Elite Eight’ Leadership Committee ?

  • Looks like Urban Meyer is back to his bad habits again.Urban Meyer is putting together a circle of trust at Ohio State. “I’m going to build a leadership committee of people that I trust,” Meyer said.

“They’re those freaks we’re talking about. They’re different. Not necessarily the fastest guys on the team, or the strongest, but they are going to be the most committed guys in our program. We want our entire team to watch exactly how we treat the elite.

This is man who needs to go back to college to take a leadership class. Unfortunately Ohio is the closest campus. Maybe he can commute to OHIO or Miami of Ohio or Dennison or Ball State or anywhere else but CBUS.

  • Nothing really motivates guys who aren't as committed to the team as others like watching teammates get better treatment.

This has gotta backfire on at least 75% of his players as they think they are committed enough, yet they don't get elite status with Meyer.

Commitment should be an expectation, not something you get a cookie for. As a coach, this seams laughable to me.

I'm reasonable enough to admit that Urban Meyer is a highly effective coach, but this just seems lie a poor way to model and encourage behavior.

  • Keep in mind that when Meyer says the most committed he means the most talented. He's trying to cover it up, but the truth is that kickers and backup defensive ends weren't ever in his "circle of trust". First round talents like Percy Harvin and Tim Tebow were.

When I was in high school our all-conference halfback received special treatment from the head coach and everyone took notice, and by no means in a positive way. It didn't end well for Meyer at Florida and it won't end well at OSU. It's only a matter of time before he has another "health issue".

  • Did you even read the article? One of the members of his committee at Florida was a walk-on long snapper. headslap

  • According to Urban Meyer, the long snapper was a part of the circle of trust.

In order to believe that, we must believe that he took commitment to be the quality he was looking for. To believe that, we must believe that perpetually petulant Percy Harvin was exceptionally committed, even while he was sulking and fighting on the sidelines with coaches.

  • Anytime you split your team up into seperate groups is a dangerous thing... as a youth instructor, I make sure everything is uniform across the board so I do not divide the kids. It may work w/ his Leadership Committee because players would feel more comfortable voicing their true feelings to fellow teammates rather than a coach, but it's a slippery slope.

This is all it is. A VERY slippery slope. Now I don't doubt that coaches play favorites, but to outwardly create a group of your favorites....
