Early Look @ Nebraska

  • Rex Burkhead is banged up, but Martinez has been throwing the ball unbelievable well to his standards. Their defense is still suspect at times, so I think UM's offense will put up some points in this game. With Martinez, Abdullah, and maybe Burkhead...UM's defense will be challenged in this game. I think it will be a lot like last year and UM will try and take away the run game. From what I've seen this year, UM has done a great job of not giving up big plays and I don't know if Martinez can consistently be you with short accurate throws. If UM sticks to the formula of pounding the ball and playing defense, I think we win that one in Lincoln. Ball control will be key. This will be a hard fought win but I can't see UM scoring less than 28 in this game. Winning this game will all but shore up our visit to Indy. goblue

  • I think we have the talent/coaching advantage, but their crowd with a night atmosphere will be insane. Lincoln is a very tough place to play and Martinez is playing his best football yet.

It'll be a very tough battle, as they'll want redemption from last year.

They have the intangible advantage, but we have the onfield advantage IMO. 31-24 UM

  • They are far too careless with the football. If they turn the ball over like they have been this one gets ugly, but if they can eliminate the to's then it will come down to the end with the final score being in the 30s.

  • This game is huge! Michigan wins next week they are pretty much a lock to get to the Big 10 championship.

  • I don't think Nebraska puts up over 21 points on the board. IMO 38-20 big blue rolls

  • If the offense shows up I can't see Nebraska keeping up... our D is too steady, and I can't imagine Nebraska scoring more than 3 TD's. Michigan 34 Nebraska 20.

  • Wouldn't buy into the notion that Martinez has turned things around after one game. He was terrible against the Ohio defense and played against a bad Northwestern defense coming off of a bye-week. People were saying similar things following his week-one performance against Southern Miss. The primary concern is us playing on the road following the emotional win over MSU.

    UMFB

  • Rex Burkhead being banged up doesn't really help us, Ameer Abdullah has looked excellent this year.

  • It would be nice to see Jake Ryan with a couple of forced fumbles this game. goblue

  • IMHO I don't see Nebraska's offense as that much of a threat. We'll make them one dimensional and Martinez will not beat us throwing the ball. As for NU's defense... they'll get gashed

  • Abdullah has impressed me a lot. I remember watching him earlier this year, and saying to my son "that dude runs like a raped ape." He laughed.

MSU isn't a very good football program.. takes year of consistent winning to get to that level. - copemoney 1/22/13

  • Nebraska is, to put it bluntly, a stupid football team. Very undisciplined and sloppy. Penalties, turnovers, just boneheaded mistakes, game after game.

This will come down to Denard protecting the ball on the road in a night game in a hostile atmosphere. If he limits his own mistakes, Michigan should win comfortably.

I'd say this is spot on.

You look at our two losses, UCLA and Ohio State, and one thing is clear: The Huskers hurt themselves far more than anything our opponent did.

Consider the Ohio State game. Nebraska turned the ball over four times, including three interceptions.

You guys have any questions for Huskers?

As far as I'm concerned -- It's a good matchup on paper. Just a matter of what Nebraska team shows up on Saturday night.

  • I think:

N pass offense vs UM pass defense - Advantage: push, maybe slight UM advantage.
N run offense vs UM run defense - Advantage: UM

UM pass offense vs N pass defense - Advantage: push
UM run offense vs N run defense - Advantage: UM

    1. whats your honest prediction?
    2. do you feel good about your defense against denard? prediction on denards stats?
    3. what position is your weakness on defense?
    4. what do you think nebraska's game plan on offense is going to be against UM?

Disclaimer: The following will come off homer-ish, but it's legitimate curiosity. At least two posters here can attest to me being a decent poster. I'm not here to flame. That said...

I'm interested to know. With a decent separation in Marintez and Robinson's stats, I think it's fair to say Martinez is having a better year passing. When you give UM the slight edge, is that more a testament of what you think of Martinez as a passer or your defense's ability in pass defense?

    Robinson:
    83/155 -- 1,264 Yards -- 53.5% -- 9TD -- 9INT

    Martinez:
    124/185 -- 1,615 Yards -- 67% -- 15TD -- 4INT

I would say that it has more to do with our ability to stop the pass.

This. I know going into the MSU game we had the 3rd ranked passing D in the nation.

I don't know what stats you're looking at but I see that those stats show Denard is clearly better. Duh.

But our passing d was #3 in the country before last week. We're pretty strong in the back 7.

Don't forget that six of Denard's 9 INTs came against Bama and ND. I'm sure his numbers would be much more impressive if he had been playing against cupcake type, FCS teams.

    1. I see a Nebraska win. I'm happy to accept the label as a homer. But I genuinely believe that we'll come out on top, so long as we can limit our turnovers. At home, we're a slightly more disciplined team. Granted -- That's not saying much. I'll go Nebraska, 35-31.

    2. No, I don't feel good about our defense against Denard. In the same way Martinez was our offense against NW, I suspect DR will do the same against us. The only difference being that I expect DR to do the majority of his damage on the ground, rather than through the air.

    Prediction: 13/25 -- 165 Yards -- 2TD -- 2INT, 18 Rushes -- 185 Yards -- 2TD

    3. Defensive Line. Depth was such an issue this past weekend that our noted DE, Cam Meredith, moved inside to DT for the bulk of the game. Seriously scares me how thin we were this past weekend.

    4. I can't answer this yet. I'll have to check out one of Michigan's past games. I would've loved to have seen the UM/MSU game, but I don't get BTN. Damn shame that rivalry was relegated to BTN broadcast.

  • I must say -- I had no idea the passing defense was that stout. Is it more man or zone? Nebraska is big on the short and intermediate routes. Man to man would be the best way to stuff our outside receivers, but creates serious mismatch issues with our tight ends.
