  • Know Harris wanted to hang with Gardner this weekend so this has to help with him.

  • Awesome news!!!

  • This is potentially the biggest news for Michigan's program since Mattison was hired. I say potentially in case Gardner leaves early. But I fully expect him to lead Michigan for a very successful 2 years.

  • Let this be a lesson to some. News will break without the need to ask for updates...can't express how relieved I am that I don't have to see another "any update on DG redshirt?" post.

MSU isn't a very good football program.. takes year of consistent winning to get to that level. - copemoney 1/22/13

  • This is awesome! Now Shane will definately be ready to play when they need him and even Speight will have a year of redshirt under his belt when he has to back him up. Unless of course Gardner goes to the NFL but I really dont think he will given the fact he took some time off from quarterback in college and didn't play much at all in games until half way last year

  • I realize how this sounds, and I don't mean this negatively in any way:

But do you guys see this as a completely positive thing if it means Shane Morris doesn't take over until his 3rd year? (As a RS Sophmore I'd assume). As an outsider, I see Morris as having more potential than Gardner, so in a different world I would want him starting as early as possible if I were a Michigan fan. Or do you guys prefer he has a couple of years to develop first? That's not to say that I think Gardner isn't good, I just think Morris has more upside.

Potential is different than being able to succeed right away. No way would I want Morris starting this year. He need work with accuracy and reads. Morris has tremendous upside with his arm strength and leadership, but he's far too unprepared and inconsistent to be a starting QB right now. I think most will repeat this sentiment.

  • I don't think Morris has more potential than Gardner. Gardner does most things better and is much more mobile.

  • Yep, my main concern w/ Shane was him coming in w/ too much hype & pressure and then getting forced into the starting job too soon. That can kill a QB. My favorite route for a QB is to learn behind a proven starter and get a grasp for the playbook & speed of the game, then come in on a mission (see Brady, Rodgers). Morris as a RS SO in 2015 sounds like the perfect time for his debut and will be the start of a fantastic career.

well if Morris is better then Gardner then he can start and Gardner can move to WR. It's a win win really.

How can it be a bad thing? If Morris was just the better QB next year he would win the starting job. I will take the 5th year senior QB coming back and a talented RS freshman QB hungry to take his job competing every single time.

I guess it's just the freshness of Morris vs. Gardner. Gardner was a 5-star QB, #1 dual threat his year (to some of the services). You obviously know Morris.

I would hope a RS senior with Gardner's recruiting bona fides would beat a RS freshman. Another thing to keep in mind is that Gardner really doesn't have a ton of starts. He will still likely (hopefully?) see a nice improvement over the next 9 months.

To put it in perspective, I think Braxton has something like three times the amount of starts as Gardner (albeit less practice time). I think Gardner still has plenty of room to grow.

I think a good way to answer that is to think of this: JT Barrett gets great reviews from the coaches during the fall. The entire fan base is hyped up on his potential and how good he could possibly be. Do you want Braxton Miller to go pro following this year so Barrett can start in 2014, or do you want 4 years of Miller followed by Barrett who has been learning from him for 2 years?

Very true. I think I just get over-excited for the new recruits to come in and get some playing time. You're right though, I want Braxton to get a full 4 years in before Barrett takes over. I think the reason that thought even crossed my mind is just because I see Morris as the PERFECT fit for the offense I think (based on my complete lack of knowledge as usual lol) the Michigan staff is moving towards. But obviously Gardner is a guy with experience and much more knowledge of the offense currently.

I was just curious if any Michigan fans had had the same thought that crossed my mind. Not so much for Morris's Freshman year (I'd already assumed Gardner would be the starting QB this year), but for his 2nd year. But yeah, that's just my over-eagerness when it comes to recruiting haha. I wanted to see Noah Spence before he was probably ready last year, and I'd like to see Derrick Green immediately this year. Not the most logical way of thinking I admit!

  • Perfect situation. Shane would benefit beyond words with a redshirt.

I think most of us would have been alright with Shane starting his sophomore year. I'm with you on the over-eagerness, though. You see these highlights and assume they'll come in year 1 and dominate on the field, when in reality you probably won't be hearing their names for at least 2.
