Drake Johnson

  • Had another huge game this week, going for 347 yards and 4 TDs yesterday. Puts him at 2700+ yards on the year and 37(?!?!) TDs.

I still cannot see why this kid's only offer is Eastern Michigan.

I think his only chance is a preferred walkon spot, which I would love.

  • I just read the entire MGoBlog thread on Johnson. I feel like deja vu.

Anyhow, I texted a PiHi grad and asked about Johnson He said he's is getting more attention from the coaches now. He also didn't know what his academic standing is.

Maybe the coaches don't want to turn off a guy they've been recruiting hard by making a late offer to another RB.

  • Me too. Lol, those numbers are crazy. I looked up his profiles on espn, scout and rivals and they all say Drake is around 6' 1" and 205 lbs and rate him at 2 stars. I didn't see a 40 time but he's obviously fast enough to outrun a lot of people. He even has a 3.0 gpa.

As someone else said, it would be great to have him come in as a "prefered" walk-on. Btw, can anyone tell me what the difference between a walk-on and a "prefered" walk-on is?

Preferred walk-on is guaranteed a spot on the team. Walk-ons have to try out.

  • Sam Webb on WTKA said he thinks Dunn will go to Michigan. If not, then Michigan would offer Johnson most likely. Which basically, he'll commit if Michigan offers him. All Michigan has to do is yell out the window across the street to pioneer "hey! Who wants to come play football at Michigan?" and theyre lining up.

Explains why the coaches maybe aren't going hard after other scholarship RBs besides Dunn. They can sell him on the "You're clearly our #1 guy and to prove it we aren't recruiting anyone else even though you're committed to OSU." They have two very likely fallback options in Juwan Lewis, who has visited for almost every home game I think, and Drake who is across the street. Neither are the caliber of Dunn, but both have big time numbers with Lewis getting like 285 yards and 3 TDs in their playoff win to go with Drake's 347 yards.

Also Webb said (paraphrasing) Michigan is also pursuing 4* RB Wes Brown out of Good Counsel in Olney,MD (teammates with Stefon Diggs). He thinks Michigan is most likely to end up with Dunn when it's all said and done.

However landing Brown might be beneficial to the case of getting Diggs. I think, if Michigan lands Dunn they'll be set at the RB for this class. If Dunn stays committed to where he is, Michigan goes hard after Brown. Drake Johnson will always be there if Brown goes somewhere else. Plus with the possiblity of landing Brown AND Diggs, I think it would be the birth of a pipeline with Good Counsel being Michigan would have 3 Good Counsel players in two years.

  • Maybe we'll get to the point where kids will come to Michigan as a walk-on rather than go to their second choice. Back in the day, Nebraska had 160 kids on the field, well over half were walk-ons. Probably won't happen, but a guy can dream.

We are actually seeing that to some degree, but a much smaller scale. We got Bo Dever as a WR, though he didn't appear to have any legit offers even though his film looks decent. Kenny Allen, a K/P from Fenton, reportedly had an offer from Oregon State and interest from some SEC schools, but opted for the Michigan walk-on offer. Allen is really, really good averaging close to 50 yards per punt or something crazy like that this year. Dan Gibbs from Seaholm has some MAC offers, maybe a low-tier B1G, but is weighing Michigan as a walk-on. Doubt anyone ever gets to the level you describe for Nebraska, but seems like we've got more kids than normal taking walk-on spots over other scholarships.

I think most of us here would rather have Brown than Dunn, but he seems more of a longshot. He might be a better RB, and having a pipeline to Good Counsell is worth it.

Straight up, I'd rather have Dunn because for our offense I like his power.

If Brown meant we would get Diggs AND a pipeline to Good Counsel though, that makes him much more attractive. Never guarantees about packages or pipelines though, so tough call.

I'm wondering if Blake Countess will have any influence on his former teammates decisions. If so, that'd help Michigan's chances I think. Dunn is the kind of power back that this offense needs IMO. He would be a monster steal if Sam Webb's prediction comes to fruition.

Blake is clearly an asset, though he definitely won't be the deciding factor for Diggs or Brown. But having a friendly face who likes Michigan, has shown true freshman can earn a starting spot, and is constantly getting national recognition on Saturdays is going to be a positive for sure. My guess is he's enough to get us a visit from Diggs, then it's up to the coaches and everything else to get us serious consideration.

    Limited scholarships.

It's not just that they don't want to undercut the progress they have made with Dunn, but we have a small number of scholarships remaining and cannot realistically fit Dunn and another RB in this class. The NCAA should be issuing its ruling on OSU's penalties very soon. Similarly, OSU needs to make a decision on Luke Fickell's status within the next month or so. The smart strategy, at this point, is to wait for the Dunn situation to play out. Based on his current offer list, Drake probably will be available all the way up to NSD.

Not to mention, flipping Dunn would mean taking him away from OSU. Strengthening yourself while weakening your rival is a two-for.

There is a reason Nebraska had so many walkons. I believe for instate students in Nebraska college is super cheap, virtually free. No such advantage here in MI.

Hey Dizzo, have you seen Brown's film? He's not exactly a finesse runner. He lowers the boom and keeps on trucking too. He just happens to have decent speed also. Just in case, I included a link.

I've personally felt like Brown is a faster version of Dunn. They're about the same size-wise, but IMO Brown is the better RB.

Obviously I'd love either one to come here, though.

Yea I pretty much feel the same way .. although if we strike out with Brown and have to 'settle' on Dunn I could live with that too. lol

I hadn't seen those highlights, but would definitely be ecstatic if we got either of them. What sold me on Dunn was one of his recent games where the coaches weren't going to play him originally because he was injured, but the team was losing against McKinley heading into the 4th quarter, so he told the coaches to put him in. He had 15 carries for 70 yards and a touchdown that quarter and they won 16-7. Just that mentality and the fact he seems to get better as the game goes on is something I really like. Not that Brown doesn't have that, but it probably factors in for me that the coaches are really pushing for Dunn so I figure that's the guy they really want too.
