Denzel Ward Highlight Tape

  • Give us the honest opinion Todd/Clint. I think he has pretty good knee bend for his height especially not really playing a lot of football before.

  • He has one year of football; reminds me of Michael Orr in the very first play.

  • I like that he plays to the whistle on almost all of the plays in the tape. He has developing to do but he has a lot of time to do it. Looks like he could add weight and still look pretty lean.

  • Looks like he stands straight up on a lot of plays, still seems pretty dominant. About what I expected from a guy with one year of football and great athleticism

  • Seems very LTT to me when he was a junior but maybe better. Like LTT, I bet with another year he will show a lot of process. I'm excited about him.

  • The nice thing is with our past two offensive line classes he can take a redshirt year and even play a couple years behind the other guys we have to really learn the position well. Excited about him. Coach Funk is gonna have a wealth of options teaching all these young men to be fantastic offensive linemen.

He's 6'9" blocking people a full foot shorter than he is. It's going to look like that.

If you saw the limited tape he had from last year, it's night and day. He's way ahead of where I thought he'd be.

  • I need to see him at some summer camps against better DL to see how good he is, and how far he has to go.

  • Think he was invited to the UA combine this winter.

After watching these highlights, I definitely think he came become a good player at the next level. Ward's looks like he has pretty good flexibility for a 6-9 kid and he has enough knee-bend to sit in his stance comfortably. He is pretty aggressive when run blocking and does a nice job extending his arms. He has a massive reach and I like his frame. Doesn't carry too much extra weight. I think he can certainly be molded into a player at the next level.

I think he could be ranked higher. Ward has a lot of potential and is very raw right now. There wasn't much film of him out there so this could help get him ranked higher. 247Sports will update the 2014 class several more times so theres always a chance he could move up.

I like his range (ability to cover ground in his pass set) and his footwork. Both of those give him the potential to become a top pass blocker.

He's understandably very raw at this point, and because of that, I'd expect vast improvement when we take a look at his senior film. Similar to what I said about Jake Butt, I think Ward possesses the physical ability to bend, but doesn't play with it at this point. Again, that takes a long time to do that on a consistent basis, so it's not a major worry at this point.

That being said, that'll likely determine what his ceiling ends up being. He's able to get by at the high school level by being so much bigger than everyone else, but that won't be the case in the B1G. With his height, it won't be easy to play low enough to become a quality run blocker, so it'll be imperative for his knee bend to be outstanding.

He also needs to get stronger in his lower body and become more explosive, another challenge for such a tall person.

I think we'll have a much better idea of his chances of seeing the field early in Ann Arbor when we see his senior film. Based on what he's told me, he's got access to the trainers and facilities necessary to really cover some ground in the offseason if he puts in the work.

As of now, he's most likely a developmental project type of guy with a high ceiling at Michigan, but it's possible that he'll show he's more game-ready by next fall.

It's tough to grade a guy like him since he's so raw, so his rating could really fluctuate between now and Signing Day. If he's got an amazing work ethic, I think he could be a lock to be a four-star in the mid-90's. But if he doesn't, then I'd probably keep him where he is right now. Based off of this film and assuming an average work ethic, I'd probably give him an 84 or 85. But like I said, that could skyrocket based on what he does this offseason.

Well how could he even be ranked without any film out there in the first place? And if a ranking is determined by auspicious game footage, then a higher ranking would be logical.

If we don't have a highlight tape, we can rank guys on game footage or if someone in our network watches him play.

  • Impressive... most impressive.

He has senior year, and with a redshirt year, he could have a very nice career at Michigan. Tons of potentials
