How good was Ohio State this year?

  • Psych*G said...

would actually love to hear clint respond to this one...

And we would love to get that hack Biddle on a free board to respond to his article on the Big Ten coaches stock report.

Staff writers are going to pander to their fan base. If you have a problem with it, mosey on back to Bucknuts.

And OSU wasn't all that this year. Neither was Michigan. The rest of this conversation is a waste of time.

we are playing in the same bowl game as your team did in 2009 and 2010! the only difference we actually won a championship while we are on probation, while you guys...haven't even sniffed a title in what a decade?! And yes you are on probation as well...

Why haven't we banned this clown?

Why is this always the response to some solid discussion? We don't like what they have to say so let's ban him? C'mon, we're better than that right?

Discussion is fine, but mocking Michigan fans on a Michigan board doesn't qualify as discussion in my book. If he can make the same points while acting reasonable then he's welcome to stay Imo.

lol I thought you were a Michigan fan for a second. Having been on bucknuts you should know that you get banned for saying anything that's not pro-Ohio. At least here we let people say why Michigan has done poorly, as long as they explain why and they don't start trashing Michigan in a way that comes across as trolling. Such as saying "If If If and wait til next year are the two most common things your fan base says.."

Go back to your parents basement. This was posted on the Michigan board not yours.

Funny that is your response to a fairly well reasoned argument. I would like to see an adult response to it? I'm a Buckeye fan, and do I think they were a great team? Depends on what you consider great, my gut reaction is probably not, just like the 2002 team. Has OSU had "better" teams? Yes, they have. But I would also argue that any team that can go 12-0 is great. With scholarship reductions, there is more parity between teams. And to win all your games is a pretty big deal. Only two teams did it. Having said that, I agree there were some glaring weaknesses on OSU's team, namely Braxton's throwing, the LB's and our safety play. However, we had an amazing D line, probably the best O line in the Big Ten and the country, and a great running game. I also agree that you can't go from 6-7 to a great year, but even you guys must admit thats pretty amazing? I just wish you guys had offered Harbaugh a few years back, Urb vs. Harbaugh would have been awesome. Instead, you got the Hoke, with a career win average around .500%. You'll never be better than 9-3 with him. And you haven't recruited the skill players (particularly in your 2013 class) to change that. Also, just as a clarification, "Ohio" is the team that knocked you out of the NCAA basketball tourny last year. Ohio St. is the team who beat you 9 out of the last 11 times we've matched up in football. Just wanted to help you get that straight :)

And by the way, the Neb scored 38 against OSU, not 49.

EDIT: By the way, as an OSU fan, I WANT Michigan to be good and do well. Its better for our rivalry and the conference. The Big Ten is down, and we need OSU, UM, Penn St. and Neb to perform well. We just don't have the recruiting base that the south does, and OSU and UM are probably the only two that can pull out of staters from the south by reputation alone. I'm impressed with your 2013 O-line haul, but think you haven't picked up the skill players you need to become a "great" team.

I think that some of your points are reasonable. I think Urban did a great job with that team, no question. He deserves a lot of props.

Of course, your point about Hoke and 9-3 is already false...we were 11-2 last year. As for skill players...meh. We will see.

As for OSU being great? well, you can make your argument. I think even outside of Michigan fans, there are very few sports fans that think OSU was great this year. Good, yes. Great, no.

The suckeyes are by far one of the worst undefeated teams I can ever remember and that is the absolute truth. Look at their schedule and how they won. It wasnt impressive by any stretch of the imagination if your trying to include yourself with the nations elite. I KNOW we werent that good and can admit that, so save the "we beat you" argument. Good yes, great not even close.

As far as the Hoke hiring, we will never be better than 9-3? We just went 11-2 last year dumbass

And for clarification, we beat that ass 9 out of 10 years with Cooper before that weasel coach Tressel. All you sucknuts must have a short term memory or be very young and not remember that. College football is cyclical and im sure we will see many more ebbs and flows in this series throughout our lives.

I don't think you can go from a 6-7 record one year to a great team the very next year. They were the very best team in the league, and probably will get better next year. Take the 12-0 with the sense of accomplishment, and set higher goals for next year. There is plenty of room to improve.

You beat us by 5 points in Columbus. If we had swapped scbedules, we would be 12-0 and you would be 8-4. You're blind if you can't see that.

Weird, OSU and UM both played Nebraska. OSU crushed them, UM lost. What was that about swapping schedules again?

Big difference being at home vs. on the road.

It's posts like this that annoy me. It's apparent that you know Ohio's program, but you don't know much about other programs apparently. Have you ever considered that Hoke's record is affected by the fact that he coached at Ball State? I mean, I know it's hard to believe, but Ball State isn't a traditional football power. They're the fourth best football team in a state that doesn't have very much talent when it comes to football. It's mind boggling to me that Hoke somehow got a school like Ball State to a 12-2 record. In Hoke's third year with SDSU he led them to a 9 win season which hadn't happened since '71. That's a pretty solid turnaround for two schools that aren't exactly football powerhouses.

