Dymonte Thomas

  • Wolv247, do you think that Dymonte will start as a true freshman? Or is it Marvin Robinson's job next year?

Either MRob or Furman I hope.

  • I think it'll be like the LG spot this year - the freshman (Kalis/Dymonte) will have all the opportunity to win the job, but the experienced guys (Furman/Mealer) will win out for the start of the season. By midway through the season, it'll be tough to keep the freshman off the field.

Also, won't it be RS SR Thomas Gordon and SO Jarrod Wilson next year?

Might be. Not sure. That seems like a good plan though. Real excited for Jarrod Wilson

  • Isn't Thomas expected to enroll early?

If he does, then I expect him to become the starter by mid-season if the older players aren't performing as well as they should.

Yes, he is, and I agree with your second part. Personally, I think it'll end up being a battle between Furman and Thomas for the starting spot.

T Gordan is the free safety, D Thomas will be competing with M Rob. Furman is yet to prove anything, sorry to say.

Gordon is the FS this year, but I think he could make the transition to SS fairly well if necessary.

Yeah, I really think Gordon could be a good SS to complement Wilson's FS. But we'll see. Robinson, Furman, Gant, and Thomas will certainly be in the discussion as well.

  • Should definitely move Gordon to strong safety next year and have Wilson in the back.

Right, because you've seen so much of him to make that argument... He's played a ton of football in college so at least you've given him a shot.

I did not downvote you, I just upvoted you to bring you back to 0.

Differing opinions are fine, that's the point of arguing on message boards! It's just a little better when you expand on reasoning and give support IMO.

I could be wrong, don't completely remember, but iirc he didn't do that well at camps. Tape doesn't blow me away, and he doesn't seem that athletic to me. But then again, Kovacs isn't an athlete either. I guess we just have to wait and see.

I don't recall him going to any camps, as he was injured for a majority of that time. Flew kind of under the radar due to his injury in the same vein as Kaleb Ringer, but he's a legacy who obviously knows the game well and is extremely passionate. Hopefully he grows into a good player, but who knows.

The good thing is that we have enough talent in the defensive secondary that it would just be a luxury if he pans out. goblue

  • It's a pretty fair question on dymonte. Imho he won't start at all next year unless injuries mount up. But he may still play a lot. Given his size, talent and intangibles it will be too tough to keep him off. But he will still be a frosh, and frosh make mistakes. So if you can get him experience without having to play a frosh full time then you play him in mop up games.

Rabid, I understand where you are coming from with your points. But I have to agree with ducks. This kid needs a chance. Kovacs walked in and no one gave him a shot even after starting and playing well the previous year.

  • Heard MRob has finally got it, much like Campbell this year... Expect to see a dose of him against run heavy teams because he is a bear in the run blitz... I think he grabs the spot for next year alongside Gordon.

    jnewberg24

  • Gotta see a lot from MRob this year to venture a guess at that. He got a decent bit of experience last year, but seemed very awkward when dropping back into coverage. He almost looks like he is not built to go any direction but forward, hard forward.

So I'd say he has the frame and athleticism to be an excellent run support safety, but he has still gotta show that he isn't a liability in coverage.

I can't really tell anything about Furman.

Thomas seems to be from a similar mold to Robinson: a big, athletic safety that is better in run support than coverage. I would bet that he has more swivel and range, however, due to his exploits as a running back and praise coming out of his camp performances.

  • If we are the talent level we need to be, Dymonte would redshirt.

I'd give it a year or two before we can really do that. I think 2014 will be the first year where we've built up enough depth that we can really redshirt the crap out of the freshmen.
