Gardner >>>> Denard

  • If we were running a RRod spread option offense I'd say Denard is way better, but Borges won't run that even with Denard in as starter.

For Borges' offense to work we need a vertical threat opponents have to gameplan for and at the moment Devin gives us that vertical threat which I just didn't see with Denard this year.

I think Gardner will have a bad game for sure at some point, OSU's D will be a test. But it would be tough for Denard too. We've struggled to get a passing game going with Denard, no matter how highly the D we faced is ranked, it just takes a set of eyes to realize Devin is a better passer. Devin's passing doesn't scream "NFL" at you but it's a factor, it just wasn't one with Denard. Throwing up 3-4 deep balls a half, closing your eyes and praying it's your guy who comes down with it just doesn't work as a passing game.

I'm an OSU fan, so I acknowledge that my opinion on this doesn't count haha.

That said, I've watched just about every Michigan game over the DRob years, and if I were a Michigan fan I'd like the way things are shaping up for the OSU game. I've always personally felt that DRob would be more effective in the position he's currently playing due to injury (versatile playmaker/x-factor--some plays at QB, some at RB, some at WR). Gardner strikes me as a better pure passer, so DRob playing all over the place and Gardner playing QB could be the best line-up Michigan has played with yet.

    wave welcome

I agree with all of this. Gardner as a QB and Denard as a RB/slot WR/whatever is a great lineup to have.

OK, this post just proves to me you want to have denards baby. Might be the worst post ever.

  • Has nothing to do with someone being biased in Denard's favor. The knee-jerk "Devin >> Denard" comments are equally hilarious.

Al Borges is obviously more comfortable calling pro-style plays from his playbook - and Devin clearly has more upside when calling those plays.

Denard clearly has more upside when running the spread. Michigan still struggles to run (the running game) pro-style plays, and interestingly enough it appears as if Devin's passing is setting up the run (where traditionally the reverse occurs). I'm willing to bet that most of that interior OL (and well, Lewan if he goes pro (pls don't go pls don't go)) will be gone next year, and the transition to pro-style offense will be nearing completion (personnel and experience and being able to open up the entire playbook). Will still be lacking experience, but most of the spread type OL will have moved on. Still have a few WRs left.

Yes, Denard can run pro-style, but not as well as Devin. Yes, Devin can run spread but not as well as Denard. That's it in a nutshell.

  • The good news is we'll have them both for next week.thumbsup

  • As a QB, I'd agree.

I watched a very minimal amount, but I saw some discussion about Michigan and how your team was running the offense. That's how I imagined it should have been the entire time - use Robinson as a weapon, but not a full-time QB. Gardner is showing well for himself.

    Nice win today, guys.

  • If by "past stats" you mean 11 wins and a BCS win, I am a little blinded... Denard had a lot to do with those wins and for that, he gets a pass in my book.

  • Thanks for the input PSU guys, agree with you for the most part. If Denard can throw next week I hope we see him at QB a little less than half the time. But I'll trust the coaches with whatever they do. Go blue!

If you want to think Denard was the sole reason Michigan won 11 games last year, be my guest. He was better in 2010 and they only won 7. You might want to give the defense some more credit rather than giving most of it to Denard.

Truth is, we don't beat OSU last year without Denard, considering out defense. No BCS either then.

lol He didn't say Denard was the sole reason for those 11 wins. You act like Denard had nothing to do with the team winning 11 games last year.

  • Ridiculous... isn't Denard closing in on the ALL-TIME YARDS MARK??

Now somebody w/ 3 games under their belt is >>>>>

Give me a break. I love how the offense looked today, you never knew what formation or offensive system they were ready to run. But it amazes me how quick people forget about the major player that lead our program on the current rise.

  • This will be my last post in this thread cause those loyal to either DG or DR are getting way too emotional over comparing apples to oranges. I completely agree with the OP BASED ON the offense we will be running next year. It is what's best for the team. Denards injury was a blessing in disguise, in that it has/is giving DG legitimate time at qb, its allowing time for all other offensive players to also adjust to the change which is enormous heading towards the offseason. IMO, running our O the way we did today, gives us the best chance to win both next week, and in whatever bowl game we end up in. DG the primary qb, DR still the star of the offense essentially. His presence alone absolutely commands the utmost respect every play no matter where he is lined up. Iowa still doesn't know what the hell hit them today. Damn it was fun to watch too. DG did something today that denard never has, account for 6 total tds in a game, and still, denard damn near ran the show. Brilliant playcalling BTW.

Lastly, we all want the same thing, that's a win every week. Lets not get too uptight when we don't agree on our own "internet coaching" tactics. That being said, sorry to moon for the "you want to have denards baby" comment I made. Its hard for sarcasm to be displayed through typewritten comments. Go Blue and lets kick the ish out of those guys next week!

You might want to give Denard some credit too though.

Antbody remember the Nick Sheridan era? Yea not counting Forcier that's where we were when Denard took over. They only won 7 games two years ago, but Denard literally won a lot of those single handedly. He's had some terrible games and nobody can deny that, but it's shocking to see how little respect and gratitude he receives after literally being the entire offense for the better part of the last 3 seasons.

What a previous poster (I believe it was Willy) said was right, it's possible to commend Gardner while not degrading Denard. And I don't believe the poster I quoted has done this I just think Denard deserves a little more appreciation.

HAHAHAHA WOW, no shot. Great player, but he's not that great of a passer or that great of a runner or play in the right offense to put up the stats week in and week out. He is a solid passer and a solid runner, but if you think he'll be up for the Heisman....I want what you're smoking.

Now i don't think Devin will be considered a Heisman contender to start the season next year but i think you are wrong in your post. With ND and Ohio State both being undefeated this year and both will be expected to be really good next year, that will give Devin a couple of high profile games to have Heisman moments in. We have thrown the ball quite a bit the past couple of weeks with Devin at QB and when you add up his TDs in 3 games it's quite impressive. If he throws for 20 TDs and runs for another 15 to 20, Michigan is a 1 loss or undefeated team, and Devin plays big against ND and Ohio State I could see him being in the Heisman talk.

Now we're putting DG on heisman watch after 3 good games against pitiful defensive teams? Where does it end? Let's see what he does in "the Shoe" then we'll talk a bit about it.

  • Devin has amassed 939yds and 13 TDs in three games. These may not be great defenses but they are of the standard we'll face more weeks than not in the B1G. I like the combination of Devin and Denard we used against Iowa, wouldn't mind seeing it again. Haven't seen this much passing at UM in awhile, it's fun to watch.

No that wasn't my point. I was disagreeing with your no shot comment. I think he is talented enough to have a shot at it. Like i said he won't be on the contender lists to start the season next year.
