only Rutgers and one or two others schools who actually have a longer history than Michigan in playing CFB.

But as the winning-est program ever in the history of the game, arguably the finest facilities in CFB. Hell at Michigan we have not one but two indoor practice facilities. We have the biggest stadium in CFB and it is getting BIGGER. The largest fan base, and a standard that demands a high character, morals and values.

Michigan can schedule a home game anywhere in the 4 corners of this great land and it would sell out. Only ND could do that, and as a marketing brand Michigan is a WORLD WIDE BRAND. There are so many other reasons why, but Michigan is Michigan and we offer a student athlete options and a commitment to them as they are committing to Michigan.

Therefore, we do things the right way and we offer a second to none opportunity. After all, what is the value of your degree if you have credits that will not transfer? Consider that thought!

What are you smoking? UM didn't come close to getting the majority of blue chippers out of Ohio and couldn't close on Brionte Dunn despite "pulling an Urban" in an attempt to recruit him. OSU's successful recruitment of more 4-star athletes than the rest of the Big10 combined speaks VOLUMES. Like them or not, Urban Meyer and Brady Hoke put the rest of the Big 10 on notice. UM's problem is that the gate to Ohio that opened so briefly, just slammed shut.

Really? Because we've offered a bunch of Ohio guys already and they're really interested. Even after Meyer came how many guys did he switch from Michigan?

Exactly how did it slam shut? Because you kept a kid that grew up an OSU fan and was also an OSU commit? We've already got a top 3 player in Ohio for 2013, so I don't really think anything is shut.

  • It will be harder for Michigan to recruit the top players in Ohio now that OSU's sanctions are sorted out and they've hired a big name coach like Urban Meyer. I doubt many would dispute that. But I have to laugh when I hear bucknuts claim "the gate around Ohio is back up".

I think Hoke will be even more successful at recruiting this year (2013). He's now been on the job for a year and is much more familiar with the 2013 Midwest kids. And Hoke now has a nationally respected resume. Hoke won multiple coach of the year awards because he took a mediocre 7-6 team all the way to a BCS win in the Sugar Bowl finishing 11-2.

Chances are we won't take as many kids from Ohio this year. But, in one short year, Brady Hoke has made Michigan a much more attractive school to so much of the rest of the country that it won't matter. Next year should be even better for us. We've already got a 5 star qb and near 5 star safety (from Ohio, lol).

You are the usual delusional worthless bucknut. You never got the sanctions you deserved based upon more than 10 years of CHEATING. But that is ok because Meyer will get caught cheating and lying. We caught him with his pants down with the Stonum recruitment. It was so funny when he was confronted and was SPEECHLESS.

As far as a wall around Ohio, you are most assuredly smokin crack or blowing snow dude. Michigan will get who we want and there is NOTHING ohio or the joke school down south and Meyer can do about it.

We have better relationships with many HS coaches who along with all the kids love us. Why, character, honesty, loyalty, integrity, our word is our bond and what is even more important. "What is the use of a ohio degree when their credits do not transfer." The value of a Michigan degree is one of the FINEST in the world bar none dude, and ohio is not even close, period!

Say what you want, think what you will but face reality, you always have been 2nd fiddle to Michigan and the SEC and you always will be LOSERS!

By the way, just consider how worse off your program will be after Hoke and company cause greater health issues for Meyer and he is gone in 4 to 5 years. Face reality, you bucknutss are dreaming.

In 2012 Hoke offered 28 Ohio kids and got 9 of them. So far the coaches have offered sixteen class of 2013 Ohio kids. With the talent in Michigan not being as robust as it was in the 2012 class, perhaps Hoke ends up with a similar number of OH recruits.

It will not be as difficult as many think. We had issues with Carr just before he retired because he slacked off. We also had issues because of a spread attack with RRod. But the greatest issue to why we had difficulty was the excessive cheating by Tressel and that joke school down south.

