How good was Ohio State this year?

  • I've been pondering this question since the last game of the season and I apologize if it's already been mentioned here before but I want to see some honest answers here. How good was Ohio State this season honestly? I really think Ohio State is not as good as their undefeated record suggests. Ohio States non-conference schedule was Miami (OH), UCF, Cal, and UAB. They only won against Miami (OH) convincingly and both Cal and UAB had a shot late in the game. In conference play, OSU barely got by MSU, gave up 49 points against Nebraska, went into OT with Purdue, and Illinois even put up 22 points against the Buckeyes. Im just being an unbiased, honest fan here and I really didn't think OSU was anywhere near as good as an undefeated squad should be. Ohio State ended the season 36th in total defense in country, and 48th in total offense. If a few plays go the other way, OSU could have easily lost to UAB, Cal, MSU, Michigan, Purdue and Wisconsin. What's your guys honest opinion?

Below average compared to the teams Tressel tegularly put on the field during his tenure. They had an unusually easy OOC schedule and won every close game. Even Urbie repeatedly said it wasn't a great team. Give them credit for the Ws, but it was not in any way an intimidating team on either side of the ball.

  • I'd say that if we were ranking the top 25 teams regardless of record, they'd probably be in the 8-12 range.

  • I watched every game they played this year. I understand the thought process behind "a win is a win", but for rational people who watched their entire season unfold, when judging how good the buckeyes were, i would not apply the "win is a win" logic.

In the beginning of the season, when their defense was completely lackluster, I thought the buckeyes were trash. They reminded me of the Rich Rod Michigan teams: will go as far as the stud QB takes them and will have win every game in shoot-out fashion. Any given week, their opponent had the capacity to upset them. Later in the year, when their defense began to gel just a little, I gave them more credit for being a well-rounded team. However, when I see any team finishing a season undefeated, I tend to view them as a 10/10. I would say the Buckeyes were a 7.5/10.

Again, the idea of finding a way to win games can't go understated. When they beat Purdue in OT, everyone was saying "good teams find ways to win". Well I see the Buckeyes just as that, a good team. Not great, not spectacular. They were just good enough to edge out their entire schedule of mediocrity. Urban happened to be their coach, so automatically these 1-4 point victories over very unimpressive teams were perceived as the Buckeyes rolling everyone they faced, and Urban was purposely toying with his opponents.

I think there was a 1/10 chance they went undefeated this year, needing a lot to go their way in about half the games played. They were as fortunate as we were last year, albeit with an easier schedule, and didn't lose. If they were playing in a Bowl game I would put my life savings on their opponent in a heartbeat.

  • Frankly, if the Buckeyes were as good as a 12-0 record would normally imply, they should've beaten us by a lot more than 5.

  • Guess you could say a win is a win and they are 12-0. Really surprised how back the defense played especially since they have multiple guys that will play in the NFL, Simon, Hankins, Shazier, Roby.

You have to give A LOT of credit to their offensive line who definitely overachieved this year. Without that group the team is probably 9-3 or 8-4

We won thats all that matters. We will finish the year no worse then 2 in the AP poll with a very slim chance at #1 if Alabama were to win.

Secondly you talk about could have lost, thats some shoulda coulda woulda talk that didn't happen. Hell, by your arguement was Florida really that good since they could have lost to LA-Lafayette or Mizz. Townson damn near took out LSU. ND should have lost to Pitt, beat UM only due to arm punt giving up 6 TO's in the first half and beat that same Purdue team by only a FG, a whole 3 points. You can nick pick almost everyones schedule but facts are facts, tOSU won 12 games and Lost 0. This same crap thinking happened in 2002 when tOSU played Miami for the National title and if i remember correctly we finished 14-0 that year.....

  • I think its awsome. Because tbey will be expecting another great year next year.....and they will fall on their face

Wrong. The question was how good of a team you had this year not what your record was. A W is a W. Great. But we faced much better OSU teams during the Tressel years.

