Florida really screwed that one up. They didn't make a shot for the last 8 minutes. I agree, they're overrated. Losing to NIT bound Kentucky.. lol

Not NIT bound anymore as long as they win their first game in the SEC tourney.

I agree that Florida is overrated, but this is as impressive a win there's been in the ncaa this season. Kentucky's chance for the dance was entirely reliant on this outcome.

Just win and Michigan is a #1 seed. I see no way possible we would not be a 1 seed if we win a share of regular season and the conference tourney titles.

    Uh wut?

If Florida is (grossly) overrated, then how is beating Florida at home one of the most "impressive" wins of the 2013 season?

I can understand beating the Gators in Gainesville where the Gators play really well. But this Florida team has lost to a number of mediocre SEC teams on the road...

You must have not read my post.

I never used the word grossly. I think they were overrated in the top-5, but are still a legitimate top-10/15 team. Kentucky, on the other hand, was losing games left and right. If they wanted to make the tournament this year, beating Florida (a top-10ish team) was necessary. And they pulled it off.

I'm not comparing them to a Penn State over Michigan type upset. Penn State was not playing for anything important. Kentucky essentially had their entire season on the line against a clearly superior team. In that sense, it was extremely impressive IMO.

  • I read and understood your post just fine. I parenthetically added "grossly" to indicate my opinion.

I responded to your post because your reasoning is suspect.

Florida has 6 losses this year - all on the road.

In fact, over the past 6 weeks (so since the start of February) Florida has played 5 conference road games and lost 4 of them. And none of those teams are locks to get into the NCAAT.

Moreover, Billy Donovan has not won at Rupp Arena since Calipari became Head Coach of Kentucky basketball. In other words, a loss at Rupp arena was not only possible but actually expected. Hence, Kentucky's much needed win over a struggling Florida team is actually not that impressive.

Lastly, Kentucky's win over a struggling Florida team doesn't guarantee the Wildcats a tournament spot. They are currently on the cusp. Kentucky probably needs to win at least one tournament game.

  • Ultimately, this Michigan has no one to blame but itself for not winning the B1G regular season title.

I can understand Wisky hitting a ridiculously lucky 3 to force overtime. But the epic collapse to a winless Penn State team is indefensible.

But to choke away a lead at the line in the final minute at home to f-ing Indiana is equally inexcusable. I understand that if the refs had made the right call then Michigan is celebrating a second straight B1G regular season title.

Overcoming bad (non)calls is part of the game.

I can only hope that this Michigan team will redeem itself in the NCAAT.

The call was iffy and you know at home you maybe expect a bit of home cooking but it wasn't so obvious and bad a call that you can really create "what if" scenarios around it without coming off as a sore loser. There's worse calls in the NBA every day and people just move on.

  • I can't wait to get to the NCAATourney. The refs that ref the big ten are just terrible and incompetent for all the Big Ten teams.

I downvoted your post because it's clear to me that you don't understand what is considered an intentional foul.

Pushing a player that is airborne or about to be airborne is considered an intentional foul. Similarly, grabbing a player's jersey to keep him from getting away is considered an intentional foul.

Watford took a swipe at the ball and then pushed Robinson when Robinson went airborne. That's an intentional foul.

I participate on a lot of sports board. And pretty much everyone agreed that it was a clear cut case of an intentional foul.

The refs simply didn't have the balls to call it because it would've essentially sealed the game for Michigan.

However, I'm not dwelling on the missed call. This Michigan team had a chance to win this game at the FT line. Hence, I put the blame on our leaders - Burke and Hardaway - for missing the front end of 1-and-1s.

In short, you'll have to excuse me for dismissing the line that suggests I'm being a sore loser.

Our guys had a chance to ice this game. We didn't. That's on us.

Our guys had a chance to ice this game. We didn't. That's on us.

Just the other day, Celtics-Pacers, a Pacers player blocked Kevin Garnett late in the game, cleanest block you'll ever see, but he was called for a foul. Why? Because it's the Celtics, because it's Garnett. That play wasn't really noted by anyone, even though it was a momentum changer in the game, because that sort of wrong call happens too often in the NBA for anyone to lose sleep over it.

The call in our game today was probably less obviously "wrong" than that one in all honesty, it's within the range of wrong calls that you get half a dozen in any game. I've been watching basketball long enough to know how reluctant refs are to call for fouls that lead to free throws *and* possession just in general because of the considerable effect those have on the game, and that sort of thing is magnified twenty fold in a last minute situation in a big game. And in fact, in this very scenario with a guy clean through to score being fouled from the back by a guy hustling very rarely leads to an intentional foul call. I've seen guys practically elbowed in the gut without it being called. What I am saying is that this was technically a bad call, but it wasn't in my mind big enough a blown call to warrant making it part of the narrative especially given that we blew the opportunity to ice the game ourselves anyway.

    UMSkeletor

  • I don't care what happens in the NBA. Horrible, head-scratching (non)calls are part of the pros. Hence, fans frequently accuse refs of showing favoritism to large market teams or privileging superstars.

    ---

That call exists to protect the offensive player. When a player goes airborne, he has a trajectory. If a defender alters or disrupts that trajectory, then the offensive player loses balance, lands awkwardly, and sometimes suffers an injury.

What Watford did is a textbook example of an intentional foul. I know that refs are reluctant to call it and that needs to be changed. If a severe foul was committed, it should be called regardless of the circumstances.

And again, I put the blame on our leaders and not the refs. However, in my mind it was a big missed call. If I was Coach Beilein, I would send that clip to the B1G offices for review.

  • I didn't want to start a new thread over this, But say Trey Burke decides to head for the draft after this year, who is taking over PG next year? Spike Albericht or Derrick Waton? Really how good is Walton? Is he good enough to start freshman year? I barely know anything about basketball haha. But what would you experts say?

Too many questions I realize. Lol
