Grading Class 134: Defense

Yep. Not sure about the entire Elite 11, but there was a bunch of controversy over Shane Cockerille. He was one of Trent Dilfer's hand-picked invites, and many felt that he really didn't show up at all, and certainly not enough to earn a spot in the Elite 11.

Also, honestly, I don't think anyone believes Asiantii Woulard is the best QB in America.

Yeah but Trent Dilfer did win a Superbowl, which makes him better than Marino.

Agree. The TV edited Elite 11 I watched was pretty underwelming. Shane M appeared to have some accuracy issues but no one really stood out and Dilfer and his buddies were just flat irratating...it seemed mostly about them. Just my opinion. Shane M has all the tools and will be great if he develops them. My main concern with him is because DeLaSalle was a pretty bad HS football team he didn't have the opportunity to show much except in camps. That gives him an incomplete grade in my mind. Many of you guys are way better and spend a lot more time looking at film than me so my incomplete grade is pretty incomplete. Once he lines up with a real football team this summer we'll know a lot more.

Dual threat QB, originally committed to USF, bounced over to Clemson after Nkemdiche left. Won Elite 11 MVP. Kinda like a poor man's really raw version of RGIII.

Yeah, he could be good at Clemson, but not the best QB in America...please.

It seems like a lot of dual threats got undeserved boosts in the Elite 11 - call it the RGIII effect. Johnny Stanton was not nearly impressive enough to warrant an E11 spot. Dilfer and the others said a lot of the ranking was based on the classroom stuff, but c'mon - you can memorize every play in a playbook, but it doesn't matter if you can't execute on the field.

This isn't even taking into account his man love for Zack Greenlee, who according to observers was near the bottom of every group during the throwing sessions.

Guy's only offers were from Fresno St. and Miss. St. (very late) despite going to every camp imaginable.

Yup. They grade them on a curve, because 'they can do other things'. Whatever. I think dual threats are much more hit and miss.

  • The main thing is, is that we have all seen shane play extensively in real life, camps or game film. The kid has accuracy issues at times, but what kid is perfect coming iut if high school? Zero! He has all the tangibles as well as a pretty cerebral.
Im happy with our qb, and the kid has plenty of time to work on everything. It foesnt really matter that a bucknut thinks he js over rated, the guy has a clear agenda for thinking a certain way. Of course they think shane is over rated....the want to believe he is over rated
