Meh, let it go. If it makes him happy to pout over one or two losses rather than be excited over how the rest of the season has gone, let him.

The importance of games tends to grow toward the end of the year. I'm not going to say that the PSU loss or the loss at MSU will define the season because there still is time for redemption, but it's a simple reality that a game in late February is more relevant to the overall picture than a game in November.

Well then Duke, UF, Miami, Syracuse and MSU are all SOL because they've all lost multiple games recently.

Shhh, you're being too optimistic. That's only allowed regarding our football team.

It's not just whether you lose, it's also how you lose. I take it that getting humiliated, destroyed, abused at Breslin is just a bit of a snag for you, I consider that sort of game vs. our most hated rivals in basketball to be a fairly notable thing. Penn State is the worst team in a major conference this year and we lost to them putting Michigan sports, again, on all the talk shows for all the wrong reasons.

I'm not saying other teams haven't had discouraging results, obviously some teams have lost some ground recently - but the teams you mention there haven't had losses as embarrassing as us at PSU or as humiliating as us at MSU.

But even if you grant equivalence, you'd still have Michigan in a group of teams that has been on the wrong track heading into the decisive stage of the season.

  • Geez, I have never seen you post one positive thing about Michigan basketball. You keep trying to harsh my mellow.

Absolutely. Losing to MSU at the Breslin was a snag. It doesn't make or break our season any more than Duke getting pummeled in Miami or Ohio State getting run off the court in Wisconsin does. Hell, Butler just lost to unranked VCU by around 30 and I don't see them calling for the head of their HC. But if that's what you want to do, enjoy. We only get one life to live and you are free to live it by sulking if that's what works best for you. As for me, I'm enjoying the season. It's the best we've had in 20 years and one of the best we've had in our more than 100 year history. To me, that's something to be happy about.

Not much of a recent history of success to go on in terms of justifying optimism.

    (1) I haven't actually called for Beilein's head. I think his style of coaching isn't always helpful for this group of kids, but I'm not living in a fantasy land where Beilein's job security is even in the discussion.

    (2) Those losses were bad for those teams, but they also weren't in massive rivalry games and weren't as important in terms of what they meant for the losing programs involved.

    (3) Michigan basketball is a tiny part of what I think about every day, but if I'm going to comment on it, I'm going to give an honest reflection of my appraisal of the team and not a sanitised, feel good version of it. Maybe I should lower the standards but then please save me all the hype to begin with. If there's one thing I hate it's the hype at the start followed by the rationalizing and justifying when things go wrong. If you aim high, you gotta deal with the failure part of it and can't just explain it away with "half full" rhetoric.

lol You've been a member of this forum for 18 months. Are you really telling me nothing good has happened for Michigan basketball in 18 months?

I realize you said "recent", but I haven't seen you say anything good about UM basketball in any of your posts on this site.

    (1) Well, at least you're somewhat sane.

    (2) What does this mean? Would it have somehow been worse for OSU if they had gotten run off the court by us instead of Wisky and Illinois? Or if Duke had been pummeled by UNC instead of Miami? I doubt it. KU was "humiliated" (your word, not mine) by TCU and I find it hard to believe it would have gone over much worse if the opponent had been KSU or UT. We lost a game badly on the road to a very good team. It happens. And if we turn around and beat Sparty tomorrow, even if by a single point in 3OT, the first game will be forgotten. It will not significantly impact the program for any extended amount of time.

    (3) This convo didn't start by me hyping UM. It started by you taking a swipe at UM by saying we would lose to KSU if we played them again. That would be the same KSU we beat easily by double digits the first around and the same KSU team that needed an out of bounds play buzzer beater heave from beyond the arc to squeak out a win over a not very good Baylor (17-12, 8-8) tonight. Maybe you actually believe we couldn't beat KSU again, idk, but please don't suggest it has anything to do with me hyping UM. Take responsibility for your own comments.

  • I don't know how many here watched #5 Miami at #3 Duke but that was a great game. I mention that game for a very specific reason: Ryan Kelly.

Many around the nation questioned if ESPN and some of the other "experts" were needlessly hyping up Kelly. I think he vindicated the talking heads with his performance tonight.

So what does that have to do with Michigan? Simple. Mark Donnal.

Donnal is a stretch 4 (like Ryan Kelly). And for Beilein's 4out/1in system to work to perfection, we need a PF that can essentially play 3 positions - SF, PF, and C.

Evan Smotrycz was supposed to be that player for us but he transferred. And contrary to popular belief, he was a decent player but he wasn't really an adept post player. In other words, Smotrycz was really a SF in a PF's body.

On the other hand, I think that Donnal not only has the body but also the mentality to be that versatile player that can transition seamlessly between a PF in a 3out/2in scheme and a PF in a 4out/in.

I hope Hardaway Jr. and Robinson III return for next season. If they return, we'll have a team full of versatile players.

Hatch is a stretch 4 (like Ryan Kelly). And for Beilein's 4out/1in system to work to perfection, we need a PF that can essentially play 3 positions - SF, PF, and C.

Do you mean Mark Donnal? I believe Hatch is a 6'6 wing. Not a stretch 4.

For anyone who wants to talk hoops, Georgetown is struggling with Rutgers on ESPNU. And Lunardi has Georgetown as his next #1 seed following Miami's loss.

I saw that Lunardi dropped Miami after their loss. I don't understand how you penalize them for losing on the road by 3 to one of the best teams in one of the toughest venues. I'd call that a wash.

I totally mixed up Hatch with Donnal. Embarrassing. I'll fix that right now.

  • I realize some emotions have been running strong after the recent losses and I apologize for getting into it with some of the posters here. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions and I respect that. And we are all UM fans. We shouldn't be taking our frustrations out on each other. After all, that's why we have Sparty!

  • Agreed Mr. Woodson, we all vent about losses in different manners, some more positively and with a more optomistic outlook than others. It's just extremely frustrating and embarrassing when Michigan is all over the mothership & every radio show about such an avoidable loss. No one will remember or care next year but if PSU finishes 1-17 in conference.... WTF.

On a brighter note: how great are the Red Wings playing right now?!?! Knock on wood!

Edit: I obviously jinxed them. Geez.

lol Well in that case it was an excellent post and I agree with your thoughts on Donnal and the stretch 4 position. Can't wait to see Donnal play next year in Coach B's offense.

  • Bball fun fact, courtesy ESPN:

"Michigan scored 44 of its 58 points in the paint Sunday, the highest percentage (75.9 percent) of points scored in the paint by a Big Six conference team in any game in the last two seasons. The Wolverines' 44 points in the paint Sunday are tied for their most in a game over the last two seasons. It is also the most paint points Michigan State has allowed in a game during that span."

  • I think the team positively surprised me in some ways today. I never thought we'd win this or any other game really going 0 for 12 from three, I never thought we'd hold MSU under 60. The team showed life and bite, so that deserves applause.

At the same time some of the same old issues raised their heads as well, I am still waiting for a complete effort and the moment where it makes "click" and it all comes together. Let's hope it comes in the tournament.

  • Clearly a nice win. Fun to watch.
