The importance of games tends to grow toward the end of the year. I'm not going to say that the PSU loss or the loss at MSU will define the season because there still is time for redemption, but it's a simple reality that a game in late February is more relevant to the overall picture than a game in November.

It's not just whether you lose, it's also how you lose. I take it that getting humiliated, destroyed, abused at Breslin is just a bit of a snag for you, I consider that sort of game vs. our most hated rivals in basketball to be a fairly notable thing. Penn State is the worst team in a major conference this year and we lost to them putting Michigan sports, again, on all the talk shows for all the wrong reasons.
I'm not saying other teams haven't had discouraging results, obviously some teams have lost some ground recently - but the teams you mention there haven't had losses as embarrassing as us at PSU or as humiliating as us at MSU.
But even if you grant equivalence, you'd still have Michigan in a group of teams that has been on the wrong track heading into the decisive stage of the season.

Absolutely. Losing to MSU at the Breslin was a snag. It doesn't make or break our season any more than Duke getting pummeled in Miami or Ohio State getting run off the court in Wisconsin does. Hell, Butler just lost to unranked VCU by around 30 and I don't see them calling for the head of their HC. But if that's what you want to do, enjoy. We only get one life to live and you are free to live it by sulking if that's what works best for you. As for me, I'm enjoying the season. It's the best we've had in 20 years and one of the best we've had in our more than 100 year history. To me, that's something to be happy about.

(1) I haven't actually called for Beilein's head. I think his style of coaching isn't always helpful for this group of kids, but I'm not living in a fantasy land where Beilein's job security is even in the discussion.
(2) Those losses were bad for those teams, but they also weren't in massive rivalry games and weren't as important in terms of what they meant for the losing programs involved.
(3) Michigan basketball is a tiny part of what I think about every day, but if I'm going to comment on it, I'm going to give an honest reflection of my appraisal of the team and not a sanitised, feel good version of it. Maybe I should lower the standards but then please save me all the hype to begin with. If there's one thing I hate it's the hype at the start followed by the rationalizing and justifying when things go wrong. If you aim high, you gotta deal with the failure part of it and can't just explain it away with "half full" rhetoric.

I don't know how many here watched #5 Miami at #3 Duke but that was a great game. I mention that game for a very specific reason: Ryan Kelly.
Many around the nation questioned if ESPN and some of the other "experts" were needlessly hyping up Kelly. I think he vindicated the talking heads with his performance tonight.
So what does that have to do with Michigan? Simple. Austin Hatch.
Hatch is a stretch 4 (like Ryan Kelly). And for Beilein's 4out/1in system to work to perfection, we need a PF that can essentially play 3 positions - SF, PF, and C.
Evan Smotrycz was supposed to be that player for us but he transferred. And contrary to popular belief, he was a decent player but he wasn't really an adept post player. In other words, Smotrycz was really a SF in a PF's body.
On the other hand, I think that Hatch not only has the body but also the mentality to be that versatile player that can transition seamlessly between a PF in a 3out/2in scheme and a PF in a 4out/in.
I hope Hardaway Jr. and Robinson III return for next season. If they return, we'll have a team full of versatile players.

Bball fun fact, courtesy ESPN:
"Michigan scored 44 of its 58 points in the paint Sunday, the highest percentage (75.9 percent) of points scored in the paint by a Big Six conference team in any game in the last two seasons. The Wolverines' 44 points in the paint Sunday are tied for their most in a game over the last two seasons. It is also the most paint points Michigan State has allowed in a game during that span."
