Not new thread worthy, so I'll drop it here for the other hoops fans. I watched some of the OSU-Purdue game last night and here are my thoughts on some key things for our game Sunday:

    - How long will Trey Burke sit on the bench during the game? Aaron Craft is an extremely good defender and going from Burke -> Albrecht is going to make it look like things are going in slow motion for him. Spike has been better than I anticipated this season, but I think he'd get abused being defended by Craft, especially if they put a press on and he has to bring the ball up under pressure. - Who is going to guard Deshaun Thomas? Seems like GRIII would be the likely candidate, but would Mitch be able to harass him a bit more because of his length and energy? - How will Michigan handle a physical team? OSU looked to play defense like we haven't seen much this season, bumping, reaching, pushing, etc. How will our shooters and ball handlers react? - Will Morgan/McGary be a focal point of the offense? Amir Williams looked soft to me, so if the shooters are struggling to find room with the defense, will they run some set plays inside to try to force doubles?

I'd imagine GRIII will be guarding Thomas - and if it does it will tell us a lot about GRIII and Beilien's coaching. GRIII certainly has the body to be a great defender, but he needs to put in the work. If he can effectively guard Thomas, that will be huge for the team and also huge for his draft stock.

I totally agree, and believe he will be able to guard him effectively. This is definitely a match-up NBA scouts are looking forward to watching.

  • What if we do what we've been doing all season? Let our 4 guards penetrate and create....find open teammates and simply dominate the opposition.

  • Don't follow UM basketball that much, but I hope they destroy OSU this weekend. Also, looks like Meyer will have a decent amount of football recruits there including Damon Webb.

If that was our bracket, we would make the final four easy. Cuse would be the only tough game. I'm not worried about a rematch with NCState and I think Cuse will beat Florida.

Gotta get through the Big Ten season and all that first, but I would love that bracket.

Does the # 1 seed always get the closest venue to their campus for the first two rounds?

Yes, the higher ranked team usually gets the better venue geographically. Ex. If UM is ranked #1 and Indiana is ranked #2 and Indianapolis is a regional venue UM would most likely get the nod for that site as they are higher ranked. This kind of thing has happened quite a bit with ACC teams over the years.

  • Just got home and starting to rewatch game on my DVR. Didn't look great tonight but if all our "letdown" games are 15 point wins then I won't mind.

  • Duke's PF Ryan Kelly has aggravated a previous injury. He is expected to miss at least 2 weeks but could miss as many as 6 weeks.

That's gonna hurt Duke pretty bad. I'm not sure what their depth is like at the 4, but either way .. Kelly can play.

Hopefully NC State shows up to ball Saturday and they beat Duke.

  • It's pretty irrelevant for us. We aren't playing Duke and this is basketball so being the only undefeated team means nothing. It's extremely unlikely either them or us will finish the season unbeaten.

The upcoming games, @OSU and @Minnesota will be the first legit tests in a hostile road environment and those games will show us what this team is made of.

I agree. These next two games are going to be tough. Ohio State might not be as good as they've been the last few years, but they are very good at home. Since 2008, they've lost 7 home games total:

    - 2008: West Virginia, #7 MSU, #16 Illinois
    - 2009: #4 Purdue
    - 2010: none
    - 2011: #12 MSU, #15 Wisconsin
    - 2012: #9 Kansas

So if we exclude this season since it's just underway, that's 5 home Big Ten losses in 4 years.

Not irrelevant at all for Michigan. While Michigan doesn't play Duke and being undefeated ultimately isn't going to happen, a win for NCST over the #1 team in the country helps our resume since we have played them and won.

It's still pretty irrelevant, I mean it matters, yes, in the sense that it may have a tiny effect on the team down the road. But that applies to a lot of things that we probably aren't going to discuss or worry about too much.sitting here. We played 12 Division I teams out of conference, are you telling me you keep track of all their results and injuries and those of their opponents?

Let's be real here, and this gets to what I meant, it's a very, very peripheral concern. There's no point in some sort of dick-waving contest with Duke on who the no.1 team in the country is. The reality is that if we win the Big Ten conference we will be a #1 seed. That's the task at hand and it's gonna be far from easy. Duke? Let's worry about Ohio State and Minnesota, then Illinois, then Indiana, then Wisconsin, then MSU,

I don't have to keep track of Michigan's opponents as MGoBlog does a weekly write up called "Opponent Watch." I couldn't care less about being number 1 or Duke in general, but if we are going to root for someone we might as well root for a former opponent to beat Duke. It has nothing to do with being #1 or being the last standing undefeated team, but everything to do with Michigan's RPI.

I agree that the focus should be on the Big Ten conference play at this point, but if we don't win the conference then those top 50 RPI wins do nothing but help Michigan secure as high a seed in the tournament as possible.

  • I am knocking on wood this very moment, but MSU had a lackluster win over Iowa this evening. I am anxious to play them and blast the crap out of them! They have hardly looked impressive.

East Lansing will be a tough win, but the Ann Arbor game could be a blowout the way they're playing. That being said, I have no doubt Izzo will turn it around soon and have them motivated for the Michigan games.
