Hypothetical situation: what's your take?

  • Here's the situation. Michigan's top overall recruit on the board in the entire class can take one visit to Ann Arbor at any point between Signing Day of his junior year and Signing Day of his senior year. He has never visited Michigan before, he has no timetable for making his final decision, and he can't take any additional visits to Michigan after that one visit.

When would you want him to visit? Why?

Easy home game vs. that school in Ohio.

  • This season for the msu game. Think you always want a recruit to visit for the biggest game possible as it'll make the biggest impression. Any other season for the night game (and if no night game osu)

I would go with MSU or I had heard at one time the Illinois game was a night game this year.

Everyother year, tOSU game or ND game if it keeps being a night game.

A weekend in January for a home hoops game against MSU, OSU, Indiana, or another B1G power.

I've seen too many early season football visits generate huge buzz, only to fade away as the kid takes more visits (Payton and Banner prime examples last year, but it happens every year). A mid-to-late January visit is best, IMO, because:

    - more time to spend with their potential teammates. They really get to see what the kids do and what it would be like at Michigan, much more so than a football home-game visit because the players are busy prepping and sitting in the hotel Friday night as opposed to hanging out somewhere.
    - more time to spend with coaches. The coaches sole focus that time of year is recruiting, not worried about gameplans, injuries, etc. They can take as much time as needed to talk with a kid and his family.
    - Still get the fan atmosphere of the hoops game, but get to share it with a football player as opposed to a random host that isn't playing in the football game.
    - High school kids are impressionable no matter what they say in interviews, and getting the last chance to impress them is going to be what's fresh in their minds.
    - Students are at the start of the semester in late January, which means a lot more parties and generally a lot more fun things happening on campus as opposed to November/December getting close to finals and end of the term.

The negative for Michigan is the weather, but we managed to land Denard, Adrian Witty (ugh), and Demar Dorsey (ugh) after January visits in the snow.

Each and every other year. That game woke up the old folks at the Big House.

  • Really enjoying hearing what you all have to say. Obviously, showing them what the Big House is like for a huge game (OSU, MSU, ND, etc.) definitely can't hurt. And a lot of times, that may be the best time to visit for some of the recruits. But similar to what Dizzo said, it may be more beneficial with other recruits to have them visit during basketball, during fall camp, between Signing Day and spring practice, or between spring practice and fall camp. Each one of those has its own benefits, and they'd all enable the coaches to spend more time with the recruits. There obviously isn't one right answer, as every recruit is looking for something different, but I do think it's a fun topic to discuss.

Definitely a great time for a visit, but with the way recruiting is happening earlier and earlier, our class is going to be practically full by then. I think a huge fall home game where you can see the atmosphere is still best if you only get one visit. UTL obviously made a huge impression on everyone there, even if we didn't end up getting Banner or Payton. Dymonte committed at the game and it laid the foundation for guys like Butt and Charlton.

This weekend. I think it could be a great weekend for us and commitment are contagious with Hoke and Mattison in the house!

True, but one of Todd's constraints was that it was their only visit for the year, so I was looking at it more like a kid from far away who couldn't take unofficials. Dymonte had been on campus multiple times before, so the UTL was just the final piece needed to commit. Taco and Butt both made more visits after before committing and that visit alone didn't close the deal.

Visiting for a big football game would be a close 2 on my list, but if the kid could only take 1 visit all year, I'd rather have it be as close to signing day as possible.
