This is not a Borges issue. This is a Hoke/tradition issue. Great defense and an alright offense. Harbaugh did alright with it though. Need a solid QB and good TE's. Right now we have a 3 game starter and a couple freshman.

I agree that Michigan has traditionally been known for great defenses complemented by good offenses.

However, Michigan needs to recognize the changing landscape of college football. Hiring a young, innovative up-and-comer who can adapt to his players will go a long way toward giving Michigan both.

We don't need to be flashy on offense. However, we need to have consistent, competent, reliable offenses.

I loved Harbaugh's TE-predicated offense at Stanford. It would've been even better if it would've had a bona fide stud at WR.

I disagree. Hoke's offenses at SDSU, for example, were power game but were not as vanilla as Borges.

Out you mean with the pro style QB that we don't have?

Borges was his OC at SD State..so that's not the right argument here.

The 6 Int's vs ND and The 3 second half turnovers in the OSU didn't help. I guess Big AL threw those bad passes and coughed up the ball.

There were 5 INTs vs ND. One of them was on a completely ludicrous HB pass by Vincent Smith. As for the other four, while Denard obviously gets blame for bad throws, his woes were exacerbated by Borges stubbornly sticking with ridiculous play-action passes that fooled precisely NO ONE. On at least two of those picks, Denard would be coming out of the play action with every receiver covered and a ND LB or DE who did not bite on the fake at all barreling into his face. That's a SURE recipe for disaster, yet Borges kept. on. doing. it. This is one of his big problems, he gets an idea like "Let's line up in the Ace and throw play-action" or "Let's run the ball up the gut on 3rd/4th and short" and then doesn't deviate from that idea even in the face of mountains of evidence that its not working and we have to do something else.

As for today, I'm willing to bet that Devin's last two turnovers don't happen if Denard is in the game and doing Denard things, either because Denard actually has the ball and is making things happen, or at least because Denard is in the game so the defense can't just pin their ears back and go after Devin.

Can you seriously defend what Borges did in the second half, like, at all? Where were the WR screens to Denard? Where was that awesome play from the Iowa game where Denard gets the pitch and then has an option to keep it or pitch it to another back? Where was that most basic of RichRod plays, where Denard fakes the run then nails a wide-open WR on a slant (seriously, that one's been gone for two years!!)? Why did we continue to try and run the ball up the gut out of the Ace, despite the mountains of evidence that our interior blocking sucks this year and cannot be remotely relied upon? Why were we throwing every. single. down. on the drive with 6 minutes left in the game? WHERE WAS DENARD?

His argument is that it was Borges fault we didn't win. This argument makes perfect sense. The production was there because we out gained ND, but had 6 turnovers. Explain how the argument doesn't apply instead of downvoting me for pointing out a flaw in his argument.

Don't complain about downvotes. That makes you a f-ing whiner. And people will downvote you even more in response.

Our players deserve criticism as well. However, let's not f-ing look past the part that Al's play calls put our players in tough situations which could not be salvaged.

A number of the turnovers that Denard had in the Notre Dame game was because of ND's pressure from the front 7. Borges could've used roll-outs, counters, traps, etc. to alleviate that. He didn't. Hence, Denard tried to do the best he could but ended up making mistakes.

I agree, nobody says we need to go with basketball scores. But the reality is that pretty much every guy under 45 who is an OC today is familiar with the spread and knows how to utilize it even if it's not his *sole* favorite system. The idea that we need some guy whose offensive ideas come from the 1980s is really bizarre, you can have good D and at least be modern on offense.

No. I can't defend what he did. I never said I was defending him. I only said that you all are overreacting. They played a hell of a game vs an undefeated OSU team at the shoe.

I can tell you have I have a lot better Michigan teams lose to lesser OSU teams at the shoe.

That's a valid point. Borges can't be blamed for every loss. I don't believe he's responsible for every loss we had. Against ND, it was on Denard. Against Bama, it was on coaches and players. Against Nebraska, it's debatable who the blame should go to. But against osu, his 2nd half play calling was absolutely atrocious. Those 3 3rd/4th and short play calls in the 3rd quarter cannot be ignored.

I can't argue with you. This post makes perfect sense. I still say coaches have costs teams games in the past and it's not the end of the world. To call for the guys head is overreacting.

  • Very pathetic offensive showing. 2nd and one Denard up the middle, wtf? Gardner should have stayed in and played and we would have had a td in the third. Borgess should be gone. He sucks

Im not calling for his head because of this game, im doing it because of a consistent lack of understanding of how go adjust to the defense and a propensity to make stupid calls over the last two seasons.

    Great.

What explains the running backs running that direction too?

Frankly, if they were going to rush the QB the way they did in the second half, why not a screen pass away from Denard?

Of course Denard would try to take the heat off his coach, but don't kid yourself, you had no chance on that play whatsoever.

  • Maybe i shojld go tjrough and read other posts in this tbread but im not.

No reasonable person on earth would go.away from everything that worked in the first half.
That firsr third down ay should have gone to denard. That was the first bad call. Then it just went down hill. Deveinbwas so poised, he made his short passes look effortless in the first half. In the second, no rollouts, no short passes, no screens, NOTHiNG.
What in the heck was he thinking? Oh, run it up the middle with smith? Go censored yourself borgess. Im not over reacting when you literally handed the game away.

This is Michigan, there will always be good coaches willing to coach here. I am sure there are better OC's than Borges that could be brought here.

  • Lining Denard up in a modified wildcat when we've been stretching the field with downfield passes worked great in the first half. Lining up the same play on 3rd-and-short is borderline lunacy. Doing it multiple times is the definition of insanity.

I am rarely this frustrated at the offensive playcalling, but seriously - even if it doesn't work the first couple times, just line up the same play and run a goddamn play action with Gardner.

  • After this game (and season), I believe there are much better Offensive Coordinators out there than Borges. But with this staff, they will not let him go. That is not their mentality... and they will give him a few more seasons to still prove himself. What's frustrating is that we will have to go through this, season after season knowing that even when we do have great offensive players (from our great recruiting), it won't mean we will win the game because the guy calling the plays can be a total _____.
