I like the idea because Devin Garnder has a lot of similarities to Keapernick. The pistol will also allow Michigan to get in the shotgun more because you can't predetermine where the running back is going to go, which will in-turn help the o-line and running game. Pistol really just keeps things a lot more unbalanced and harder for the defense to prepare for.

I really like this idea. Could really help the running game and be a curveball at the defense. I think we won't see as much of it as we'd like though; it's going to be tough putting in a whole new formation and getting it to run smoothly.

One guy I read about a whole lot on Grantland that they said was key to SF's success was Delanie Walker, because he could perform the "arc block" that was a staple of their pistol formation. I wonder who on the team could do that? Maybe AJ Williams?

My guess would be Wyatt Shallman but there's always a chance he could redshirt, so yeah it looks like one of the TE's would have to make that block.

Depending on who redshirts, I could see Williams doing it, but I think Shallman and Khalid Hill are the primary candidates. They can both move considerably better than Williams and should be able to get upfield into the alley much faster.

I thought about Shallman and Hill but I would think they would be too inexperienced to put in such a position to make a difficult block. If they start working on the pistol in spring training, then Shallman and Hill will also be behind the incumbents. But I definitely think if they keep the pistol in the future that those guys could take on that role.

Good points. Hill could be a good candidate. I think it will all depend if they will be ready this year physically as true frosh.

A possible candidate right now could be Sione Houma or Joe Kerridge. While I think Hill and Shallman are the guys for the future, Houma and Kerridge could conceivably have a lot more experience coming into the fall.

First of all, what is the Pistol (formation or scheme wise)? And why is it called the pistol?

I'm a complete amateur at this stuff but here's a diagram below. QB lines up closer to the line than in the shotgun but farther than in a pro set. Back lines up behind him. It's gaining a lot of popularity because it utilizes mobile QB's (RG3, Kaepernick, etc.). The runs are faster than they would be from a shotgun and allow for more blockers. If you can pull it off the QB can get a better vision of the coverage downfield and will have more time because of the possibility of the run. You need some good blockers like people said above and a QB who can run and throw. I think Michigan could pull it off because DG has legit speed and our line should be better next year. We'll also have a better running game, unless we start running Dennis Norfleet straight down the middle.

The pistol is essentially the old single back set, just out of the shotgun, which really opens up the read-option game.
As Clint said, since the RB is lined up directly behind the QB, it allows for the entire running game to be utilized, with less predictability.
It's a great fit for UM and their personnel. It plays well to Gardner's strengths, and oh yeah... Derrick Green ran it in HS.
