Hoke holding his own

  • Not only did hoke go 11-2 his first year but he did that with RR players. He didn't have the greatest record this past year but that was the end of the RR era. Hoke is recruiting among the best of them. He is competing with urban that has a track record of success. They are hand and hand in recruiting and in my opinion will continue to be like that. As long as Hoke gets his player I could care less what urban and other coaches do. Hoke has already brought michigan back from the dead , now he is working on michigan being michigan of the old. In Hoke I trust.

I think Hoke has done a great job but there are a few things to keep in mind. When hoke went 11-2, he did that with Seniors recruited by Loyd Carr (similar to the system Brady Hoke is bringing). While last year, the seniors, juniors and sophmores were all recruited by RR. Hoke's players will only be sophmores/RS freshman and freshman... we are not completely out of the woods but we are getting close.

  • Hoke is holding his own because of the staff from top to bottom. They are all great people and great coaches and all are striving for the same goal. This is a well oiled machine.

  • The jury is still out on that one for me. This season is going to say a lot more than the previous two seasons combined.

There have been a lot of flukey wins the last couple of years, and the offense has ridden Denard HEAVILY. The recruiting has been good, but a little bit scattershot.

I've been happy with the last couple seasons, but my opinion of Hoke is really gonna start being formed this year.

    bkp1883

  • What do you mean by scattershot? I think it's been excellent with the exception of wide receiver and running back (although I expect that to change in a big way in Saturday.)

That said, I agree with what you said. We had some fluky wins and fluky losses, but I suppose that can happen any season. Really, if denard goes down in ANY GAME except Nebraska, we are playing wiscy for the B1G title.

We've got an extremely navigable schedule this year and if we don't go at least 10-2 ill be disappointed

I think the QB and RB recruiting from last year and WR recruiting from this year were big misses. That said, the RB recruiting from this year, and the OL recruiting from the last two seasons may make me not care about that at all.

  • the jury is out in my book on hoke...i think mattson has as much to do with or more the success of m as hoke. i do not like that he does not wear head phones during the game....its his world but someone please explain this to me? dont see saban or urban or really any other coach do this. how can you have instant input with out wearing them? i have always thought he will be alot like carr 8-4's with a few great seasons mixed in. lastly i am a big fan of "the game" win or lose it is better then christmas day to me (not the birth but the presents) so i like a healthy blue except the nov day they face us.

Jesus, I don't understand why the headset thing is such a big deal. He interacts with his players infinitely more for not wearing a headset, and if he wants to talk to his offensive coordinator, he has an assistant following him around constantly with a headset, who tells him what plays are being run. He and the staff prepare an incredible amount together anyways, and if you see any interviews with Hoke, you'll see that he subscribes to a policy of not micro-managing his coordinators. If he has something to say to Mattison or Borges, he'll say it, but he hired them to do a job so he'll let them do their jobs.

Headset? this is how you evaluate your coaches lol. Probably not a fan of John Wooden if your worried about headsets.

Exactly....I agree with you. Let the DC call the defense and the OC call the offense. You're paying them hundreds of thousands of dollars....that is why you're paying them. Good thought CMXI... I agree with you 100%

I love the fact that the lack of the headset irritates the Nuts. It's like the Ohio thing. UM fans barely think about it and consider it relatively minor, but for some inexplicable reason it drives the Nuts batshit crazy. Maybe that's why Hoke does it. He's from Ohio and knows the culture and maybe he does it just to troll the OSU fanbase.

As for the headset, I don't get the issue. It's also very minor. If a HC hires good coordinators and trusts them, he should let them do their jobs. The coordinators spend 100% of their time each week preparing for the game, looking at film, working with players ... on one side of the ball. And they prepare all week to call plays designed to attack the other team's weaknesses. Why in the world should a HC assume that suddenly in the middle of the game he is more qualified to call a random play? If the HC wants to call the plays himself a la Chip Kelly, that's fine too, but the idea that a HC should regularly step in and call plays when the OC does it for a living and has spent all week (year?) preparing to do it is bizarre. It's either the height of arrogance by the HC or it means the HC does not think his OC is very good.

As CMXI said, Hoke has a GA shadowing him with a headset at all times. If either Hoke or Borges want to talk to each other, he puts the headset on. He also often puts it on toward the end of each half when clock management issues arise. And during timeouts. And Mattison is standing next to Hoke on the sideline so if there ever is a defensive question they can speak face to face.

Coach Hoke did the smartest thing a HC can do when taking a new job ... he hired great coordinators. He got the A team. Coach Meyer tried to do that but failed. He went after Clemson's OC and whiffed. He then went after LSU's OL coach and whiffed. So he ended up with some younger, less experienced guy from Iowa State. Similarly on the defensive side, he was saddled with Luke Fickell because of the odd situation. Dumping him would have been a PR nightmare. And Withers was hired for recruiting. Fickell and Withers certainly aren't A team DCs.

Unlike Hoke, Urbie hired B team or maybe even C team coordinators. Urbie's an offensive guru and probably is heavily involved with that side of the ball all week anyway. If he wants to look over his OC's shoulder and second guess every play call, fine. It probably fits the situation better in Columbus. But Hoke doesn't feel the need to to that. He grew up on the defensive side of the ball and went out and hired a very experienced and very successful OC. If Hoke ever feels he needs to start looking over Borges' shoulder and second guessing every play call, the solution will not be to wear a headset full time. The solution will be to fire Borges and hire a new OC.

  • Agree with all sentiments here. Borges and Mattison get paid alot of money to call plays on both sides of the ball. Let them do it. Hoke has his input when he wants it. I mean, if he wore a headset all the time but spoke on it the same amount as he does now, does it really make a difference??

It cracks me up when Sparty talks about this. They like to blame Roushar for everything but dantonio wears a headset, right? At some point doesn't dantonio, with his headset, say "why are we doing this?"

Calling Ohio State "Ohio" doesn't drive Buckeye fans "batshit crazy" as you put it. We recognize that it is just the normal classless disrespect that Michigan College usually displays. It will be interesting to see how many losses in the Game before Hoke calls his opponent by their proper name.

Seriously? You had to go back 40 years to get TSUN? Even Woody never called Michigan by an incorrect name. I guess that is part of Fred Flintstone's charm up there eh? Sounds like insecurity to everyone else. And he has good reason to be insecure.

What about Urban creating a poster of all the majors the Wolverine players were enrolled in compared to Ohio's players? Was that 40 years ago?
