ESPN 150 rankings and scouting reports

  • I actually think ESPN gave us the most favorable rankings of all the major sites. The only exception really is that they have Shane significantly lower than everywhere else.

  • I'm actually happy. Evaluating prospects at the HS level is iffy anyway, even more so when you don't exactly know how they'll develop. So quibbling with rankings is a waste of time IMO. But you can get a rough gauge at the talent level, and if "experts" think we have 11 of the top 150 I can't find anything to be mad about that. Some OSU trolls might try to get under our skin by pointing out the their higher ranked kids, but I'll take 11 top 150 guys over 5 any day, regardless of where they're ranked.

  • IMO the list looks pretty good for Michigan. Main thing is getting on the list not necessarily what your exact number is. Looks like Michigan has a very good chance at 13 ESPN 150, and an outside shot at 15 with LaRue, Fuller, Mathis, and Cravens. Quite impressive!

  • Surprising to me is Conley and McCray being #2 and #3 in our class. I like it though, it shows that every site sees something in some of our players.

Re: Shane, think about it this way. If Shane took a deep breath and relaxed a little bit at Dallas instead of firing bullets all over the place, perhaps he jumps about 20 spots since that inconsistency in his accuracy seems to be the only thing they're nitpicking. Those rankings are great for bragging rights, but In some sense those Sparty trolls have a point. What matters in the end is the results on the field, although not having even one in the 150 hurts their case because it shouldn't be sustainable without talent.

Agreed, I am happy with 11 of the top 150 in the nation. Also, I like this point a guy made on tBB,

All rankings are just that, rankings

They don't mean much but imo ESPN means the most in terms of national perception

If you land the #1 class on ESPN everybody hears about that not just us recruiting nerds on the interwebs

Land the #1 class on 24/7 and not many are gonna know outside of us on this board

If I went to one of my boys and said FSU got that #1 class on 24/7 he would be like, wut ? "

Conley is the commit with the biggest disparity in his rankings. He's one of our lowest rated commits here and a 3*, a low 3* on Rivals (and ranked as an ATH instead of a CB), a 4* on Scout (22nd ranked CB overall), and then the #63 overall player in the country on ESPN (6th overall CB).

On 247 he's the 27th overall player in Ohio, on ESPN he's the 3rd (only 2 rating points behind Cam Burrows and 1 behind Jalin Marshall). It's tough to argue between being 5-10 or even 11-20, but 3 to 27 is like the two services are looking at completely different tape.

Perhaps one site has reviewed more tape? Or maybe there is just a huge difference of opinion on his talent level.

247 is supposed to be updating the Ohio ratings/rankings this week. We will see if tape came out on Conley that 247 hasn't seen yet.

  • Conley is probably too high on ESPN, but likely due a bump on the other services.

Conley our 2nd highest commit? I guess this is ESPN so should be expected.

Conley is a bigtime prospect he just was under radar early on. Many analysts have said he is the best cb in Ohio, considering burrows is there that's high recognition.

  • Great class, I would almost guarantee you will have the top class for ESPN if not top 3, who cares if they don't do the best job rating players its all about the national coverage you guys will get having the top class for them. Kids love ESPN. The national coverage is worth more then anything.

  • They didn't really go over Michigan all that much, just put us as the #1 class because we have the most top 150 commits, had a nice video of Sugar Shane, that's about it.

MGoVideo might post a video feature on it, if not I'll see if ESPN posts the video online.