  • Gotta give them a lot of credit on getting thru some of that with W's. Do I think they're a top 10 team....not a chance. But I feel the exact same about ND, even tho they had a tougher schedule than ohio. Both teams did a great job of doing enough to win the ball games. Lets face it....the Natty game would be Ohio vs ND. I don't think either one of those teams are a complete team. Ohio's defense is suspect and ND"s offense is suspect. So...they beat us and we can't say anything. We had our chance to ruin their season and we didn't.

I never said you didn't face better tOSU teams during Tressel's years but I called out your site MOD who posed this STUPID question with his IDIOTOTIC examples of how we might or might not be as good with a play here or there excuse. Fact is, a missed FG and ND doesn't play Alabama for a Title. There are examples of this all over the place of a play here or their and this team wins or this team would have lost. But Facts are Facts we won every game we played. Had we not been on probation tOSU would be playing ND in the title Game.

  • 5 points better than a 8-4 Michigan team.

If you take into account home field they are more like 1-2 points better.

  • I think that OSU was a top 10 team...but top 5? Probably pushing it.

I think they lose to Alabama on the road, at home, on a neutral field. And if it was the first game of the season like our game? Remember how bad OSU looked in the first few games? They probably should have lost to Cal, for example.

As for Notre Dame...I think a game against them would have been a coin flip. Again, at the beginning of the year, OSU's offense would have struggled. I think right now, that game would be a coin toss.

And you can't dismiss OSU played Michigan at home. Is home field worth a touchdown? I don't know, but maybe.

Then, OSU would face who in the bowls? Oregon? Oregon would give OSU fits too.

So I think OSU is a good, solid team. Just not a top 2-3 team, from what I have seen. That is no knock on them. They had a great season. But I think fundamentally, that is what most experts around the country believe.

Oh, and I bet even if Notre Dame loses, they get ranked ahead of OSU in the final AP poll.

  • I don't think you can go from a 6-7 record one year to a great team the very next year. They were the very best team in the league, and probably will get better next year. Take the 12-0 with the sense of accomplishment, and set higher goals for next year. There is plenty of room to improve.

He was merely providing anecdotal evidence to back up his general perception. The facts are that you barely beat a bunch of average to poor teams to reach 12-0. Your OOC schedule was a joke and the B10 was down this year. In regular season play, Michigan went 8-4. Wisky went 7-5. MSU went 6-6. PSU went 8-4. Etc, etc. Those are all teams you barely beat. You were a good team this year and you won all your games. Congrats. But you didn't play a single top 10 team. Hell, you didn't play a single team with fewer than three losses (and that is before they play their bowl games). And you barely beat several truly bad teams like Purdue and Indiana. You have a great W-L record. You do not have a great team.

  • Well said MrWoodson...well said. I'm not trying to bash OSU and I'm not by any means saying their a bad team. I'm simply saying their not as good as their record and it's interesting they were that good considering they had the 36th ranked defense and 48th ranked offense overall in the country. Buckeye2280- I also think some of the teams you named could be overrated too, but you named off a few close wins by those schools, while OSU had about 6 games they could have lost, not just one or two. My follow up question would be- how good do you predict OSU to be next year after this season?

  • I like to think I'm a fairly unbiased OSU fan and I think about #5 is where we fall this year. Many of you have been very unbiased in this thread, which would seem to be tough to accomplish on these boards. I have said in some of my other posts over here that I think you guys have some very good posters. I agree that this team isn't as good as many of the teams that JT put together. We beat some dogs, also very true. I definitely agree with the poster who praised the O-line play, they were very good and a pleasant surprise. I think these buckeyes by the end of the year could beat nearly any team in the country, although I do not believe they could beat Bama. Also beating Oregon, UF, UGA, and LSU would be a struggle. I would like our chances against ND, but think it would be close either way. To bring this rambling together and answer your question, I think they are a fringe top 5 team who caught some nice breaks.

I'd say that on a neutral field, these teams would be favored over you, JMO.
    Bama
    ND
    UGA
    Oregon
    KSU
    LSU
    A&M
I think the spread could go either way with teams like SCar and Stanford.
