I'm interested to hear your stories!

Five distinct memories built it up for me, in order:

    1) I remember as a kid sitting in the kitchen with my dad on a cold November Saturday watching Jim Harbaugh lead Michigan to beat Ohio State and realizing how exciting it was to watch.

    2) Watching Desmond Howard in the Notre Dame game in '91 and then buying a copy of the Sports Illustrated that had him on the cover and being obsessed with it.

    3) Watching Fab Five games in my parent's family room shooting baskets on a Nerf hoop left handed because I wanted to be like Jalen Rose.

    4) First game I ever went to in The Big House was the infamous Colorado game where Kordell Stewart threw the hail mary to Michael Westbrook. I was visiting my sister who was a student and was sitting in the student section. I knew something was different when I felt worse about the loss than a lot of the kids around me who actually went there. I always thought I wanted to go to Michigan, that made me realize how much.

    5) Being a student during the '97 championship run, going on the field after the OSU win, and going with a group of friends to the Rose Bowl that year.

  • I just always was. My dad and uncle were die hard Michigan fans and alums, so I was too. I don't think, even as a kid, I was ever just a casual Michigan fan.

  • Both of my parents, all four of my grandparents, 3 aunts and uncles, and both of my sisters all went to UM. I'm 21 and have been to every Michigan home game since 2005. I was basically raised in Ann Arbor and I only applied to one college (here), so I didn't really have a choice lol

That being said, there are several moments that really solidified my fanhood. I was born in Howard's Heisman campaign so didn't get to see that unfortunately. But the 1997 national championship year is a very clear memory. I was able to go to the OSU game and remember the tension during the Iowa game. These games made me know that I would always be a Michigan fan, but one game in particular made me know that I would eventually go to UM. The Henne to Manningham against PSU at the last second was the most incredible thing I had ever seen live (at the time). Walking out of the stadium with 110,000 people screaming "IT'S GREAT TO BE A MICHIGAN WOLVERINE" gave me chills. I knew right then and there that I wouldn't be happy anywhere else.

  • I had always been a Michigan fan because some of my family members were, but once I attended a game back in 2008 (Not the greatest year to start attending games) I was addicted to everything Michigan. Growing up I always wanted to go to Michigan, so if I get accepted this fall I will have a hard time turning them down.

  • It was an eventual realization of tradition, history, and relevancy being observed at a very young age. That, and living at my best friends house next door to me growing up who's whole family was big time Michigan fans. It just started off casually watching every Michigan game each Saturday. Then you realize its the nations winningest program, the largest football stadium in the nation, the awesome helmets and uniforms, the fact I live in the state of Michigan, the tradition of being one of the first football programs ever, the best fight song out there.....and it became an easy sell.

  • First memory is of Butch Woolfolk. Was around during Bo, during the transition to Mo. I wasn't necessarily of age, but I was on this earth biggrin .

Thoroughly enjoyed watching Jamie Morris. I recall watching that...that Penn State vs Michigan game when "the hit" occurred. Was watching it with my friend Carlos Brown live. It was one of the first few plays of the game I recall - and I remember Los jumping up and saying "THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT!" Never knew what happened until years later (the severity of the injury) but I was SO PUMPED by how they knocked each other out of the game.

I remember watching David Boston vs Charles Woodson; when Boston did get Woodson that one time and I *think* he turned around on his way into the end zone. Got flagged for taunting. Dude was HEEE YOUUUUUUGE. Yes, PED yes, but before I knew that was the case I was astounded by how big and fast he was.

I remember Michigan vs Washington when Washington had Steve Emtman (spelling), the DL. I certainly remember vs Washington State and Ryan Leaf. Also that year I recall arguing with people that there's no way Michigan should have split that championship with Nebraska; I used common opponents to validate my argument.

Most vivid memory? I won't get the year right, but it must have been 1991/1992. I was in college. Watching the game live on television. Versus Notre Dame. Do I need to say what happened? Not Desmond Howard (I saw that live; no way I thought he was catching that). Rocket Ismail. Kickoff return. Not one.

    Two. Touchdown.

Arguing with a coworker at Booz Allen who was Italian (ND fan). GREAT guy. Ended up having some really in-depth discussions regarding race and prejudice; I'm Jamaican and was astonished upon hearing that he too experienced prejudice in America.

