G-Town loses to Nova, Miami loses at home to G-Tech

  • Wow. 5 and 6 fall tonight to unranked teams. Door is wide open to grab a #1 seed again.

  • I was actually expecting the GTown loss, but Miami?? Wow!

  • That is an absolute crusher. You cannot lose at home to an ACC bottom-feeder.

But it's ok to lose on the road to a big ten bottom feeder...
Remind me again, what do we win by being a number 1 seed? Is the banner cool?

  • Being a number 1 sets you up with better match ups than a number 2.... gotta be worth something, moral victories

Playing the 16th ranked team vs 15th.,or playing the 8/9th seed vs 7/10th? Appears the seedings bw 1 and 2 is splitting hairs. The tournament is more about how team a matches up to team b more than it is seedings. Moral victories? That's somewhere in Disneyland.

  • Lol, I never mentioned anything about losing to PSU. That was an absolute embarrassment.

Being a 1 seed means you have slightly better potential match ups down the line. That's all. Would you rather be a 1 or a 2?

I think it would also show how far this program has come from the depths of where they were.

I could care less about our seedings. It's about the teams you are matched up against. There are some good teams out there that will be higher seeds, being 1 or 2 doesn't prevent you from being placed in a death region, not to mention even if we get a 1 seed we would likely be the lowest ranked 1 seed and thus given the tougher region of teams.

But more importantly, come April fans won't applaud us being a 1 seed if we lose in the second round. But they will applaud us if we make it to the elite 8 or beyond regardless of seed. Winning shows how far we have gone as a program not meaningless seedings or rankings.

Being a 1 seed is usually a big advantage in the Sweet 16. Assuming chalk, you get to play a 4 seed instead of a 3 seed. In the current rankings, that's the difference between playing Louisville/Florida and Marquette/OSU. Not really a huge difference a lot of the times, but it is rare to see a 4 seed favored vs. a 1 seed. 2 vs. 3 is often a toss-up, and the 3 seed can often times be favored.

So is it really that big of an advantage of being a 1 seed and playing the 4 vs being the 2 seed and playing the 3? I could understand if the argument was being the 1 seed vs being a 4 or 5. But being a 1 seed vs being a 2, the advantage is minimal if not nothing. OSU/MSU can play with the likes of Florida, Georgetown, Syracuse, Louisville, ok state. Since there is little difference from that mix of teams, whether you are a 1 or 2 you will have a tough match up

I just looked up some trends for the seeds in the tourney. It appears the advantage the #1 seed has is in the first weekend of the tourney. #1 seeds have 0 losses to 16 seeds and have lost only 12 times in the second game to an 8 or 9 seed. The #2 seed has 4 losses in the first game and 33 in the second game. So according to these numbers a #1 seed has a very very good chance of making it to the Sweet 16 at least.

    Since tourney expansion to 64:

#1 seeds have made 43 (44.7%) appearances in the F4
#2 seeds have made 20 (20.8%) appearances in the F4.

#1 seeds have won 62.5% percent of championships, while 2 seeds have won 12.5%.

Some evidence about the success of 1 seeds vs 2 seeds.

To be fair, that could simply be a sign that #1 teams tend to be better than #2 teams on average rather than telling us something about the matchups.

So according to your logic we double our chances of being in the final four if we go from a 2 seed to 1 seed. In a hypothetical world, does the number 1 seeded mich squad beat the number 2 seeded UM squad? My point is we are the same team whether we are seeded 1 or 2. Being seeded at a certain spot does give a slightly better path to the chip but its marginal.

Those teams that were 1 seeds and won the chip were good teams, and your stats may say they were just better teams than the 2 seed hence why they won the chip. The biggest factors are whether your team is that good in the first place and the overall path of teams you have to face to the chip. You telling me that Kentucky squad from 2 yrs ago wouldn't win the chip if they were a 2 seed, or even 3?

  • I was in the middle of editing my last post when Pat said what I was going to say. If you could play a 4 seed, and it was someone like Marquette, and avoid a 3 seed like Louisville or Syracuse, I think that's a pretty moderate difference.

And if it gives you a better chance of getting to the championship, like you say, why not go for it? ANY chance, whether it be a 1 percent increase, is important, especially in the topsy-turvy nature of this season. I'm not saying it is the be all end all, and I won't be upset if they fall short of a #1 seed. But, at the end of the day, I think it would be beneficial to this program.

I agree with this. I would rather be a #2 paired with Gonzaga as a #1 than a #1 paired with Duke or Florida or Louisville as a #2.

Exactly. The best teams tend to get the #1 seeds so it should be no surprise that the #1 seeds perform the best in the tournament. If they didn't, sonething would be wrong with how they are picking the #1 seeds.

I love watching Marquette and they are tough in the tourney. Buzz is one of the best coaches in the business.

  • Yeah they are pretty good, I usually have them going a round or two farther than people think.

Okay, how about playing a 4 seed like Oklahoma State, vs a 3 seed like Florida?? That, to me, is a HUGE difference, and one that makes having a 1 seed important.

Huge difference is playing Florida vs playing Iowa st. There isn't that big of an advantage as you think in playing a 3 seed vs 4 seed. Again it's about how your team matches up against the other team. UM would struggle against teams that pound it inside and have a good on ball defender. Marquette would be a tougher match up in my eyes because their team mirror use in size, but they have tenacious defenders. the cuse plays a zone which would allow for more drive and kick for threes. , it's about matchups

Marquette is still a very good team - hence why they'll likely be a 4 seed - but they've also lost to Green Bay. From an overall resume, Louisville and Georgetown are more impressive than Marquette from a resume perspective. Can't really say the same about Cuse right now.
