Devin Gardner at WR?

Denard doesn't play QB like Michigan QB's of the past... this is like comparing apples and oranges. What's better, a 4,000 yard passing season or a 2,500 yard passing season and 1,500 rushing yards?

Denard makes routine plays seem exciting, and exciting plays are routine... he keeps me on the edge of my couch everytime he's on the field, and that's all I can ask for.

Except no UM quarterback has come close to throwing for 4000 yards in a season...in fact, Navarre in 03 is the only time a UM QB has even thrown for 3000 yards. I think people are **seriously** overrating how good UM QBs have been and/or conflating their NFL success with college greatness

They totally are. Henne's most productive season was as a true freshmen and he had Braylon. He still only threw for 2500 yards.

  • I was using the numbers comparing passing stats, to passing/rushing stats. I wasn't being specific about different players, sorry for the confusion.

At the end of this season I could see Denard considered anywhere from 1-5 depending on who you ask.

Denard is one of the most dynamic players ever to play for Michigan, and I love the kid, but he is arguably not even Top 10 greatest QBs to play for Michigan.

Grbac, Henne Henson Brady Dreisbach Griese Navarre(Blech, I hate writing his name)

    are just a few

    Is this list serious?

I refuse to believe anyone actually thinks Scott Dreisbach was a better QB or had a greater Michigan legacy than Denard Robinson.

Not to mention Henne, who was useless when Hart was hurt, and relied on Hart to move the ball down the field.

    It cannot be serious.

    Dreisbach? Come on!

Or Henson, who was basically a slower lefty version of Denard and only started for a year.

Or Navarre, who is basically the definition of a mediocre game manager college QB

  • You guys have no idea what its like to having winning football. Can you name one deep throw Denard hit that wasn't an up for grabs jump ball? You honestly believe if he had a guy like Braylon here, he would have been better? Denard is a horrible passer. Take off your homer glasses and realize that with him at the QB helm, until the last 3 games of last year, we were completely UNCONFIDENT of any sure victories. His yardage came on opposing defense stacking the box to stop his runs. What were the YAC on those 4000. A guy like Dreisbach was a stud and a much better QB than Denard is. Can he run better? No. Denard is a great talent, but not at throwing.

I agree, Denard is a great RB...but a QB...he is about as bad as they come. There is a reason they are stuck to RichRod's offense. It is run run short pass...run short pass run...lol. I think a lot of the homers are probably the kids under 25 that really don't remember Dreisbach, Henson, Brady, Navarre ect...

Deep ball that want up for grabs? Sure the bomb to Matavious against Nebeaska.

My dad is 60 and says Denard is one of the best Michigan QBs we've had.

And I find it hilarious that you're criticizing RRs offense in this way. Do you forget the three yards and a cloud of dust that Bo had?

Driesbach was awful. Same as Navarre. like it or not, Denard will have better stats, better wins, and a better personality than a lot of QBs we've had.

  • Ur dads wrong...

Whatever, we can go back and forth. The winning football and legacy and all-time wins that you use in other arguments with other fanbases was built on Bo's 3 yard and a cloud of dust. After Denard leaves...we will NOT see his style of play at Michigan from a QB ever again. I say Good!

  • LoL..One of the best of all time? Maybe at RB. If Brady Hoke had come in and did what RichRod did his first year (forcing the team to go pro style), Devin would be at the helm and Denard would be playing slot or WR. Playing games of 500 are risky (ya know…chucking it straight in the air to Junior). Denard just happens to have a leprechaun in his back pocket.

Agreed! Can't wait to go to the pro-style offense. Denard can make this easy & win the B1G & roses. I liked when we were an offensive line & QB factory to the nfl.

    It was Gutierrez.

Rico is spot on here guys. Denard is a great athlete, but is severally lacking as a passer. What made Manningham, Avant, Breaston... so dangerous? Henne's arm did. If those guys got a step on someone, Henne hit them in stride. If a guy is open by 5 yards with Denard, it is overthrown or a jumpball to often. Are there a few exceptions, yes, but as a whole, Denard is lacking throwing downfield.

I love Denard, I hope he takes us to a National Championship, but I am not blind to his faults.

  • I must admit, I have a love/hate with Denard...but mostly love. He does make a lot of stupid decisions and I find myself yelling at him through the TV or at the Big House to run through the pasture, or throw to the TE or WR on an island (Not a Revis type of island), but how can you ignore his electricity and his biggrin? If nothing else, he's a great ambassador of Michigan football. I know that Hoke and Co. came in and made things happen with the players they inherited, but imagine Michigan's already RR-tainted persona without Denard? Tate had a little magic, but he couldn't keep up.

I'll never forget Griese to Tuman on the naked boot, but I'll also never forget Denard's 500 yd games, or his affinity with the student section and Maize Rage. He may not be a true QB, but that's where he plays at Michigan. He has done a lot of great things at that position, just not things that we were used to seeing (some we'd never seen before). He is special. Plain and simple. He is a top 5 QB at Michigan, hands down.

First, I'll chime in on the Denard discussion.

I think in a lot of ways this season will define his legacy when we look back on him. He'll probably be one of the most memorable players to ever wear the maize and blue but I'm not sure how fondly we'll look back on him if he doesn't drastically improve this year. Denard has put up gaudy numbers, made highlight reel plays, and won a lot of games. However, he's also come up short in some really big games. Pretty much every Michigan State game he's played in has been a train wreck. Hell, even the bowl game against Va Tech he certainly wasn't the reason we were in that game. Who was the last QB at Michigan that started 3 years and didn't win a big ten title or go to a rose bowl? Who was the last QB at Michigan to never beat Michigan State? It will be interesting to see how he looks this year.

As for Devin, I think this is just a nod to how much Borges likes him as a play maker. He wants to get the ball in his hands anyway possible. It's probably just special packages similar to the dual qb package we ran last season but it could be a full time position. Keep in mind, we're still months away from the first game. Let's see how it plays out before we jump to conclusions and start freaking out. By the time fall rolls around this whole thing could be scrapped. For what it's worth, could you blame Borges? The guy is 6'4", 210 pounds, and can run. That's a pretty enticing mixture.

Not to be defensive, but you saw the MSU game and Sugar Bowl, right? Our O-Line took those games off or you could say that we were owned by some really good defensive fronts. That wasn't Denard's fault. It's pretty difficult having to throw a pass in 2 seconds when your running game is non-existent. But somehow, we were still in those games late.

Yep your right and if Borges would try a damn bubble screen it would help, but he just hates getting an easy 8 yards a play.

Sure, Denard does have his faults. But all three of those guys you listed had NFL talent. Do you honestly think Denard is throwing to NFL talent? It goes both ways imo.

  • Ask Nebraska fans to list their best QBs of all time and I guarantee you Tommy Frazier is at the top of almost everyone of those lists. Ask Florida fans to list their best QBs of all time and Tebow will be in the top 5 for sure. My point being, in college football you don't need to be a great passing QB to be considered a great QB. An offense predicated on a running QB is a very viable offense at the college level. Denard Robinson is a great college QB.
