Devin Funchess' ceiling?

  • BKP1883 made a nice post the other day about Jake Ryan's ceiling. I wanted to see what you guys thought about Devin Funchess' ceiling and what kind of player he can become. I am extremely impressed with Funchess and his abilities as a true freshman in the passing game. What kind of player can he become by the time he's a senior?

  • His ceiling could be among the greats but he has to put in the work in the weight room for blocking.

Known only a few games but he already has above average hands and speed for a TE and you can't teach a legit 6'5".

  • I think he will shatter the receiving records for TE's at Michigan. Will end up being a complete mismatch in the passing game. Has the chance to be a really high NFL draft pick.

  • Why he isn't on the field more and targeted more especially on passing downs is beyond me and drives me nuts. He will be Michigan's best receiving TE when all is said and done but for the time being and lack of receiver production, why he isn't playing more its silly.

Our passing game is seriously lacking at this point. He barely throw the ball at all. And he is a true freshman.

  • I think his role as a freshman will be limited because he has to put on weight and work on blocking. For now, he can't really be relied on in the running game or the pass protection game.

When/if he becomes an every down TE, he'll be a great NFL tight end. He has the hands, the height, and the speed. But it really limits our offense when defenses know that we're passing when he's on the field.

He has a long way to go, but he's a freshman. His ceiling is AA IMO if he makes strides in the blocking game.

All of this. Thanks for saving me the effort of typing it out Ducks.

I was somewhat reserved on Jake Ryan, but not with Funchess. The combination of length, coordination, and athleticism he has is exceptionally rare. He has the frame to play at 250 by the time he's a senior, and his wingspan makes him an enormous target.

He's a prototype in an offense that will feature tight ends. No discernible ceiling.

I know he needs to improve his blocking and that is why he doesn't play every down, but Williams only blocks. I don't get it. He has the physical skills to be a much bigger threat then our offense is using right now.

If Williams can't catch or get open, and Funchess is not the best blocker. I would rather have more plays with Funchess then Williams JMO.

Well ideally, they would both have redshirted as they are not complete TEs yet. Williams needed a year to get better with routes, better hands, and slim down a little. Funchess needed a year to bulk up and work on blocking. Neither of them were allowed that luxury because our TE situation besides them is a RS SR who never played before, a walk-on, and a converted LB who will probably never play.

  • Extremely high. Even when he's fully developed physically he'll be a bit wiry for a blocking tight end (maybe not during college but definitely in the NFL), but that doesn't change the fact that he's more athletically gifted than the vast majority of tight ends in college football. His catch radius is huge, not only because he's 6'4" but because he can jump and change directions. The difference between the average tight end an NFL tight end is fluidity, and Funchess has it.

His combination of 4.5 speed and ridiculous hands is enough to make him a future NFL pick already.

  • Just like awinks jaw! Jk

I love the kid. And a Michigan passing attack with a tight end screaming up the middle of the field is music to my ears....bennie joppru anyone?
Anyways, we haven't had a threat like him in a while. He possesses everything you want in pass catching tight end. But let's not say he needs to become this beefy ultimate blocking machine to throw off the defense and confuse them. We are speculating on the his ceiling but I only care right now about his college career, and a premium pass catching tight end with his size is always open I'm college. The competition just won't be there to slow him down when he fully acclimates to the game.

  • All I know is that we are blessed to have him.

With the unknown of who might emerge as our starting quarterback next year, having his talents for catching the ball should provide a nice safety blanket for whoever is at quarterback, whether it be DG or Bellomy.

Gallon, Funchess and Dileo will have the majority of our receptions in 2013.

  • A certain Internet blogger thinks Funch has a high ceiling, or is just trying to kiss his ass and make friends.......

@TremendousUM: @D_FUNCH A combo of Megatron, the good TO, Jerry Rice and Andre Johnson. Hopefully you remember that.

If Bellomy is at QB, I would hope that DG would have a large number of receptions as well.

  • If Funchess adds 10-25 pounds, gets better at blocking, and works his tail off, I could see him being every bit as good or better than Shannon Sharpe was. Sharpe redefined the position which Funchess could very well do also.

I believe that was a quote from Devin when asked who he tried to model his game after...or something along those lines.

  • The answer to this question is easy....he has no ceiling and if he puts on weight and strength; and becomes an every down player...then he'll be the best TE in the country by the time he leaves UM. Too much size, speed, hands, and leaping ability. He should get at least one target on jump balls in the redzone every game...no questions asked. I think of him like the TE Stanford had that was always hurt cause of concussions. I think he was like 6'8" tho, but same type of game. Will be our best offensive weapon in the passing game the next 3 years. Quite the safety blanket.
