How good was Ohio State this year?

  • Clint Brewster said...

I've been pondering this question since the last game of the season and I apologize if it's already been mentioned here before but I want to see some honest answers here. How good was Ohio State this season honestly? I really think Ohio State is not as good as their undefeated record suggests. Ohio States non-conference schedule was Miami (OH), UCF, Cal, and UAB. They only won against Miami (OH) convincingly and both Cal and UAB had a shot late in the game. In conference play, OSU barely got by MSU, gave up 49 points against Nebraska, went into OT with Purdue, and Illinois even put up 22 points against the Buckeyes. Im just being an unbiased, honest fan here and I really didn't think OSU was anywhere near as good as an undefeated squad should be. Ohio State ended the season 36th in total defense in country, and 48th in total offense. If a few plays go the other way, OSU could have easily lost to UAB, Cal, MSU, Michigan, Purdue and Wisconsin. What's your guys honest opinion?

I love the fact that you had to use the word "was" instead of "is" in the title. No B1G title game and no bowl game, which more than likely would have been playing for a Natty. lol

As for the question, good enough to play for the MN, for all the good it did them.

looking at the schedule they'll have to be favored in every game, or every game but one (michigan). Anything more than 1 loss would have to be considered a disappointment given that there's now time to adjust to the system more and fully implement it. That alone is a pretty impressive(/sad statement given the state of the BIG). The defensive side of the ball will have some more questions but probably won't dip in performance from this year if Roby stays.. I don't really see a loss on the schedule... but 12-0 is not going to happen

True, but that says more about the weakness of their schedule again next year than anything else. Their OOC schedule is once again void of a single quality FBS opponent. And UNL and MSU rotate off their B10 schedule. So it basically comes down to PSU, which will take another step backward due to sanctions and a new QB, Wisky, which will have a new coaching staff and probably a new QB, and us. And we will have a new QB too. Those are the three toughest games they will play all year. It's not entirely their fault, but it's not exactly a gauntlet either. Let's just hope we are much improved next year. We might be the only team realistically standing in their way to another undefeated season.

  • I think the lack of national attention to ohio being out of the running is all that needs to be said. If this were a team everyone thought was one of the best in the country, then all the comparisons to ohio vs ND or Bama would be constant.

I'd say they were in the 7-10 range nationally.

  • They were as good as their 12-0 record as Michigan was with their 11-2 record last year.

They had flaws. They were far from a dominant team.

They got breaks and made the most of them, so give them credit for that. They still have more talent than anyone else in the Big Ten and they proved to be the best team in the conference this year. And knowing how bad the Big Ten is, take that with a grain of salt.

They'll only get better from here.

I disagree. If there weren't any sanctions, there is no doubt that the national championship would have OSU and Notre Dame. The sanctions are THE reason that OSU isn't ranked #2 in the AP.

Even though they didn't look incredibly impressive, an undefeated Ohio State will rank higher than a one loss Alabama more often than not.

Although, I do give props to the national media to giving OSU their 15 minutes of fame after the Michigan game, and then kind of dismissed them until next year. I don't really hear anyone saying "OSU should get a shot".

  • I'd agree with what TAMU said that they're the 8-12 best team in the nation. The best team in the weak Big Ten.

Going undefeated in Urbie Liar's first year is impressive, they're going to be a force in the Big Ten for years to come.

MichandRedWingFan- They can bash me all they want. I'm just giving an unbiased opinion. The fact of the matter is that I'm not the only one that has this opinion of OSU.

I know, just a rub on the locked thread.

I think OSU made their breaks and deserved to be ranked anywhere from 2-7 in the country based on the way the ranking systems are currently.
I personally would rank them about 7-10.
I certainly do not think ND is the #1 team in the country but that is what it is.
They could prove me wrong because they have the chance to though. OSU does not.

  • My take on it is that this was year one for an entirely new system. Osu struggled consistently throughout the entire year. We were very explosive on offense at times and very bad on defense at times but managed to win the games because we had all aspects of a good team step up at different times. We had a good Qb win us games, good OL and DL win us games. Coaching and preparation win us games, and when all else failed a good backup Qb win us a game. None of these aspects of the team all stepped up at the same time that's why we weren't consistent or dominant by any means but we had a good and even kind of a special team this year

    PsychG118453

  • There is a clear divide between ND and OSU this year. Saying they were both undefeated therefore should be 1-2 isn't fair to ND. They actually played semi-decent teams this year. Wins over Stanford, USC, and Oklahoma are each more impressive than any one of OSU's. That's nearly a third of their schedule, not to mention the rest of their schedule was fairly competitive.

If OSU pulled off an undefeated season with ND's schedule (which in no way would have taken place) then I would consider them a top-2 team.

  • I think it was Eaton who said OSU is a fringe top 5 team...I think that is about right.

OSU benefited from a weak Big 10 and a weak OOC schedule. Still, going undefeated is going undefeated. But a bowl game would have given us a true metric of where they are at.

  • I'll try to be a rational Buckeye fan and give my unbiased opinion...OSU is probably a top 10 team (5-8 range). I have been saying this for awhile but I am a little glad we had a bowl ban this year because we could keep the mystique of an undefeated season without ever being challenged by an elite team (sorry Michigan, I do realize this is your board). As for next year, the schedule is just as bad if not worse and by all accounts the team will be better as Braxton will be a junior, players entering their second season under Meyer, etc. I won't sit here and say we are definitely going undefeated because it takes a lot of luck regardless of how talented a team is to go undefeated but I would say OSU will probably be favored in every game next year.

