Do you guys think the BIG should've put UM/OSU in same division?

  • I hate the fact that one of us could win "The Game" and then have to face each other again in the CCG...

To me it dilutes the rivalry.

It would be much better to me if we were playing each other to get into the CCG...Let's face it, more times than not, we will probably be facing each other again in the CCG....

Take 2006 game...That was one of the best "Games" in my lifetime, even if you would've won, it would still have been the best......if we had to meet again a couple weeks later, that game wouldn't have mattered.....

  • No.

I like the divisions as they are now. I don't care if it "dilutes" the importance of The Game. Times have changed. The Big Ten did what's best for the conference in the wake of SEC dominance.

Btw, when Miami joined the ACC, people believed that Miami and Florida State would meet almost every year for the ACC Championship. That has yet to happen even once.

The pre game hype could have never been matched in a second game a week later regardless of who won the first game. There have been rumors of moving the game to earlier in the season. If they do, I hope they move it to mid October and make it a night game every year. Night game every year would make the rivalry even better. The atmosphere of night games is so much more electric than day games. Fans can tailgate all day leading up the game.

Coach Hayes...Why did you go for two with such a big lead?..."Because we couldn't go for three"

    dkm36

  • I would not be opposed to moving the game to mid October if Michigan and Ohio start dominating the conference.

  • No, Having UM and OSU meet in the conference tittle game would be huge.

  • I like them in different divisions for the B1G sake more so than for the sake of Michigan and OSU. To me it does not behoove them to be in different divisions. I really do believe that UM and OSU will be playing back to back games soon. The best option for both teams in my opinion would be to more the game earlier in the season and have the rivalry week be for teams in their own division.

You're just upset you will frequently be booking two losses to us every year.

    MrWoodson

  • It's how it should be..... the two beat the crap out of each other for fun, then they play in the B10 championship game every year for the berth in the rose bowl. How can that be any sweeter!

Completely agree with you. I understand the other side of the argument, but this is too good of a rivalry to dilute it in any way, IMO. I thought the B1G really botched that when they formed the current system. And there are enough other quality programs in the conference that even if Michigan and OSU are in the same division, it's not like the winner of the other division will be awful

Yeah, I just think if we were playing and the winner, and only the winner, got to the CCG it would make the game just that much better....now, if we are both in the CCG, Our first game is basically just a chance for our players to get hurt because the only game that counts will be the next one....

I'm old, thus old school...I don't fear change, but i hate bad change....

Exactly. With the future playoff system, it's possible that Michigan and Ohio State could meet in the playoffs. But given how unlikely that is, and that it would be in the national semifinals or the national title game, I don't have a problem with that. That would actually take the rivalry to a whole new level. But when the B1G can easily make one minor tweak to ensure that they don't play in consecutive weeks, why not make it? I really don't see the harm to putting both schools in the same division.

  • I'd flip Wsconsin and Michigan....That gives us a big three of UM, OSU and PSU and they would have NE, MSU, WI.....better geographic fit as well....

Really hard to believe this wasn't thought about when the "brains" put these conferences together....I'm sure they thought "OSU v UM in CCG" but must not have cared about the best rivalry in CFB literally could be a meaningless game....

Those that like it this way, imagine in two weeks, DRob or Braxton go down with an injury and can't play the next week in the rematch.....what was the first game really for? NADA...bragging rights for a week?
Look at how we all enjoyed the rematch of Bama and LSU....and that was 2 months between games....LSU won the 1st one but does anyone care?

I agree with you all around here.

And there are so many different options that would keep both divisions relatively balanced. Ideally, it'd probably be preferable to have Michigan and Michigan State in the same division as well. So one division could have Michigan, Ohio State and Michigan State, while the other division would have Nebraska, Penn State and Wisconsin. In other words, you'd just be swapping Ohio State and Nebraska - no other changes required. It may not be an ideal fit geographically, but the B1G purposely refrained from giving geographic names to the divisions so they could maintain flexibility regarding the alignment. Even as currently constructed, there isn't any geographic rhyme or reason to the divisions.

Now, how do we get it done.....lol...

  • I think The Game should be moved to the very first game of the year. Even before the non-conference games. This would give the B1G a huge marquee game to open the season kind of like the SEC does. The other positive would be that the loser of The Game would be able to climb back up the rankings giving the B1G the best opportunity of getting 2 teams in the playoffs. Considering most years both schools would start out highly ranked, the winner would have a jump on getting to the playoffs thus giving the B1G the best opportunity at getting at least one team in the playoffs. In the event that both teams make the B1G title game it wouldn't be played in back to back weeks which might help the overall interest outside of the conference. Imagine having the entire offseason to promote and drool over a huge game to kickoff college football in our region. Just my opinion.

That would work if we'd join the SEC....because whoever loses would only drop from 5 to 8 or something....

I wouldn't like it to be the 1st game of the year for a couple reasons....It would be sloppy, and the students may not be in school at the time and that would cut down on the atmosphere and deprive the students from being involved in the rivalry....

If we can't be moved to same division (which to me is a no brainer), then I'd say move it to the 2nd game of the conference schedule...that way we both have 5 games under our belt, and have 6 more afterwards to move back up the rankings....

I too believe the two schools should be moved to the same division. I didn't consider the student part of it. That might be a good point. I do however agree that if the two aren't in the same division that The Game needs to be moved to an earlier date.

I think the Big Ten botched it up when they expanded and went to a CCG. I hate all this expansion crap. Never made any sense to me to determine a conference winner this way. Give me 10 teams and play each team. Boom conference champ.

    Even better....Old school, like me.....

But alas, we are in the age of the mighty dollar....the BIG had to sell the CCG rights so they can continue to pay top notch football officials.....

  • To be honest, I've never heard of a rivalry being diluted by playing it more often. Generally speaking, if you play more often there's more room for controversy, the coaches and players get to know/dislike each other more. Imagine you spend 3 and a half hours getting hit, getting scratched, getting gouged and one set of guys will leave the field as seething losers but you know you will do it all over again next week. Resentment builds up, it would carry over to the fans.

But simply viewed rationally (a) I don't think it will happen as often as people say. It's not gonna happen this year, I'd be surprised if it happened next year. People forget that one team in this rivalry more often than not is a 9-3 type team which may well not be enough to make it there. It will probably happen eventually maybe even a couple of times but the conference would love it because

    (b) nobody wants this to be the Big 12 title game. A game that was such a dud, out of the 15 games played hardly anybody outside the conference really remembers any of them. Personally, I can think of like three of them (2001, 2003, 2009) as semi-notable but even those weren't any more high-profile than any normal potentially BCS-busting conference match-up. Arguably, last weekend's Texas A&M vs Bama game may well remain more memorable than any of those. The Big 12 had the two teams most likely to have national championship ambitions in the same division and thus made it by decree impossible for that match-up, the only one likely to really get the focus of the nation, to happen. The Big Ten really doesn't want it to play out like that.

I think a division change is less likely than moving the Michigan-OSU game up to somewhere around the time ND hosts USC or the Red River Shootout and instead put the MSU game last in the year. As untraditional and possibly detrimental that would be for us, it would probably help the conference quite a bit.

  • I love the possibility of playing ohio twice a season that the current set up of the B1G championship game provides. I can just imagine a future graduating Michigan player leaving with an 8-0 record against ohio in football, that makes me so happy and with the B1Gs current set up its a possibility.

Well, I'd bet before we see either of our teams run 8-0 we'll see Unicorns delivering the pots o' gold from the end of the rainbow.....
