We shut ourselves out with three critical TOs in the 2ndfirst half. Without those TOs, we put up 21 on you in the first half using a backup QB. Your defense was a sieve all year. The dumbest decision Urbie made was letting Heacock go. Heacock was as huge part of Tressel's success. Fickell and Withers are JV level compared to Heacock.

That D came around at the end of the season. And wasnt tOSU missing a significant player on D that game?
As far as Withers and Fickel go, how about give them a season to get things together. Theyre all new to each other and that takes time. Injuries throughout the year didnt help either. Again, the D came together the last few games. And your team didnt pass the 50 the WHOLE 2nd half. What a terrible defense

You guys can give Fickell and Withers all the time you want. The longer they are in Columbus, the more time we have to close the talent gap that was created by the RR debacle. And sorry, but your defense was not much better at the end of last season than the beginning. We put up 21 points on you in the first half alone. In comparison, we only put up 6 against ND, 9 against UNL and 12 against Sparty in a full 60 minutes of play. If we didn't have two QB fumbles in the second half, we would have beaten you in the Shoe precisely because your defense stinks. We stopped our own offense in that game. Your defense had very little to do with it.

Mattison came in and took a defense ranked 110th nationally and turned it into the 17th-best defense in the country, despite the depleted roster. Even when the last of Lloyd Carr's recruits left in 2012 and Mattison was left with an even more depleted roster, pretty much only RR recruits, and our best CB suffered a season-ending injury, Mattison bumped up our D to 13th. At schools like OSU and UM, a good defensive coordinator can make a good D out of the pieces available, and can make an elite D when he gets all his pieces in.
Greg Mattison named "Recruiter of the Year"
