FINALS!!!!!! Monday @ 9:20 ET

  • I'm not normally a huge basketball fan but games that involve us dunking and stuff all over the other team I could get used to.

  • I can't wait until Horford is back to full strength and can contribute a lot. I think that'll make a huge difference and take this team to the next level.

    Yup.

I really really like what I saw tonight but I just wish we had more offensive balance. If McGary can consistently give us 6-8 points (particularly hustle plays) on top of 10+ points from Morgan, we should be a great team.

If Morgan, Horford, and McGary start combining for 22+ points, then we should be a Championship-caliber team.

ETA: Just realized that I used the wrong names. Shame on me.

  • This team is scary good considering this is November. IU is legit. FWIW Iowa also is a team to keep an eye on. But so far, IMO, Michigan deserves its top 5 ranking.

Plus the additional offensive boost Jordan Morgan has provided. He has a much softer touch around the rim and seems to have found a comfort zone with the jumper near the free throw line/elbow area.

  • Just got back from game, saw Gardner and Funchess there together. Went to shake their hand but the girlfriend pulled me back cuz she thought I was a creep.

Again I think GRIII is a stud, Burke is the best PG in the BIG.Mcgary needs alot of work but he is only a frosh.

My concern so far is how slow we are starting.

Right now the bigs aren't getting a ton of minutes. The slippery rock game Morgan, McGary, Horford, Bielfeldt and Mclimans combined for 48 mins and 22 points. They combined for 48 minutes in this game as well for 14 points. Robinson is getting most of his minutes at the 4 spot right now.

  • Some ridiculous 3 point shootings stats through 2 games.

Hardaway and GRIII shooting 100% Combined 8 for 8
    Stauskas 66.7% 4 for 6
    Burke 50% 6 for 12
    Vogrich 40% 2 for 5
    Spike 33% 1 for 3

That's a combined 21 for 34. Man at some point we are going to have a ridiculously bad shooting night.

  • One item of interest for the next game when we play Pitt on the 21st at MSG is a noteworthy name on the Panthers' roster. Trey Zeigler is a Central Michigan transfer on the team this year (and eligible immediately) who is playing about 17 minutes a game so far. He was the #2 player in the state of Michigan in 2009, behind Ray MaCallum, and Beilein was pushing hard to get him before he ultimately chose to go to Central where his dad was the head coach. His dad got fired last year, Trey transferred to Pitt and was ruled immediately eligible, and now faces off against Michigan next week. When things started to look questionable for Zeigler, Beilein went out and offered a kid from Palmetto HS in Florida named Tim Hardaway Jr. who quickly accepted the scholarship and committed. The rumors were that Zeigler didn't want to be "The Guy" at Michigan trying to carry them through the Big Ten whereas Tim Jr loved the challenge. Should be a fun sub-story for the game.

Also of note is for his career, Zeigler has been an ATROCIOUS shooter, especially given he played against some very soft competition at the bottom of the MAC. Last year at CMU he shot 29% from 3point land (only 11-38, so he knew he wasn't a threat and didn't take a lot), 46% from the field, and 49.5%(96-for-195?!?!?!) from the foul line. How a 6-5 shooting guard could survive not shooting 3's and not making foul shots is beyond me.

  • According to Chris Balas, Michigan is likely to land Keita Bates-Diop for the 2014 class. Would be a huge get for Coach B.

Didn't he just say like a week ago that we were unlikely to get Keita and he was likely headed to Illinois? Would be a HUGE get for 2014.

  • I got the sense that Bruce Pearl was really buying into our team while announcing the past two games, because who wouldn't. Here's an article written by him further discussing his thoughts on our squad:

    Good article by Pearl.

He pretty much outlined why many think Michigan's rise to national relevance (if not prominence) is nearly complete.

That, plus scoring 80+ points a game, plus alley-oops and dunks, plus national media talking about how impressive Michigan has been, has to be a nice help in recruiting right now. Bates-Diop has to see GRIII starting and realize he's going to be in the NBA by the time Keita steps on campus, leaving a lot of playing time on a team that's on the rise and on TV all the time. Very noticeable change in the Hoops program since Beilein brought in the new assistants, they've been huge for the program.
