  • What was Meyer's policy in the 2012 cycle when Dunn was considering visiting Michigan?

    The writer is an idiot, these kids can visit as many schools as they want. Don't commit until you are sure.

    The policy worked well for USCw. And one more note, the more drama in recruiting the better for ESPN when reporting it.

    Yeah, I saw this last night. What a load of crap. There are over 120 FBS programs and every one handles recruiting a little differently than the others. Some programs, like Michigan and Oregon and Texas, have gotten tired of prospects abusing the process by claiming to be committed to a school when they really aren't. They are simply asking that anyone who commits to their school actually mean it and take that commitment seriously.

    We waited until the very end of the process this year for Derrick Green. And we re-recruited both David Dawson and Gareon Conley after they opened up their commitments late in the process. Michigan is not forcing anyone to commit before they are ready or before they have a chance to visit other schools. And Michigan has shown flexibility in dealing with prospects who make a sincere commitment but who have second thoughts or feel the need to reopen that commitment so long as it is not done in a sneaky or underhanded way. But we're not a restaurant or a hotel that is in the business of taking and holding reservations. We are not going to allow high school kids to casually make commitments just to hold their spots at UM while they are still going through their process of making a decision.

    Take your visits. Think everything through carefully. Make a decision. Commit. Michigan isn't the right fit for everyone and prospects who don't want to take the idea of a commitment seriously are free to go somewhere else. They have more than enough other choices ... and so do we.

  • The best is when people try to say Hoke is a hypocrite for taking kids like R Dawson and Samuelson.

    Like it's his job to worry about the Nebraska or Illinois programs.

    I laugh everytime i see someone say that. They obviously think Hoke gets upset at the other school for trying to flip Michigan commits which is untrue.

    Not only that, but the implication is that UM should turn such kids away just to be "consistent". Really? Turning Dawson and Samuelson away and preventing them from coming to UM when that's where they prefer to go ... that's somehow helping them? It's the most twisted logic I've ever seen. Some/many programs are willing to accept "preliminary" commitments because they believe that's the best approach for them. Maybe they are right and maybe they are wrong, but it's not Brady Hoke's place to tell those other programs how to handle their recruiting. If Iowa and Nebraska are ok with their early commits continuing to go through the recruiting process, it's absolutely non of UM's business.

    Exactly look at Westphal this year. Pretty sure the coaches have told him to visit others before making his pledge

    That feeling probably results from confirmation bias but this is a particularly deficient article. How do you type an entire piece questioning the viability of a strategy that is resulting in top ten classes without fail?

    well i guess it is a good thing ufm is getting stud defensive line recruits and play makers in the offensive and defensive backfields.....is m going to start playing with 9 olinemen, a qb and rb? is m going to play defense with olinemen? safties/olinemen....we are 11-1 and ufm is 1-0 guess ill stick with our formula...... i remember hearing about dickrod recruiting small light ol guys think this is why m has taken so many over the last few years?

  • I can only speak for the UM parts, but wow, that was a terribly written and researched article. Did he even know anything about Dawson's recruitment? Dawson wanted to take visits, so he decommited. UM moved on to the point Wilcher was saying 'that ship has sailed.' Then Dawson calls up the staff after taking a visit and they apparently talk through stuff. The staff re-offers and then re-recruits him. Oh, and Dawson's dad died previous to the whole saga. Does that not count as a mitigating circumstance, as opposed to the Pharoah Brown thing where both sides just moved on? And Conley for that matter. Sure we continues to recruit him; but we also offered a bunch of new prospects while he was looking at OSU. And why is it the schools that are being hypocritical? Doesn't some of the responsibility of today's recruiting enviornment rest on recruits' aditudes? And the 'no-visit' policy at pretty much every school is actually a 'you shop around, we'll shop around' policy. Whether a certain school cuts all ties and re-recruits someone is based on situation. Oh, and Bama also has this policy. Has this hurt them? This whole article is just the next in a recent line of how far sports journalism has fallen. Let's just word vomit under a major news network's mast head without doing an ounce of actual research and call it 'journalism'. This is how you end up with an SI cover story about a dead girlfriend who doesn't actually exist.