Also, how out of the loop are you to say that Hoke will never be better than 9-3, when last year Michigan went 11-2?

As far as Hoke at Michigan, he has a 19-6 record. It's certainly not great, but considering that Rich Rod went 15-21 in a three year span I'll take it.

I guess my final point is that I find it funny that Ohio fans are somehow under the impression that "the game" is going to become more one-sided towards Ohio in the coming years. What most don't realize is that the talent gap between and Ohio and Michigan is going to continue closing in the coming years, not getting bigger. Michigan had a solid defense this year (even Ohio fans can agree to that probably) with hardly any NFL talent. Now I like guys like Kovacs and Floyd, but they were limited in terms of their athleticism in my opinion. If Michigan can have a decent defense with only 1-3 NFL picks on it, can you imagine what they'll be like when that number jumps up to 4-7 (this number would be staggered between classes of course).

I certainly agree with you about Michigan needing to do a better job with the skill positions. However, Michigan might sign Green which would certainly help Michigan with the power running game. And as far as Michigan's wide receivers go, they still haven't signed an elite WR like they need to imo. However, I would be shocked if every single WR prospect they signed fell flat on their face in college. Also, Michigan has at least two receiving threats returning next year in Devin Funchess and Gallon, so the situation right now isn't as dire as your bucknut brethren would have you believe.

I've been pondering this question since the last game of the season and I apologize if it's already been mentioned here before but I want to see some honest answers here. How good was Ohio State this season honestly? I really think Ohio State is not as good as their undefeated record suggests. Ohio States non-conference schedule was Miami (OH), UCF, Cal, and UAB. They only won against Miami (OH) convincingly and both Cal and UAB had a shot late in the game. In conference play, OSU barely got by MSU, gave up 49 points against Nebraska, went into OT with Purdue, and Illinois even put up 22 points against the Buckeyes. Im just being an unbiased, honest fan here and I really didn't think OSU was anywhere near as good as an undefeated squad should be. Ohio State ended the season 36th in total defense in country, and 48th in total offense. If a few plays go the other way, OSU could have easily lost to UAB, Cal, MSU, Michigan, Purdue and Wisconsin. What's your guys honest opinion?

The score of the Nebraska game was 63-38. Not 49.

As a Buckeye fan I think we were the 5th or 6th best team in the country this year. I didn't expect that team to go 12-0 and it was difficult to watch at times but they had an incredible will to win which I attribute to good coaching.

I fully believe we WILL be the best team in the country over the next 5 years and Mr. Hoke had better have some serious tricks up his (short)sleeves if he wants to keep up.

  • in 2002 osu won 6 games by less than 9 points, the same could be said for that team as well as this years team, that they just were not that good. lucky, but not that good. and yet just as in 2002 this years team found a way to win. like it or not we were unbeaten, ironically we won 6 games by 7 points or less.a great team, no, but a good team yes, a team that found a way to win.

That 2002 team should really not be brought into this discussion. It was stacked on defense. How many first/second rounders did that team produce compared to this one?
    I guess time will tell.

Urban Meyer played UM the same year UM lost to App State.
Does that mean Urban would have lost to App State??

MSU beat Wisconsin then lost in the ccg, same with bama and lsu.

  • I guess the simplest answer is, Ohio State was good enough to win all their games. That's really all that matters in the end. It's in the books, 12-0, and I'm betting there are about 115 college teams that would like to say that.

  • Interesting thread, I hope the Big gets better soon. What a year, conference football is as weak as its ever been, basketball is the best conference by far. We need the top half of this conference to get considerably better before we are any more than an after thought in college football.

This type of posting suggests that you are either dumb or disingenuous.

    Point #1
    Nebraska played Ohio in Columbus.
    Nebraska played Michigan in Lincoln.

    Point #2
Ohio did not lose its starting QB in the game against Nebraska.
Michigan lost its starting QB and had to rely on its #3 QB (since Gardner was playing WR and partially injured).

And if Ohio had played against Bama, the tree droppings would have lost. Guaranteed.

Chances are that Ohio would have lost at Notre Dame as well.

i think the bucks beat nd...

    imo if the schedules have been swapped;

osu loses to bama and runs the table from there...11-1 (maybe 10-2)

um still loses to osu and brasky and drops 1-2 games from @wisky,@psu and @msu...8-4 (maybe 9-3)

yes, i know you beat msu, but in east lansing would be tougher then in the big house

That one loss to Bama throws the entire Buckeye season off, and they lose to ND and other teams. And since they actually now have a bowl game to worry about, they will have actual pressure on them to perform.

UM (by product of a now easier schedule) doesn't get as worn down, and does beat Nebraska, and wins the rest (we don't lose to MSU this year no what what schedule) and then goes undefeated and since no bowl game, going to claim an MNC.

    These are fun.

I think that game would have gone either way. Don't forget the ND game would have been earlier in the season (same day you played UAB at home). If you played the same way you played against UAB, I don't think you would win that game on the road at night against ND, but it is possible. You improved as the season went on.
