Here's the situation. Michigan's top overall recruit on the board in the entire class can take one visit to Ann Arbor at any point between Signing Day of his junior year and Signing Day of his senior year. He has never visited Michigan before, he has no timetable for making his final decision, and he can't take any additional visits to Michigan after that one visit.
When would you want him to visit? Why?

A weekend in January for a home hoops game against MSU, OSU, Indiana, or another B1G power.
I've seen too many early season football visits generate huge buzz, only to fade away as the kid takes more visits (Payton and Banner prime examples last year, but it happens every year). A mid-to-late January visit is best, IMO, because:
- more time to spend with their potential teammates. They really get to see what the kids do and what it would be like at Michigan, much more so than a football home-game visit because the players are busy prepping and sitting in the hotel Friday night as opposed to hanging out somewhere. - more time to spend with coaches. The coaches sole focus that time of year is recruiting, not worried about gameplans, injuries, etc. They can take as much time as needed to talk with a kid and his family. - Still get the fan atmosphere of the hoops game, but get to share it with a football player as opposed to a random host that isn't playing in the football game. - High school kids are impressionable no matter what they say in interviews, and getting the last chance to impress them is going to be what's fresh in their minds. - Students are at the start of the semester in late January, which means a lot more parties and generally a lot more fun things happening on campus as opposed to November/December getting close to finals and end of the term.
The negative for Michigan is the weather, but we managed to land Denard, Adrian Witty (ugh), and Demar Dorsey (ugh) after January visits in the snow.

Definitely a great time for a visit, but with the way recruiting is happening earlier and earlier, our class is going to be practically full by then. I think a huge fall home game where you can see the atmosphere is still best if you only get one visit. UTL obviously made a huge impression on everyone there, even if we didn't end up getting Banner or Payton. Dymonte committed at the game and it laid the foundation for guys like Butt and Charlton.

Hypothetical situation: what's your take?