  • Oh Clint, you certainly know how to kick the hornet's nest.

First of all, I think credit is due the Buckeyes. I didn't watch all their games, but Meyer and his staff had some good gameplans, particularly against PSU. And while they benefited a lot from turnovers, many times you make your own luck. Their offense held them together at the beginning of the season and their defense picked up the slack late.

That said, they were fortunate to be undefeated. Too many close calls with bad teams (Indiana, Cal come to mind immediately). Cal was how many missed field goals away from a win? I mean, if you won because of some bad kicks by the other team, how much can you say you really outplayed them? Same way for PSU and Virginia. Yeah, PSU lost (4 missed FG's and a missed extra point) but it was obvious who the better team was.

Honestly, if OSU had played any other truly elite team (Nebraska was not a top 15 team, IMO - PSU should have beaten them), it's likely they would have lost. I'd put them top 10, maybe around 8th or so. Haven't checked the rankings exactly.

Based on how they played, I think they should have been 10-2. Wisconsin should have beaten them with how well they played. And Cal should have won. Frankly, given how poorly Borges was and how many turnovers OSU got close to the end zone, I'm surprised they didn't beat Michigan by more points.

In some ways, OSU played well and deserved wins. In others, they didn't. That's just how it goes. I think the AP's hesitancy to put them in the top 2 indicates that others feel that they weren't "undefeated good" either.

Frankly, if the Buckeyes were as good as a 12-0 record would normally imply, they should've beaten us by a lot more than 5.

Especially with them at home and our QB not being able to throw the ball

We won thats all that matters. We will finish the year no worse then 2 in the AP poll with a very slim chance at #1 if Alabama were to win.

Secondly you talk about could have lost, thats some shoulda coulda woulda talk that didn't happen. Hell, by your arguement was Florida really that good since they could have lost to LA-Lafayette or Mizz. Townson damn near took out LSU. ND should have lost to Pitt, beat UM only due to arm punt giving up 6 TO's in the first half and beat that same Purdue team by only a FG, a whole 3 points. You can nick pick almost everyones schedule but facts are facts, tOSU won 12 games and Lost 0. This same crap thinking happened in 2002 when tOSU played Miami for the National title and if i remember correctly we finished 14-0 that year.....

Thank you for posting. All the typos and made up phrases gave me a great laugh. Michigan may have lost to a mediocre team that went undefeated this year, but you'll never see a Michigan alum say nick pick.

I agree with most of what you said. I'd rate Ohio more around 10 though. Also, if Gardner improves over the offseason and Michigan wins a game at home against ND early, I don't know if Ohio will be favored in the big house on the last weekend of the season.

Sorry, this is in reply to DCGWBuckeye

Ohio has an even easier schedule next year, and should be undefeated going into the Michigan game.

Then we need to beat them for real, and prevent them from embarrassing the B10 in a BCS game.

That's a good unbiased view... I almost spit out my breakfast seeing a fan from your team speaking sense lol. No offense on the elite team, Michigan is not at that level yet. It'll be hard to have all the bounces go your way again next year, but you'll definitely be favored in every game, and then Michigan @ The Big House will probably be close to a pick 'em. I'd say OSU (I didn't say ohio because i'm replying to a rational poster) was a 7-10 team, and Michigan was around 15.

It just never seemed like Michigan's offense got rolling, and when you're OOC games are the top 2 defenses in the country, that makes it a bit difficult to get in a groove and practice you're stuff. Most teams use OOC games to polish their offense & defensive schemes, and deciding how to finalize their depth chart. Michigan had no such luxury, and I think that's something that come up to them later in the season. They just weren't as advanced in their schemes as other teams seemed to be, and w/ Mattison & Borges they both like to use big playbooks.

I never said you didn't face better tOSU teams during Tressel's years but I called out your site MOD who posed this STUPID question with his IDIOTOTIC examples of how we might or might not be as good with a play here or there excuse. Fact is, a missed FG and ND doesn't play Alabama for a Title. There are examples of this all over the place of a play here or their and this team wins or this team would have lost. But Facts are Facts we won every game we played. Had we not been on probation tOSU would be playing ND in the title Game.

First of all, you would not be playing in the national title. Dont be stupid.

Second, you barely beat a ton of teams. You obviously were not some dominant team that smashed all the lowly talented teams you played. And that is the point clint made....and he is correct.

  • By the end of the year i thought the D was solid and getting better every week after moving Boren(which still blows my mind). Especially with everybody healthy. The offense was unpredictable passing but very solid rushing. I put them at #5.

Nobody in the big 12, acc, big ten or big east is better. Oregon aint censored if you have 5 weeks to prepare for their offense. Stanford=big time winnable. Bama, ND, Fla and Uga i would say are better but theyd have a shot against all but Bama. Best shot being ND. I hate that we arent playing them in the NCG bc id really like UFM's chances. He's a beast in BCS games

Also, i dont think the B1G is as awful as everybody states. Top to bottom we match up well with every conference but the sec. Merry Xmas and good luck against Spurrier. I pull for all B1G teams
