Did you want Rich-Rod to be fired?

  • In the immediate aftermath of the blowout loss to Mississippi State to conclude the 2010 season, what did you want Michigan to do with regards to Rich Rodriguez? On one hand, the program had steadily improved in terms of wins/losses since his first season. With that in mind AT THAT TIME, did you think Michigan should give him another year? Or were the defensive struggles and the blowout losses in the bowl game and to Ohio State enough to cause you to want him out?

In hindsight, it obviously looks like Michigan handled it very well, replacing him with Hoke. But just wanted to see what you all were thinking at that time.

  • I was at the Gator Bowl debacle, and I remember my dad and I walking back to our car after the game talking about RichRod in the past tense. The fact that he could have all the bowl practices to prepare for a middle-tiered SEC team and gave such a pathetic performance combined with the horrible seasons he had earlier spelled doom for me.

Keeping him would have meant accepting monotony and mediocrity. Yeah the offense would have been exciting, but I really think the defense would have struggled no matter who he had as DC. His offense is so quick-strike that the defense has to be out there for a long time no matter what. Takes a lot out of them and it's hard to get up for so many drives. Plus, he picked GERG.

We needed a change (see: the other thread you started lol)

I was really hoping they would give him another year only with the contingent of replacing the whole defensive staff. If he was not willing to part with them then he had to go also. Offensively I thought he was a great mind. And then they hired hoke and I thought ohhh great we hired an average joe coach and we ain't gonna be anything special. I was wrong sooooooo wrong. Hoke is the ideal coach for michigan, and I truly believe he will restore us to what we use to be.

  • Yeah, but I would have liked to see Denard run his offense for 2 more years. A lot of people are really down on Denard but when he is gone we are gonna look back in awe of his skills. There has never been a QB like him at Michigan and there may not be another in our life! I was upset with the way Rich was treated and the support he had, or didn't have.

  • I did not care about the Michigan man stuff etc. I was just furious that he did not seem to care about defense or special teams. He is somewhat trying in those areas at AZ but they still stink there but it is only year 1.

Todd, I was at the game and after watching UM get embarrassed by Miss. State all I wanted was change. It just did not work out with Rich Rodriguez. The word "Defense" did not exist in Ann Arbor during his time there. Since the late 1990's against the SEC, we had beat Bama, UF (twice), Arkansas, Auburn, lost pretty bad to UT.

That game was the nail in his coffin.

  • I wanted him to be fired after the loss to Penn State. That's when I made up my mind.

The 3 game losing streak at the end of the season, which culminated with the blowout loss to Mississippi State in the bowl game, just reinforced what I felt mid-season.

  • Yes

You can't allow a Michigan defense to be that atrocious. As the head coach, you're responsible for every aspect of the team/program.

MSU isn't a very good football program.. takes year of consistent winning to get to that level. - copemoney 1/22/13

  • He had to be fired. You cannot win in the Big Ten and play defensive as badly as Michigan did that year.

  • Made up my mind after Wisconsin. On the fence before but was never sold on the hire in the first place. My impression of wvu was never very good.

  • Wanted another year with a forced DC change. Loved watching the offense

Cant complain a lick though bc of Hoke, Mattison, etc hire

  • I didn't want him fired, I wanted Greg Robinson fired. I thought he had shown enough progress to keep his job, and thought our offense could be really special with him and Denard.

  • In hindsight, firing Coach Rod was the right move. At the time, however, I was on the fence and thought he should just be forced to change D-coordinators. I wish Rich Rod great success but am overjoyed by the direction Coach Hoke is taking this team.

  • Nope. Carr and his cronies did him dirty.

  • Should have been fired after the OSU game, he was a lame duck for that month before losing to Miss St.

    rich rod, is that you?

  • I wanted him gone. My dad wanted him gone after 2009. I know some fans who wanted him gone after 2008.

I was a RichRod supporter. I thought he was ahead of the game on the offensive side of the ball. I was tired of watching less talented teams with a spread QB beat Michigan and their plodding offense.

There was improvement in the offense in 2009 and 2010, but with each gain on offense, there was a visible loss on defense. It was pathetic.

  • I wanted Rich Rod fired the year before after that weepy sobbing presser subsequent to the Ohio loss. Just kidding. But a year later after his 3rd straight loss to Ohio (and 3rd to Sparty) I was pretty much done. I felt if he won the bowl game Brandon should give him another year. But by halftime of that game I realized he would not be our coach the next year. In hindsight, Michmania is right, he should've been fired after the Ohio game.

That being said, I feel bad for Rodriguez not having the full support of the University behind him. I was very dissappointed in some of the ugly revelations in John U. Bacon's book "Three and Out".

  • 1-12 against Wisconsin, Iowa, MSU, and OSU gets you fired. Should've realized it in year 1 when he force his defensive staff and scheme on a new DC and then pointed fingers at him for the mess they had.

    Dizzo

  • I felt bad for him because when he came in there wasn't much for him to work with. He made me mad though when he tried to run his offense without players for it. It would be like putting Robinson under center every play and trying to get him to be the next Navarre, that's just silly. Personally I think a nasty defense is more exciting then a RR offense. 3 and 1 and we stuff him, I freak out! RR was our coach so I supported him till the end but yes, I wanted a change. I was really happy with the Brady hire, I wanted to go back to the old Michigan.

  • Car did leave him with a lack of scholarship athletes. I think when Carr left the next year there was only 50 something players on scholarship for RR to take over, not good. Then he went and hired Greg Robinson, the man who pretty much ruined Syracuse football. His inability to cut ties with Greg Robinson an absolutely terrible defensive coach made me happy to see him go.

I absolutely hated the fact that he had a job minutes after the OSU game, talk about a lame duck. Richrod made his own bed, didn't lay in it very well. The whole "bare cupboard" thing is a crock IMO. If last year hadn't worked out so well, the same damn excuse would've been thrown at him. His stubbornness is what set this program back to the stone ages. I don't blame anything on Carr. RR was burning bridges from before he was even hired

I wanted him out, he did win a couple more games every season but our defense was non existent, had no fundamentals and couldn't even tackle properly which is unacceptable at UM imo. We were also dominated every year by msu and osu and then to get crushed like that by a mediocre sec team, enough was enough and it was time for a change.

  • I wanted him fired after 2008. His performance in the B1G was completely inexcusable, especially after the talent he was left with and the talent he brought in.

The talent he was left with wasn't that good. Also, he didn't have much time to bring in much talent for 2008.