Walter Cross coming out of Oxon Hill. I graduated from Bishop McNamara (Damian Prince); actually was classmates with Tyoka Jackson (Penn State alum; played DT for Packers and Bucs, resides in FL now I believe). If any of you ever see him, ask him about Mr. Homayouni (HO my YOU knee). He was our Indian math teacher who mispronounced everyone's names; he'd call Tyoka "Toyota" - and told him next time he'd call him "Nissan." At any rate, Mark Williams was in my class as well. There was a nice little recruiting battle between Michigan and tOSU for Mark Williams; he was All-Met - they called him "Ice." Big, fast. OLB, #51: http://www.lostlettermen.com/mark_williams-ohio_state-football-big_10-p192729/

I kept pushing him to go to Michigan of course. He was seriously considering it....but missed a phone call from Coach Carr. Coach Carr told him, quote, "if you were that interested in coming to Michigan, you'd have been home for that phone call". I was, as they say in Maryland, "blown" by that approach. He went to tOSU and I told him I was going to curse him by guaranteeing Michigan would NOT lose to tOSU from 1989 - 1992.

I can't remember, but I'm pretty damn sure they didn't lose to tOSU those four years lol.

The 1992 game was a tie in Columbus, but Michigan won the first three. So you were right!

  • My grandpa graduated from Michigan and started to take me to games back when I lived in Michigan. I moved to Indiana when I was 9 (which is why I attend IU) but I was already a huge Michigan fan. The funny thing is that my dad is an MSU grad. lol

  • It was 1988, Michigan was playing msu, and the winner was going to the rose bowl. My brother sky had an msu sweatshirt and he said, "come on Kyle cheer for state, green is your favorite color!" " I was like mmmm no, I kinda like this other team." The helmets , the uni's , everything about them I loved. That day was the first day I found football, and I've loved it ever since. Could it have been that I wanted to cheer against skip? Maybe... But it could have been a lot of things. The only thing I do know is that we all have had that moment, a moment of clarity, where it all makes sense. I knew then and there that Michigan was my first true love.

  • When I was 8 my neighbor took me to the national championship parade. Froze my ass off to!! He raised me to be a Michigan fan along with my dad(who eventually switched to OSU confused).

Nowadays I have convinced my girl to convert to Michigan even though her cousin played hoops at MSU thumbsup

Ha ha ...not likely. He is layed up in a hospital bed in florida after undergoing a major back surgery.
And yes he does troll the board on occassion. He gets fired up really quickly , but he is passionate about his team and his view points. In reality the dudes my best friend. So for the next few days be nice, he is in a lot of pain.

  • These stories have been great to read. I loved ducksworth post and I can really relate to awink. Each story is unique but we all do have that bond. It seems fairly ubiquitous in that no matter when or where you found the wolverines, that feeling encompassed all of us. That's why I love sharing my Passion with everyone on this board. Thanks Todd!

I agree - the newer posters stand out to me. It's easy for me and you to be fans because we got to see the glory of 1997 and the wonder years of Carr, but some of these guys have been following adamantly for only a few years (RR years and maybe the end of Carr). It's impressive to become a fan through those years lol

I've thought about that as well. When we had two losses, the world was collapsing around me. These new guys get some credit for an almost sisyphean type climb and fall that happened over the last few years. You kept thinking we were getting better, but reality would send you back to the bottom of the hill. Much love to the new guys!

  • I was actually an OSU fan growing up, we lived in Ohio until I was 13. We moved to Michigan, and I had divided loyalties.

But I then went to UM. My first game, very first one, was against Notre Dame with Desmond Howard catching the leaping dive into the endzone on 4th and 1 in 1991. I actually sat maybe 50 feet from the catch. That season, along with the Fab Five, cemented my love for Michigan. I still have a soft spot for OSU (don't hate me), but I am blue all the way through.

While I appreciate your candor in the the matter, I'm not sure your story follows that ubiquitous association of feeling the rest of us had lol. But a great story none the less....

That's a very interesting story. We've obviously all heard of players that "crossed over" - Marcus Ray, Desmond Howard, Craig Krenzel, Justin Boren (twice), etc. But I hadn't heard of many fans that have crossed over. In a way, that's even more impressive, because you had every reason to NOT be a Michigan fan, yet you became one anyway. I think that's pretty cool.
