Gardner Granted Redshirt

This is potentially the biggest news for Michigan's program since Mattison was hired. I say potentially in case Gardner leaves early. But I fully expect him to lead Michigan for a very successful 2 years.

Unless he has a Heisman campaign next year, I can't imagine him leaving early. I'm sure he wants to show that he can succeed in the mold of Kaepernick, and unless he's a projected high pick, I have to imagine he'd want another year of seasoning when the team around him will just be even better. We really don't graduate many superstars in the next two years (beyond Lewan) and all the current young guys will be going hard in 2014.

    Also... bananabananabananabananabananabananabananabanana

    HELL YES.

  • This is definitely a huge positive for the the program.

It gives both Morris and Speight an extra year to develop before either are pressed into action.

Gardner also will continue to develop as a QB, the sky is the limit for him with full time reps for 2+ years.

So many people forget how highly touted he was coming out of high school, and he looked amazing last year for having not taken meaningful QB snaps, well...ever. But also for the whole playing WR for 2 months thing. I'm incredibly excited to have our QB position solidified for the next two years. It would've been really dangerous to go into 2014 with our only options being Bellomy, RS FR Morris, and true frosh Speight. The extra year of development is invaluable.

  • Another huge boost for the program this offseason... First Lewan, the Green signing, now Gardner... Whats next??? McDowell, Harris and Hand all committing before the season starts????

  • Did you guys see his interview about the redshirt? He said Borges might be happy with him staying another year and having to deal with him. What's that about?

Haha no worries. Yeah, I've read some places that Gardner's got a pretty good sense of humor, so expect to see some more deadpan joking around and him messing with interviewers for THE NEXT TWO YEARS. banana

  • Man, I literally can't contain my excitement right now. We're getting a guy back that in his FIRST 5 games as a starter at QB accounted for 18 touchdowns (11 TDs with 5 picks in the air). He was B1G Offensive player of the week twice. This is definitely the story of the offseason so far along with Lewan coming back. I wonder if this gives the team a bit of a boost in spring ball knowing they'll have Devin for 2 more years unless he shows out this year.

I think it must. This is a win-win no matter what happens - either we get Devin for two more years, or he has a ridiculous season this year and goes pro. I think his potential is through the roof, and everyone around will benefit from it. I think we'll see the Devin-to-Devin connection a whole lot this season.

  • Very happy to have him leading this team... He seems to have grown up so much in these past 2 years... His physique alone shows how much he has grown and how much he wants to be the best on and off the field... Seems to have a great mindset for the position and is very intelligent... Cant wait to see him pass for 30 TDs and run for 10 more... He is going to be so explosive barring an injury.

  • Not worried about Shane, when we were a turnstile to the NFL for QBs those guys took their one year, ran with it and cashed in on Sundays

Honestly, I look at him and I see Texas-era Vince Young all over again. He's definitely got things to work on, but he's so athletic and has such amazing potential that the sky's the limit.

Picture USC when it churned out Palmer, Sanchez, and Leinart one right after another. That's what I want us to be again, starting with Gardner.

How much weight do you guys think he has put on, they still have listed just over 200lbs. Im guessing he is around 215-220? then to be at 6'4". That would be great for us and not so much for the rest of the BIG.

    I would imagine he's around 210-215 now.

  • I always, in my gut, thought this would be the last revenge of RichRod, and that Gardner wouldn't get the redshirt.

Oh well, alls well that ends well.

  • His lower body is still very slim but his has a really broad upper body... I would say 215lbs is about right... If he could add some mass to his legs, he could be 230lbs and out of ankle tackles like VY did... I think this offense is going to gain a lot of yards... No indecision on who the QB will be and he can focus on a single position... They HAVE to get Funchess more involved... He is too talented to only have 1 rec per game like he did this past year... I understand he was a frosh but he has to see at the very least 5 balls thrown to him every game

    DG Interview

He's well spoken and charismatic. Doesn't hurt that he has a great smile and appears confident in interviews.

Perhaps I'm a bit too optimistic but I think Devin Gardner will eventually be a top-15 pick if he develops well over the next 2 seasons.

AFAIK, no Michigan QB has passed for 3,000+ yards or thrown 30+ passing TDs in a single season.

Gardner could become the first to accomplish either feat. He might even accomplish both in the same season.

He is going to be what Ohio thought they had in TP, but with the character that comes with The University of Michigan. This is outstanding news!

I agree with you I think he could put up some serious numbers, and beat Ohio twice. His sixth year would be in the shoe, the meltdown on bucknutts is going to be fantastic.
