Our defense has played lights out since the AF game ...

UM Total DefenseAlabama 431 yds AF 417 yds UMass 259 yds ND 239 yds Purdue 213 yds Illinois 134 yds MSU 304 yds

UM Rushing DefenseAlabama 232 yds AF 290 yds UMass 112 yds ND 94 yds Purdue 56 yds Illinois 105 yds MSU 112 yds

UM Scoring DefenseAlabama 41 pts AF 25 pts UMass 13 pts ND 13 pts Purdue 13 pts Illinois 0 pts MSU 10 pts

I'd be willing to bet if the Alabama game happened this week Michigan would keep them under 30 points... i'm thinking in the 24 range.

Our defensive unit is so overlooked it's not even funny... since Air Force have we given up more than 13 points to anyone?

they are quite underrated because of the 1st 2 games. Seems like not very many people have noticed the major improvements they've mad since then. Oh well, they will find out!

Idk. Alabama's offense is near unstoppable with that OL. They have barely had to open up the playbook against anyone. And if you commit eight guys to stopping the run they are perfectly capable of throwing over your head. Maybe we would have kept them under 30, but that also would depend on our offense. You can't repeatedly turn the ball over and go three and out on offense against a team like Bama and expect your defense to hold up for 60 minutes. I am very interested in seeing them play #11 Miss St and #6 LSU over the next two weekends. I think they are going to steamroll both.

agreed, I don't think anyone in the sec can give them much of a game.

  • Has anyone heard if Burkhead is expected to play?

I haven't heard, but I'm not sure it matters because he's nowhere close to 100%. He seems to have a serious ankle injury that won't get better until after the season when he can stay off it entirely for a month or two. They will probably keep him off it all this week and have him "available" for Saturday, but the first time he carries the ball he will tweak it again. That's basically what happened to him this weekend against NW.

If he is, which I doubt/hope not, he won't make it out of the first quarter. Coaches need to bench him for his own good.

Yeah, TBH, Michigan's rushing D is pretty stout, and Burkhead won't be doing himself any favors getting stuffed by the likes of Jake Ryan. Speaking as a Michigan fan though, I'd much rather see a banged-up Burkhead getting the ball than Ameer Abdullah.

  • I think at the end of the day it will come down to whether Denard can avoid mistakes and do his thing and whether we let Martinez do his thing. I think Nebraska's D isn't very good, against teams with a pulse they seem to give up high 20s at least in points.

With regards to Martinez, I don't think our pass D is as good as the numbers seem to imply, we haven't really played a pass-heavy competent offense as of now. Notre Dame, MSU and Bama are the three teams we played that count as competent and all of them aren't exactly airing it out. The key is for our pass rush to keep Martinez off-balance and force him into mistakes.

It would just be hurting Burkhead AND the team at this point if we played. As stated before, Ameer is no longer flying under the radar. The kid is a flat out baller. I also hope to see Heards carries go up. He may be flying way under the radar. It has been said of the group of RB's we have, he is the most natural.

Just like Hoke saying all the players just have "boo boos" even though they end up missing multiple weeks. This will be Pelini's statement all week just to not give anything away to the coaches. I don't see why they'd want to play Burkhead though, he's a liability until he can get fully healthy.

Exactly. Abdullah is better than a banged-up Burkhead. I'd love it if Nebraska ran Burkhead out there, but there's no reason for them to do so until he can actually play pain-free.

I think this comes strictly down to the turnover battle. This will be the best, and most balanced offense Michigan's talented defense will face all year. Whoever comes out on the plus side of takeaways, wins the game.

    I don't agree.

I think we would still allow 30+ points.

However, I think our offense would be better and that we would be able to score 3 maybe even 4 TDs because of the emergence of Devin Funchess and Drew Dileo to complement the maturation of Devin Gardner.

  • Also, as a Michigan fan, I would be rooting for Rex Burkhead to play. He doesn't seem fully able to recover from the sprained ACL. Even if he does feel good, the other leg will be compensating for the injury, and he won't be 100%. For his personal health's sake, I hope he sits out until he's really completely healed up.

Nebraska's defense is hurting on the line badly. So bad that DE Cam Meredith was moved inside to the DT spot. This isn't a major issue, as there are a couple talented, albeit inconsistent DE's behind him. However, linebacker, and former Houston-Area DPOY RFr. David Santos had a very active game at LB. If Nebraska wants to stop Dennard, the LB crew will have to be on top of their game. Look for PJ Smith to cheat up in the box to help with run support.

He's frustrated many a defensive player in his time at Nebraska. Time and time again you see him make something out of nothing with only sheer determination. If he's 100% healthy, I want him starting, but I'm just not sure we're going to see that this weekend.

He was the exact same way in high school, never thought he was the most athletic but he out worked everyone.

Michigan is the #10 defense in the country, even after playing two top-10 teams.

    Defenses Nebraska has played:

    Wisconsin #18
    Arkansas State #52
    Ohio St. #63
    UCLA #69
    Northwestern #70
    Southern Miss. #92
    Idaho State (FCS).

Not only has Nebraska not faced a defense as good as ours, they've only faced one that's even remotely close.
