  • Nah looks about right. Should be a great season. We have a brutal 4 or 5 game stretch in the middle part of conference season.

Should be a fantastic year for UM basketball. We were recently ranked #5 in the country by the USA Today preseason poll. With Trey Burke and THJ returning, our backcourt looks to be one of the best in the country. I'm anxiously awaiting to see the incoming freshman in action, too. They will be key if we want to win the B1G this year.

The lineup will most likely look like this:

    PG: Trey Burke
    SG: Tim Hardaway Jr
    SF: Glenn Robinson III
    PF: Jordan Morgan
    C: Mitch Mcgary

    6th man: Nik Stauskas/Matt Vogrich

    Key bench players:
    Nik Stauskas, SG
    Matt Vogrich, SG
    Jon Horford, C
    Max Bielfeldt, SF
    Spike Albrecht, PG

    Am I forgetting anybody?

    hoopsgobluehoops

Nope that's pretty much it for contributors this year. I think you'll see us go about 8 deep on average with Stauskas, Horford and Vogrich. Biefeldt will see time when the bigs are in foul trouble.

My question is if Beilein decides not to go with the 2 bigs starting lineup who gets the nod? Obviously it's between Vogrich and Stauskas. Vogrich can be solid when he's hitting from 3 which he didn't do much of last year but I don't think he's worthy of starting. Really don't know just how good Stauskas could be yet but I trust Beileins recruiting. If you remember Trey Burke was only ranked around 85 by ESPN and a 3 star by everyone else. And GR3 was committed way before his jump in the rankings.

I'm very excited for this team just wish we had a little more depth. But then again we've done very well with much less than we have this year.

  • There's been a lot of talk about the team having a lot of faith in Spike Albrecht as the backup PG. Not sure if its fluff or not, but if he can manage the game effectively for 6-10 minutes a night that will be a huge help. That's one thing that still worries me - getting Burke some rest without killing the team - and it'll come down to Albrecht and Stauskas.

    UMPat

  • Basketball season is around the corner.

I have a lot of faith in Stauskas. There is something intangibly special about his game.

And for the first time in over 15 years, we have quality (albeit inexperienced) depth at every position.

Don't forget about Caris Levert. I know he is super thin right now but the kid has game. If Vogrich struggles shooting the ball again Levert could take his minutes.

That's exactly why I didn't add him, I think he will redshirt because of that so he can add some strength. I love Levert's game too.

I'm not so sure he is going to redshirt. I think he could provide a nice little scoring punch off the bench.

  • We're gonna win so hard.

Levert's not gonna RS IMO. I saw Novak had some tweet saying that he's a great player.

Also not sure we need a season thread, we'll have game threads and a bunch of other threads on the season as it goes on. Just like football.

He can ball. I don't know how good he's going to be, but I can tell you that he will be our best shooter. couple recruiting analysts has him as one of the best shooters in the country.

Nik Stauskas - Best shooter in the country...

Somebody challenged Nik to hit 100 threes in 5 minutes. Appearently its some sort of record. Nik hit 95 threes in 5 minutes and a total of 123 out of 141 attempts in 6 minutes 26 seconds. His shot percentage was 87.2%. At one point hitting 38 in a row.

I HATED Smotrycz. I think we're better off without him. His "3 pt ability" only appeared against no name teams and he was always either A) in foul trouble or B) turning the ball over.

His turnovers were pretty frustrating sometimes. He always wanted to take off whenever he got a rebound instead of getting it to Trey. But the kid was money from 3 when he got a clean look. And he played big down low when we needed it. I definitely wish he was still here but we'll be fine without him too.

  • You could tell Smotz wasn't happy and at times didn't put any real effort when he was on the court. He is a good player but would much rather have someone who gives 100% every time they're on the court.

Completely agree. I just don't think he fit in last year. And to gobigblue21, he was money when wide open. He got those looks before the Big Ten season started, but they disappeared when playing against better competition. I think our big men this year will be fine. From what I've read, McGary should be a dependable rebounder and solid contributor on offense, at worst. Jordan Morgan has never been, and will never be, an offensive threat, but he's a big body who can get boards. I'm excited to see Horford after all of the rave reviews of him in the off-season.

Actually I stand corrected. I forgot how he really gave up on some games down the stretch when he didn't get as much playing time. And his shooting suffered as well. Still would have liked him around if his head was right though. But this year we have at least 3 true competent post players, something Beilein has never had here.

Video is nice and all but it's easy to hit shots in practice when no one is guarding you, lets see if he can be lights out in the games goblue

I saw some other video of him. He was on Canada's U18 team (or something like that), and they had an exhibition against Baylor.

    His stats were:
    2 pt fg: 6 for 10
    3 pt fg: 4 for 8
    FT: 3 for 4
    Rebs: 7
    Steals: 2

Keep in mind Baylor is one of the elite programs in CBB nowadays. Stauskas can definitely ball.

I know it's practice, but you still have to make the shot. the kid has a good shooting stroke, very consistent. just cause it's practice doesn't mean it's easy. the kid is draining it from 28 ft. It shows that when he has a open shot during the game most likely it's going in. 27 for 32 from 28 ft is not easy, you don't see nba players hitting that much shots in a 3 pt contest. I watched couple highlights of him in games and he can dribble up the court and hits threes. he creates his own shots, he's the real deal when it comes to shooting. you're gonna love him, trust me.
