Grading Class 134: Defense

Michigan put together another excellent defensive recruiting class in 2013. We grade them position by position and talk about it.

    Steve Lorenz

  • I have to imagine that some of the coaches' reticence to take another DE was due to the fact that, like you said, Poggi will be outside and eventually shift in, so there'll be enough DEs in the rotation for now, and 2014 looks to be such an elite DL class that we can afford to skimp a bit on the 2013 DEs.

  • Yeah I pretty much wrote the grade and then called myself an idiot for giving out that grade. Great work, huh? lol

  • Nice write up and I look forward to reading more of this site's content now that I am a member. I know this isn't a secret but I think Dymonte has a chance to be the next great DB at Michigan.

welcome I agree! Very special player and underrated because of how early he committed.

Like Ducks, I also agree. I'm really excited for Dymonte, and I'm so glad we get to see him in the Spring Game.

  • Steve - Ohio State troll here, is there a chance that McCray translates to a DE? I know that was a concern before the Buckeye's offered, I think they were hesitent to where his position might end up and seeing as Michigan really only took Taco as a DE might Michigan be looking at McCray growing into that?

If he does, it's not something he's discussed with the coaches at this point. I know it's something that's been talked about by analysts and fans quite a bit. You'd have to think if he puts on the weight that it's a possibility, especially with Ryan only being listed at 242 and McCray already somewhere around 230.

I wish I had a teacher like you when I was in HS and college, I would have done better looking at the way you pass out the A's! lol

    Right?

They filled up the majority of the class very early. To me that says they got the guys they wanted. The only targets they swung and missed on were five-star types like Cravens, Treadwell and Isaac. It's hard to get all those guys.

I guess on the outside you'd look at Stribling and see a three-star guy. I look at him and see somebody the coaches watched for three days straight and felt comfortable enough to give an offer to, even though at that point they were still in on guys like Leon McQuay.

You have to understand, it is an unwritten rule that Taco can score no higher than a "C" to us Bucknuts! lol

    I agree with this take.

They got kids that they offered early. Or that they got a chance to see up close and evaulate thoroughly.

Even the late offers (Hill, Dawson.. etc) are kids from schools that they have an established reationship with, and know all about.

I'd be hard pressed to look at a position on defense and give it less than an A or B+ as well.

Also about Hurst.... I had brought his quickness up to JC before, and he agreed that he's one of the most explosive inside guys in this class. He's gonna be a player.

  • Im going to disagree on the grades.

To me its like grading out a woman....I never realky give above a 9...there is always room for improvement.

De- grades out around a B- lime you said, one guy doesnt realky do it.
Tackle- was great A- neither are anywhere near ready to start but the upside is tremendous
Linebacker B- two guys , both rated pretty solidly.
Both have solid upside but both will need to put in
    some work before playing.
Db - B +outside of thomas , I dont see anyone ready to compete. And while I wasnt a fan of rich rod throwing bodies at problems, the bodies we have thrown in have ability and upside. This db class should help solidify the secondary for a few years.

This defensive class end up at a B. Im very happy with this class to say the least

Shouldn't As and A+s be reserved for when you do get those elite guys?

  • QB - A
    HB - A+
    WR - B-
    TE - B
    OL - A+
    DL - B+
    LB - B+
    DB - B+
    ST - A-

  • I guess it depends on the criteria that you're grading against. It looks as if Steve - almost called him Tremendous - graded coaches pursuant to who they targeted, aggressively pursued, and ultimately signed. For example, "the coaches are targeting a player type physically who need a certain level of skill development" in the cornerback commentary.

Some might view it from an overall talent perspective, which of course will result in different "grades" I presume.

  • Sure you can argue the grades here but the fact is, Michigan ended up with a top 5 class. Imagine the grades all the teams that finished behind us should get.

Why are you grading based off of who is going to contribute as a true Frosh? That doesn't make much sense to me.

We get 2 of our top targets at LB (Who both are top 5-6 at their position) and it's a B-?

Because its still on the light side.
Supers ready to contribute early and give to the team longer with more upside should be graded higher eh?
I mean, why dont we just give out A+'s across the board! If we add the top two linebackers to ferns that would be a whole lot better the....so should we make up a new category like A+++

How is is "on the light side"?

We didn't have a big need at LB, and got two top 6 prospects at their positions.

Who are the supers ready to come in and contribute? Nobody knows this.

Dorial Green-Beckham was rated higher than Amari Cooper by everybody on earth without the last name Cooper. Safe to say that Cooper contributed a hell of a lot more than DGB.

I would have the QB graded at B+ because we only took 1.

Just thinking that he is gonna need some polishing, from what I have heard and read doesnt have the best vision at this point, obv that comes in time but no way he overtakes Gardner. Not saying I would mind a Frosh QB playing against us in November though

How does this make him overrated? I wouldn't expect any true freshman QB coming in to overtake a 5 star 4th year QB who showed a lot of potential last year.
