FINALS!!!!!! Monday @ 9:20 ET

Watching the game today all I could think was that Trey Burke is good enough to lead this team to a national championship. If him and Timmy play like they did today Michigan can beat any team in the nation.

Agree. Burke played like this most of last year, but Hardaway is a different player. He's mentally tougher and he has more confidence and makes better decisions. Very fun to watch.

I think we need a 3rd player to become a consistent contributor (i.e. 12+ points per game). It could be Glen Robinson IIi or Nick Stauskas.

I remember reading once that a team which has at least 3-4 double digit scorers has a much better chance of reaching the Final Four because defenses cannot key in on just 1 or 2 players.

Moreover, we can't expect Burke and Hardaway to both score 25+ points in a game. If we can get 60+ points from 4 player (so an average of 15+ points from per player) per game, then we become lethal.

Also, we are guard-heavy right now. I would like to see Morgan consistently averaging 8 and 8. If McGary also gives 5 and 5, then we should be golden.

The key is to make sure that the the team can compensate for a bad shooting night from one or two players.

I agree with what you are saying and we have 4 scorers in double figures with Burke, Hardaway, Stauskas and Robinson. We have had games this year where each one of those guys didn't shoot well and won. Stauskas did not shoot or play particularly well tonight and still hit double figures.

My point was more that Burke and Hardaway could very easily play this well for a couple games in the tourney and bring home a National Championship. I can't see this team not getting a 1 or 2 seed for the tourney this year which means our first couple of games will be against teams we are considerably more talented than.

  • Is this the first time Michigan has received #1 votes in 20 years? The Fab Five in '92 is the last team I can remember that got votes....

We also need to key in on defense. We have scored around 80 points per game, and just an average defense will make us very hard to beat.

  • New to the site so I'm chiming in after a good sample of games obviously. Love this team! Think Beifeldt may get some run now that Horford went down, atleast against some teams with size. When Horford comes back I think we will settle in with a nine man rotation for bigten play. Bench is obviously Horford, Levert, Spike and McGary. Spike has exceeded my expectations so far and if Nik hits a wall, hopefully Matt can use his senior leadership to help the team as well. Tough stretch in February but this team can handle it. Sky is the limit for this team. Key in on our defense as season goes on and we will be tough to beat in March and April IMO.

Agreed on all points. I'm loving Spike so far, Bielien has a tremendous eye for talent and I have full faith In whoever he wants to add to this team.

As for the season, I cannot wait until @OSU. That will be our first game against a team that has really good D, so I'm looking forward to our high-powered O vs their dominating D.

  • The offense has seemed kind of stagnant for stretches at a time but then again that was pretty much what the offense was all game long last season. Luckily like last year we'll always have instant offense because Burke can basically get to the rim at will and he's gotten so much better from last season.

I hope Stauskas remains within himself and doesn't try to force things like he was in the WVU game. He had such a great start (and frankly is still having it despite the one bad game) because he just played his game and hit the open threes. I don't mind the tech from the other night as its good for him to have a little swagger but when things start falling apart and you're not having a good game, you've gotta have composure and not try to force things. Just something that comes with experience and maturity, just see Tim Hardaway Jr for example.

Hopefully we can use these next few games to fine tune some things and be at another level for when B1G play starts. You can never predict the NCAA tournament, but I do think the sky is the limit for this squad. All the elements are there.

Just my opinion...I feel like Stauskas lost his swagger after the tech. I don't feel he was forcing it so much as it was him trying to diversify his game by going to the rack. What I don't want him to do is to lost sight of his midrange game off of pump fakes and such. I feel lime WVU was getting away with a lot of grabbing and slapping all game. Stauskas and Spike had a little trouble with that because of lack of strength at this point. Stauskas has been getting mauled all season. Beilein will have to control his emotions though. Unbelievable talent on this team. I'm looking for the bigs to step up and for the freshman to improve on d as the season unfolds.

Felt like Arkansas had some decent defense and WVU was getting away with over aggressive play. I am looking forward to Ohio as well. I don't think they will have the horses to keep up with us IMO. Bigten race is gonna be tight. Love being competitive and the analysts talking our conference up all the time. It's a pleasant change of pace from football where all you hear is SEC talk.

I disagree. I didn't think he was forcing anything against WVU. He missed 4 or 5 three-pointers, 3 or 4 of which were wide open. He was human for a day and the shots didn't land. It happens.

  • Hey guys, I don't really pay attention to high school basketball but I'll be watching some games here: http://www.iolaniclassic.hawaiihoops.com/ the next week or so and there are some good teams. Dunno if there are any Michigan targets or anything. It's an annual thing and guys like Rondo, Durant, Cousins, and others have come before.

That's the thing he didn't force it with his shot at all. Unless he's taking a lot of really terrible shots I don't think he could force it that way because that's exactly what the strongest part of his game is. I think he's capable of putting it on the floor and attacking the rim or utilizing the mid range game as Jordan said. But after the tech I just feel that he wasn't letting the game come to him and trying to force too many things out there as evidenced by 6 turnovers. Most likely, it's just 1 bad game under some big lights for a freshman.

  • If Michigan consistently played defense as well as the Kansas Jayhawks do, we would be near locks for the Final Four.

According to Ken Pom, Michigan's adjusted defensive efficiency is 88.8 which is ranked 21th in the country. Compare that to Michigan's adjusted offensive efficiency at 118.4 which is ranked 5th in the country.

I'm hoping that our defense will improve considerably by the NCAA Tournament.

Ohio is trying to run their Offense through Craft and I knew when this season began that it would not work.

  • To Ohio's credit, both out of conference losses have been to top-10 teams from storied programs.

    - Duke is deservedly the #1 team in the nation and plays very good (bordering on great) defense. The Blue Devils are led by 3 seniors (including NPoY frontrunner Mason Plumlee) and two talented underclassmen.

    - Kansas is currently ranked #9 and will be ranked as high as #6 starting next week. This Kansas team had to replace PG Tyshawn Taylor and PG Thomas Robinson from last year's runner-up team but they have 4 seniors in the starting 5. Their offense is a work in progress but they play great defense.

Hence, it's no surprise that Ohio shot 23-68 (33%) at Duke and shot 20-65 (30%) at home against Kansas.

However, Michigan will have to improve its perimeter ball pressure considerably if we're going to force Ohio to shoot below 35%. On the flip side, we cannot allow Craft/Scott/Thompson/Smith to bother our guards and chase them off the perimeter.

  • After watching Kansas vs OSU....UM will play a lot of zone against OSU and make them hit from the perimeter. OSU missed so many wide open shots that it was sickening. I was pulling for the Big 10 in this game. OSU has a size advantage against us....if we can negate offensive rebounding for OSU then UM wins by 8+. Unlike Kansas, UM has multiple guys to handle the ball and Craft can only guard one of them which will be Burke. And 21st in the country in defense efficiency isn't all that bad. It's well above average. As long as we keep OSU off the boards I don't think they have the horses on the perimeter to beat us. It seems like a lot of their players have trouble shooting with a man in their face and have long releases. From what I've seen this year, UM has done a good job of at least contesting shots. I think UM will play a lot of 2-3 or 1-3-1 zone....prolly packing it in more than usual. And anyone that says Craft is better than Burke is an absolutely delusional. Craft is nothing but a defensive player, he's not even that great of a distributor or shooter. I wouldn't be surprised to see a box and 1 on D. Thomas some of the game. He seems like the only player that we can't match up with. Should be a good game tho.
