Devin Funchess' ceiling?

  • I have no idea what his ceiling is. I won't even attempt a player comparison.

But I hope that he will be as successful as Tony Gonzalez was (and still is) in the NFL. IIRC, the current Michigan TE coach was Tony's college position coach.

  • Going to be a beast is all I can say. Funchess is very impressive, and I would be surprised if he wasn't a fairly high pick in the NFL (top 3 rounds).

Thanks Frank, every time I find out more about this coaching staff I am just more amazed at how good they are and who they have coached.

  • Maybe this is dumb, but does noone think he could just play WR? When I see him running down the field i see Calvin Johnson. The way everyone has described him in this thread makes me think "bulking" him to block a few plays would be dumb when you could just put him outside and let him go deep.

    Oh, first post. Hello :-)

And I agree! Funchess looks like he could make a great WR as well, but I do think he has a higher ceiling at TE.

Welcome, nice to have you on. Make yourself at home. I think your right about Funchess because he is pretty much playing wide receiver right now. He does very little blocking right now because he is primarily used in the slot in passing downs.

welcome That's what I'm hoping for. Maybe ten pounds of muscle wont be that bad but that's about it. I think you take away what he has right now if you try to bulk him up. They should keep him as a wr/te combo like aaron hernandez. hernandez is doing just fine with the pats,

welcome goblue He does have the skills to be a WR, I think that would be likely if we weren't so thin at TE right now. The current coaches really want TE's in their offense and we don't have them after the Rich Rod era as his offense didn't really utilize them.

  • He seems more like a WR to me. I wouldn't refer to him as a TE. More of a hybrid.

  • I just think they're are more mismatches with him at TE...Safeties and LB's can't cover him

Great point. The whole idea is creating those mismatches.

Also, didn't Borges talk last week about how Funchess has improved a ton in his blocking? I thought he said that Funchess is at the point with his blocking that he is comfortable putting him in there for any package.

  • Sidenote: Can they throw Williams a bone and let him get at least one catch this year?

    Travis Beckum.

Spot on. I was thinking about Beckum and Fred Davis when I read the title of this. Pretty much big WRs that are asked to do some blocking to create mismatches.

The obvious difference is that Calvin Johnson is extremely fast. Corners have to worry about him beating them on a straight line deep or running routes to the inside. If you put a tall receiver who isn't fast enough to be a deep threat on the outside, you're allowing the corner to cheat because they can recover on the deep route and hedge their bets that they are running a short or inside routes. Jeremy Jackson is a good example of what I'm talking about. It's also the reason Roy has struggled for 2 seasons playing outside receiver, but he's 5 inches shorter than Funchess so that's another issue.

Funchess as a TE though is bigger and faster than the guys covering him, which is the mismatch you want to create with a TE.

I see Aaron Hernandez as his future.

They are completely different body types and players.

  • No....Williams has terrible speed, the only way u pass to him is if hes overlooked by the D....u cant target him and expect for him to get open
