Got a question for you guys.

  • What do you think about moving "The Game" into the prime time slot? We're talking about it on our board and since there are two sides to this, I figured I'd ask you guys.

  • Great idea won't ever happen unless its moved to earlier in the year imo.

The '06 game was a pretty great game. But, think about if it was prime time. Way more intensity in each stadium. It would be a recruiting dream every year. There isn't a game better than ours. Put it in prime time willy

Definitely should happen (and probably will at some point, because money always wins out in the end). And the idea that we can't do it in November is ridiculous. High schools have Friday night games in November all over the Midwest every year. The NFL does it. FCS schools have playoff games in the North in December. It's a red herring. Moving a game from 3:30 to 7:00 (or 7:30 or even 8:00) can be done easily without moving the game earlier in the season. We are talking about a few degrees in temperature at most by the end of the game. And 3:30 games in late November are already cold enough that fans have to bundle up. It's a silly argument.

I wish the B1G would get rid of the outdated, no night games in November rule.

Too many drunk idiots on both sides for prime time. I hate night games anyway. Hate waiting all day for the game.

  • Not the 8:00 pm slot, but I think anywhere from 4pm - 6pm would be a great start time....you guys gotta understand how hard these people are tailgating and that 8pm slot is a long time to hold on when you're that hammered

  • If anything is going to change with The Game, it needs to be moved to early or mid-season. It's going to be weird for everyone in the next several years playing back to back weeks. Better yet, put us in the same division.

It's not even technically a rule. It's sort of an unwritten historical reluctance that has, in fact, been brushed aside on occasion. Minnesota had a night game in November a few years back. It was an indoor game, but the fact that it happened takes off the table any conference level prohibition on such games as well as any suggestion that it has something to do with rowdy fans after a game or people driving home late at night. At least the B10 doesn't seem to have such concerns. So that basically leaves weather. Why is it that high school and NFL and FCS/D-2/D-3 teams all over the country can play outdoor night games in Nov & Dec but B10 schools can't? If it's not too cold to play games at 3:30, it's not too cold to play games at 7:00.

  • They will always be the last game of the year no matter what. And the Big 10 will not be dominated by 2 teams. NW is on the way up, Iowa will be back, Wisconsin will settle in on a coaching staff and be tough, Nebraska will always present a challenge, MSU might fall of a bit but not enough...not to be relevant in the conference, and Illinois will get better. The Big 10 has seen better days obviously, but they will be back. Don't be nieve and think that UM and OSU will duel it out every year. Just not going to happen.

The tailgating part is absolute BS, every other conference has plenty of night games and there's tailgating all day down here when TAMU has night games. Night games are just flat out better.

  • Love night games. Would love to see UM-OSU as a prime time game. Get the B10 to get rid of that dumb rule and let's play!

LOL, you tell us not to be nieve and think that UM and OSU will run the conference again, but you're just as nieve to think the the UM and OSU will always play the last game of the season. If they stay in seperate divisions the rivalry will lose some of it's "magic" (for lack of a better word) because you have to win you're division to get into the championship game, those will be most important. There'll be greater emphasis on MSU, Nebraska and Iowa down the road than on OSU. You can win all your division games, lose to OSU and be in the championship game.

The conference will eventaully figure out that it'll be "better" tv and draw more eyeballs if they're staging games at the end of the season that will determine the championship game participants. I can see the OSU game being moved to the mid-october/early november time frame, and then having either MSU or Nebraska being the closing game in the Legends division to determine who goes, and then games like OSU, Wisconsin, eventually again PSU being the finale for the Leaders division.

If you don't think the UM v. OSU game will lose something... talk to Nebraska about their OU rivalry and how well that went after being split in seperate divisions. Things change, don't be nieve to think they won't. I'm sure many people thought just because Nebraska was a founding member they'd always be in the Big 8/12. Or that there would always be a SWC. Or that Syracuse would always be in the Big East. Or that Boise St. would always be in the FCS, and then never be BCS buster, or then be in a BCS conference. Or that teams from California, Texas, and Idaho would be in a conference called the Big East.

To say the game will always be the last game is short sighted and nieve at its best. Or worst?

  • Back on topic though, I wouldn't mind a prime time game but I'm not sure I see it happening unless the game is moved. The conference as a whole is big on traditions and they've either lost or will be losing many in the future. The "no 8 o'clock outdoor nightgame" agreement is one thing that they are able to keep full control of really. They'll be able to do this until there is some presidents/ADs aren't able to be convinced not to play at the later time.

I may be wrong but don't both schools have to agree to play at a certain time, tv doesn't just "say" when they're playing? TV wants the game at 8, but both schools want either noon or 330, doesn't the network plan for that?

  • To me, the Michigan-Ohio State rivalry is one of the greatest events in all of sports. While I wouldn't hate to see it moved to primetime, I'd prefer to see it maintain as many traditional characteristics as possible and remain in the regular time slot. In a way, I think that makes it even cooler - a way of saying "this game doesn't even need to be in primetime to have a primetime atmosphere."

It's a moronic authoritarian rule. Whoever came up with the idea is an idiot.

    maizegoblue

  • If Michigan and OSU stay in a different division I think the game should be moved to Oct. or early Nov. The B1G should have the last game of the season be with in each division. Someday there will be two teams that will be guaranteed to play back to back games. The first game in this scenario would be virtually meaningless outside of bragging rights. If the last game of the season is for rivalries that is fine but it should be with in a schools division. Personally having Michigan and OSU in opposite divisions is just a good example of greed by the schools or the conference. It will eventually take away meaning from "The Game" and the rivalry.
As far as time of day. Outside of population control time of day should not matter. Sure it will be colder at night. It will also be less windy at night negating the temperature drop.

Putting "The Game" in prime time would be a huge recruiting boon for both tOSU and UM. Needs to happen. Think of all the recruits around the country that would watch that game. Kids west of the mississippi are still sleeping when The Game kicks off.

I think a lot of those kids go out of their way to wake up early and watch it. But the rivalry would definitely get even more exposure playing at night.
