Hand and Peppers

  • It's been a long time since Michigan had a real shot at a top 5 recruit. But in 2014 we have a legit shot (1/5?) At landing Hand (#1) or Peppers (#2). How do you guys handicap our odds?

    Please no VIP.

  • Probably sitting at around a 30% chance at Hand and a 5% chance at Peppers. Need to get them on campus.

  • I kind of really like our shot with Hand if he follows through with his visit plans (3/16, BBQ, and official during UTL2). I think Michigan really has the best combination of things that he's looking for among all his suitors, and we're clearly out to a good start with him to begin with.

As for Peppers, I think he's Stanford-bound. Definitely much less optimistic on him, but again, I can see us making a move if he comes to campus. He's very into music like McQuay was, and we did a really good job selling our music program to McQuay. Bring that same pitch and we could have success; USC isn't in the picture on this one.

  • I'd say 100% with Hand and 99.9999% with Peppers.

Or maybe a little less each. Our chances with Hand are much better than Peppers, but it's important to remember that both are top-5 prospects who have us in their top 3ish without visiting. That's impressive. We can easily make a big impact on them when/if they visit and have more of a legitimate shot at both of them. They seem like good kids who really care about the academic side of things, so we have that to offer.

But in the end, VT will be very hard to beat for Hand and Stanford will be very hard to beat for Peppers. JMO

  • My over optimistic opinion, I think we land Hand. Percentage wise I would guess around 40% with him. We have a lot of things in our favor going with Hand. Peppers I'm not as optimistic about but I guess we still have a 25% chance.

Peppers is an interesting situation. From MGoBlog: "Peppers also said that he was leaning towards Stanford until picking up strong interest from Michigan and Ohio State." He grew up a Michigan fan and it sounds like Stanford and Michigan are his top two. But he hasn't visited either school. Clearly academics are important ...which eliminates Ohio.

The visits will be critical. I've been on both campuses. At Stanford the academics are incredible but the football program is not. At Michigan the academics are great while the football visits will be over the top.

  • I also think we land Hand. I understand it will be extremely difficult to overtake VT, however I agree with inuyesta in that we seemingly have the best combination of what Hand's looking for in a school. I said this before and I'll continue to mention it, as good as the environment may be at VT, there's no way they will match a) our family atmosphere at the BBQ and b) UTL against ND. I don't know why, but I have a feeling the atmosphere in Ann Arbor on those days will put Michigan over the top for him. I will not be surprised whatsoever if he goes to VT and I will respect his decision if that's what happens, but I do feel good about him going forward.

I don't think we land Peppers. It will take a lot on his visit(s) here to make a move on his list, and until that happens, I don't want to talk about Peppers.

  • I think we should wait until they both visit to determine what the chances are.

But then we would actually know what our chances are, and that's no fun.

    well that sounds pretty boring

  • I don't want to sound like a pessimist, but I think there is only a little over 9000% chance Hand commits, and with Hand in hand Peppers will commit soon after.

  • I don't think we have a good shot at Peppers. I think we get Hand if we have a good year. Good year = 10-2 or better

  • Like Steve, I'm waiting to see what happens if he visits Michigan.

Also, I think Peppers will decide after his HS senior season which will coincide with the end of the 2013 college football regular season.

If Michigan has a strong regular season (10+ wins) and Stanford struggles (plausible) then we could get him.

I reiterate that my expectation for Michigan 2013 is the same expectation/standard Brady Hoke has: win the B1G Championship.

  • Also, we direly need Peppers to come for UTL this year. Nights like that are what's necessary to make moves on such a highly touted recruit.

  • I always wait until a kid has visited. You literally know nothing until that happens. A young man can read thjngs aboit a school and talk to tbe coaches, but does that really give someone a sense for how they will feel when the see the campus, facilities, dorms and academic buildings where they will spend their time?
Once they see things with their own eyes and interact with all tbe coaches in person, then their Iterviews can be dissected to guage interest.
So to me these are just for fun, and ill let you guys handle the guessing games

  • Peppers has OSU higher than us, last I heard.

As for Hand...I think there is real interest there, but we are still running second to VT.

I actually don't think it is that close. I think he prefers Stanford, but OSU is definitely running a strong second.

  • If we can land Da'Shawn Hand...I think it may help a little with Peppers. Also, like I've said before...winning takes care of everything.

Interesting timeline of Peppers top targets (all quotes were googled from public sources):

    Jabrill Peppers Tweet on 8/29/2012:

    “@jabrillpeppers: As of Now. 1. Stanford 2. USC 3. Michigan 4. Notre Dame 5. Ohio State 6. LSU 7. Miami 8. UF 9. Rutgers 10. UGA”

How 11 Warriors Quoted his Tweet on 8/29/2012:
“Jabrill has a top six of Stanford, USC, Ohio State, Michigan, Notre Dame and Florida. He plans to visit tOSU.”

    From 2/11/2013 (questionable source)

“I grew up a Michigan fan,” Peppers said. “I always liked the tradition from Mario Manningham to Mike Hart and all of those guys. The only thing that hurts Michigan at the moment is the coaching stability. I heard Coach Hoke has a lot of offers from the NFL on the table. I know I’m not going to go to a college because of a coach but if a head coach leaves they go into a whole new system and there is a new group of guys I would have to get used to and it just makes the process much more difficult.”

    From Rivals ~ 2/11/2013

"Stanford and Ohio State are battling for number one right now," he said. "Then comes Michigan followed by Notre Dame and Alabama. I'm ready to declare those schools as my top five."

Brian Dohn of Scout ~ 2/19/2013

Star Jabrill Peppers said he was all but committed to Stanford until Ohio State & Michigan started pushing hard

After PSU visit on 2/21/2013 he tweeted

@JabrillPeppers: Visit To PSU was Great! Might've cracked my top 5

    Summary and Conclusion:

Stanford has always led. He’s impressed by where the academics can take him. He’s been quoted as wanting to be a doctor. He’s said if the NFL doesn’t work out a Stanford degree will take care of his future.

USC dropped out because they sucked last year. (speculation)

Ohio moved up after the Hoke to NFL rumors. I think they drop out just like they did last year for a few recruits once they checked their facts. (speculation).

Ohio’s wild card is that their DB coach is an excellent recruiter and consistently pulls in top guys.

Pepper’s visited two schools so far and now PSU might get back in. LSU just offered as well. It all comes down to his visits.

    Oh and from another site:

"I have no interest in the Michigan State Spartans

    Uncle Newt

  • I don't think a visit does much for Peppers.

I do think spending a weekend with Mattison and Hoke may put Michigan in front in Hand's mind. However, it will be real difficult to ride that recruitment out til signing day in front with Bud Foster in Hand's backyard.

Puncher's chance on Peppers. "Anything can happen" territory.

1 in 3 chance for Hand, which is as good as I'd give any program.