The new Michigan staff has tremendous relationships with the Ohio HS coaches. Everyone knows who also has a high standard for character and moral values as well, it is not ohio. Everyone also knows Tressell cheated for 10 years and they know Meyer is a cheater and a liar.

That school down south will get caught before Meyer is gone in no more than 5 years. They are a rouge program who currently are figuring out how to cut kids, create medical issues with scholarship athletes and more so Meyer can implement the SEC screw the kids standards.

We will have so much fun beating the piss outta these worthless bucknuts. Note that I would not be so hateful if bucknut arrogance would face reality and realize they are so close to getting the death penalty. They cheat in basketball and football and thanks to Meyer, the B10 coaches will now let the cheating news slip to the NCAA. Why? Meyer has begged for it. He cheated at Florida and he will, guaranteed and no doubt will happen at the school down south.

I'm not crazy about Ohio State either, but you are simply dilusional if you don't understand the Buckeyes have dominated the Big Ten for years.

With the new coaches at UM and OSU and the recent success of MSU and Wisconsin, I expect wide open races in the Big Ten in football just like we are having in basketball...

  • This is not rocket science guys this is simple. There are two teams, ok Sparty, TWO TEAMS ONLY, in the Big Ten that pick and choose who they want: Ohio State and Michigan. That is the unfortunate truth for the rest of the conference. No disputing that.

Hoke will have limited success in Ohio. That 'limited success' will include the kids that grew up like himself that rebelled against the Buckeyes and wanted to be Michigan fans (which is the minority) and the guys that Urban doesn't want. I don't mean that as in those guys will not be good players. Lets face it, second tier players in Ohio High School football programs are better than most states first tier. But bottom line is, the best Ohio players that are Buckeye fans, and the best Ohio players that have no allegiance to OSU or Michigan, will likely choose Urban over Hoke.

Not talking smack when I say this but I am sure it will be taken negatively....but Hoke still lacks the pedigree of Urban. Few, if any, match his pedigree. The media love him and that does not hurt. His past success does not hurt. Hoke overachieved year one, but he will have to do it for a few more years before he can be labeled in the same category (or even sentence) as Meyer. Have to remember, these are 17 and 18 year old kids that have watched Urban hoist glass footballs over the last eight years while Hoke was making a name for himself still.

Sorry Sparty. Like you more than Blue. But facts are facts and you guys are still second tier in the Big Ten. Top of the second tier, but still second tier.

I followed Foubazzi down here and I agree with some points, disagree with others. Hoke did have a good year, no doubt. But statements like this, I have to wonder. Everything that I have seen in the past 2 months has actually proved Foubazzi is correct (above). I don't want to sound pompous in my following observation, but Reeves and Dunn, not to mention Garnett, Diamond, etc. are not boding well to support this claim that you will get who you want now, Maize N Blue. I think the past few months have been an indication that when tOSU has a coach of Meyers caliber, and there is consistancy in the program (no looming sanctions, interrim head coach, etc.) then it will be much harder for Hoke to have success in Ohio or head to head with Coach Meyer. Trying not to be too big of a homer, but the past 2 months have been very revealing of what we can expect moving forward. I know the jury is still out on you getting Kozan, good luck to you with that one guys. I for one am looking forward to your AL game next year. Make the B1G proud.

The reality is that Michigan has always been able to get players out of Ohio and that won't change with Urban. No, we won't get the pick of the litter like Ohio but that's part of being the instate power. Just like Michigan generally gets who they want out of Michigan with the exception of a few that either don't qualify academically(Burbridge), have ties to MSU, or legitimately choose someone else(Elmer).

Besides, Michigan is among the elite in being able to recruit top 10 classes consistently despite not being located in a talent rich state. Both teams are going to get a ton of talent so it's going to become about who develops and utilizes that talent the best. That's the way it should be.

No problem. Like you say, facts are facts. For a 'second tier' program, MSU sure spends a lot of time at the top of the conference. Didn't see Mich or OSU in the Big 10 title game, but congratulations on your recruiting rankings...
